Principal's News
I hope your child/children had a restful holiday period and are ready for a busy term ahead. It is a strange feeling coming into Term 4 as it will be my final term before maternity leave. In 2024 I will be on maternity leave from Term 1 - Term 3, returning in Term 4. An Expression of Interest has been published across the Townsville Diocese for a relieving Principal and I look forward to sharing who this will be once it has been confirmed.
In 2024 St Joseph’s will also receive an allocation for an additional Senior Leadership Team member, which an advertisement will go live for soon. This is an initiative that the Townsville Catholic Education Office have implemented across all of their primary schools. An initiative we are very excited for. We look forward to welcoming a Deputy Principal of Teaching and Learning in 2024.
You would have noticed a lot of work occured at the school over the holiday period.
- Remploy removed all asbestos from the ‘old’ administration building and primary school. Demolition of the building will occur in Term 4 and is currently on track to being completed by the end of October.
- The tender has been published through i4 architecture for the upcoming building. This is due to close on Tuesday 10th of October. Should you want more information on this please contact i4 architecture on admin@i4architecture.com.au
- A new NBN connection has been installed to the school.
- A new alarm system has been installed throughout the school.
- All security cameras have been updated and new cameras installed to ensure full coverage of external areas of the school.
- Data has been installed in the demountables.
Please keep note of the following in Term 4.
Rock Pop:
Our Rock Pop students have been working incredibly hard for their performance which will take place next Friday the 13th of October in Mount Isa. Productions like this are a huge job for our students and an even bigger job for our teachers. I would like to thank Mrs Delaney-Lovett, Miss Brock, Miss Ansell and Miss Haley for their tireless work on the choreography, rehearsals, costume design, props, banner design and creation, and the administration that has been ongoing throughout the year. St Joseph’s are very thankful for your dedication to The Arts.
The Rock Pop Rehearsals will be in Mount Isa at Tony White Oval next Wednesday 11th of October. Students will be departing St Joseph's at approx. 10.30am and returning at approx. 3.30pm. Please ensure permission forms are returned asap.
The travel expense has been cheaper then originally communicated. It is $20 per student to travel to the rehearsal.
Half Day - Bank Holiday Reminder:
A friendly reminder that St Joseph’s will be concluding the school day on Friday the 13th of October at 12:00pm for the Special half day Cloncurry and District Race Club TAB Meet Bank Holiday.
Parking / Drop and Go:
We have received a number of concerns from families and nearby residents about the ‘unsafe methods’ parents are taking when dropping off or picking up students from the school. Please do not park on the corners, around the demountables or in front of the bunting. This area has been blocked off to ensure the safety of our community and utilising this area, even for a short period of time, compromises this. Please note that we have reached out to The Cloncurry Police for additional monitoring around this time.
Ham St currently remains as a drop and go zone. We are in the process of submitting an application to turn this into angle parking to relieve the pressure, however, this process takes time. Once we have a result from this we will be sure to let you know. In the meantime, we would appreciate your cooperation and patience.
Bike Racks
The bike racks were relocated to their new location at the end of Term 3, Week 10. They are now located between the MMS and the year 3 and year 4 classrooms. Students are to hop off their bikes/scooters at either the church and/or George Street and walk them to this destination. Students are reminded that they should not under any circumstances ride their scooter / bike through the school grounds.
Entrance
The main school entrance is now located on Ham Street. As this street is a drop and go zone (for now) parents/carers will need to park on George Street or Sheaffe Street if they would like to access the front office or school.
The old primary area and administration building is now a construction zone and is out of bounds. Under no circumstance can students, staff, parents/carers walk through this area to gain access to the school. Parents/Carers can however use this parking and enter the school via the grassed areas near the church.
Prep Entrance
RMC Carpentry have been busy working on the new prep entrance ready for the start of the term. The door that our prep students will be dropped off and collected from is on Ham St. As you enter the front gate you turn to your left, at the end you will see an area that has been set up for the prep students, as well as the entrance.
Wet weather plans
As our year 1, year 2, year 3 and year 4 classes are located in areas that will be impacted by wet weather the drop off zone for wet weather days will be in the Mary MacKillop Shed. You will notice either cones or spray painted numbers on the ground which clearly mark the area your child/children should line up and wait for their teacher to collect them at 8.20am when the school bell goes. Students are to keep their bags / lunch boxes with them on these days and avoid entering their classrooms. If there is no wet weather students are to line up in the area that was allocated in Term 3 by their classroom teachers.
The school has invested in umbrellas for the students to use if they need to walk through the school on these days.
Swimming
In Term 4 students at St Joseph’s are engaged in Swimming Lessons in replace of their PE lessons. This term we are excited to offer more than swim safety and familiarisation. Nerissa O'Brien from The Cloncurry Swimming Pool will be running the sessions which will include School Water Safety, Swimming, Survival and Stroke Development. The lessons will begin in Week 2 on Tuesday 10th of October and run for 6 weeks. Permission forms have been sent home. Please ensure these are completed and returned to school as soon as possible.

Chaplaincy Breakfast
Chaplaincy Breakfast will go ahead in Term 4. This will be on a Tuesday and Thursday from 7.45am (as normal), commencing Thursday, Week 1.
On all other days (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) students are not to be on school grounds before 8.10am, which is when supervision begins. If your child walks, rides their bike or scooter to school please talk to them about the appropriate time to leave home in the morning to get to school at or after 8.10am.
We often organise for work to be completed at school prior to the students arrival or alternatively after school and it is important that we know children are safe whilst onsite.
Eating Location and Morning Tea / Lunch Times:
Due to the eating area being a part of the construction zone students in prep to year 4 will now eat with their classes (in front of their classrooms), supervised by their classroom teacher. Students in years 5 to year 9 will have no change to their eating location, as they will continue to eat in the upper middle years area.
Students will have 10 minutes of eating time at the beginning of each break (as normal). If students have finished eating in this time they will place their lunch boxes back in the classroom fridges and begin playing. If student’s haven’t finished they will relocate to the tables near the basketball court. However, students will not be able to re-enter the classrooms after this time to put their lunch boxes away. It is important that students are supervised at all times to ensure their safety. We cannot monitor this if students are going in and out of the classrooms throughout break times. If your child isn’t finishing their food in the designated time their classroom teacher will place a notification in the child’s lunch box to request that an ice brick is packed in their lunch box.
In the event of wet weather students in prep, year 1 and year 2 will eat inside their classrooms. Students in year 3 and year 4 will eat either inside their classrooms or under the Mary MacKillop Shed.

APRE News
Welcome back to Term Four. I hope the break gave our school community a valuable opportunity to rest and recharge in order to prepare for the busyness of Term Four. I look forward to catching up with our students this week to hear what they got up to during their break.
Sacramental Program - First Reconciliation
An email went out to parents and candidates on Monday with information in regards to the 2023 Sacramental Candidate completing their First Reconciliation. Parents are encouraged to read and respond to this email. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me.
October - Month of the Rosary
This month the classes will focus their prayer times around the Rosary. October is designated by the Catholic Church as the "Month of the Rosary" because in this month the Church celebrates the Marian advocation of "Our Lady of the Rosary" on October 7.
To understand this feast, we need to go back in time. In the 16th century, the Islamic Ottoman Empire presented a serious military threat to western Europe and sent a fleet of ships to attack Christian defenses in southern Europe. Pope Pius V recognized the grave danger and organized a fleet called the Holy League to confront the navy of the Ottoman Turks.
On October 7, 1571, the two navies engaged in a pivotal battle that would determine who controlled maritime traffic in the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Aegean seas. The fate of western Europe depended upon the success of Christians in this navy battle, which involved more than 400 warships (it was the largest naval battle in Western history for centuries).
Pius V knew he needed more than just military strength to defend Christian Europe, so he asked that all the faithful pray the rosary, requesting the intercession of the Blessed Mother. At the end of the Battle of Lepanto, the Holy League was victorious and the maritime expansion of the Ottoman Empire was permanently prevented. (www.dotb.ca)
Still today the Rosary is such a powerful prayer that lets us develop and strengthen our relationship with God. By praying the Rosary, we meditate on the events in the life of Jesus Christ and this lets us know God more.
Wishing everyone a refreshed start to the new term!
Mrs Therese Curley

Welcome back to Term 4!
A warm welcome to you all for our last term of the year, and we especially welcome our new students & their families and staff to our St. Joseph’s community! Make sure to introduce yourselves to Mr Timms and Ms Ellis as they settle into life in Cloncurry. I hope you all enjoyed the September school break and took some time recharging the batteries in preparation for what will no doubt be a busy term for us all.
With the World Mental Health Day being on the 10th, October is Mental Health Month. Parents and carers can play a crucial role in their children's mental health. As a result, staying informed on the current state of youth mental health is vital, as it not only affects individuals, but also families and communities. According to recent research, the frequency of mental health disorders among young people is increasing, with anxiety, depression, and self-harm being among the most common challenges.
One of the reasons being attributed to this rise is the heightened stress and anxiety that many young people face in today's society. Academic success, social media, and family issues are all influencing factors. Many young people are still suffering the long-term consequences of the pandemic, such as social isolation, uncertainty, and loss.
Parents can play an important role in their children's mental health. Creating a safe and open environment for your children to talk about their emotions, thoughts, and feelings is vital. Encouraging healthy habits like regular exercise, a balanced diet, and proper sleep can help reduce their stress levels and boost your child's overall mental health. There are also many resources and services available to children, adolescents, and their families, such as school counsellors, various mental health organisations, support lines, and of course, mental health professionals. It is important to remember that seeking help is a show of strength, not weakness, and that early intervention is critical in addressing young people's mental health difficulties.
This edition of SchoolTV, discusses some of the major mental health issues affecting young people and how to support a child experiencing them. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact myself or our Guidance Counsellor, Bec Greaves, for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Year 4
Hi all,
Welcome back to Term 4. Wow, this year has gone fast!
Timetable Change: Our Library time has changed this term. We will now be having our Library visit on Tuesdays. This means that students have already visited the Library this week. Our PE lessons have also changed to Wednesday P3 (11:20-12:20). Please make sure you have received the permission slip sent home with your child and you return this ASAP. Swimming togs will be required every Wednesday from Week 2 onwards.
Writing: Our sentence focus this week is The Adverb Start. The Adverb Start Sentence is a sentence that starts with an adverb. Adverbs are (nearly) all the words beginning with -ly in English. Words like: cleverly, usefully, firstly, brilliantly, sneakily, importantly, cheerfully, silently, curiously, and finally.
Check these out:
- Sadly, the pirate captain Greenbeard Hawkins never learned to swim.
- Carefully, Sophie snuck the spider into her brother’s cornflakes.
- Fortunately, Henry’s grandmother was quite good at ducking flying apples.
Spelling: Our sound for this week is ‘y’ as in yo-yo. This sound can be represented by the following graphemes (letter combinations): y and u..
- The y (yo-yo) sound is used at the start and in the middle of words, but never at the end of words (e.g. yellow, canyon).
- The y (yo-yo) sound is frequently used with another sound as part of a sequence of phonemes: ‘y’ for yoyo then the ‘ew’ in boot. These two phonemes are often represented by the graphemes ew, u_e and u (e.g. knew, cube, music).
Reminders:
- Tuckshop - Please make sure Tuckshop orders are placed by Wednesday morning.
- Library - As noted above, our Library visit is now on Tuesdays. Students have already visited the Library this week and everyone has at least two books.
- PE - Students have PE on Wednesday.
Have a great week,
Miss Mairin Borlase
Year 5
Dear Families,
The final term of 2023 is here! Time flies when you're having fun. From early conversations, learners had a fun break from the school routine and we're now back into full speed to camp and then the end of year (it will come and go quickly!) Please check out our RUOK? video from last term's assembly posted on the Year 5 website.
SWIMMING: Swimming notices were distributed on Tuesday and are due back to class teachers on Monday 9th October so that we can commence our swimming lessons on Wednesday 11th October (and then weekly lessons). Please arrive at school promptly for our 8:20 roll so that we can head straight to the pool. Wear bathers/togs (or whatever you want to call them) under school uniform so that it can be a quick change at the side of the pool. Remember towel, goggles and underwear - school shoes must be worn on walks to and from the pool.
DAM EXCURSION: Friday's Excursion to the Chinaman Creek Dam - Students must wear their sports uniform, school hat, comfortable cycling/walking shoes and have their own sunscreen/insect repellent in a small bag with their fruit, snacks and water bottle. We ask for zero food waste packaging on all food items - to reduce our impact on the environment. A Sausage Sizzle lunch will be provided at 1:00pm, we’d love for you to join us!
CAMP INFORMATION MEETING: On Wednesday 11th October, we will host a Paluma Information Meeting in the Year 5 classroom from 4:15pm-5:15pm. The main purpose is to share the information from the Y5 website and to be available to discuss any questions and queries families may have. We will also have Medical/Consent forms to be completed (Please see the Y5 website for the information you will need).
ENGLISH: This term, we will focus again on persuasive writing and our Daily Challenges with a focus on writing for a sustained period of time will continue this week. In spelling, we will focus on the letters (graphemes) used to make the sounds (phonemes) [oo, u-e, u, ough] and also investigate word origins and continue to investigate homophones (words which sound the same but have different spellings and meanings).
In our reading comprehension, our focus will be on word meaning in context and facts/opinions used within texts we read. There are a range of excellent texts which will be used throughout the term - mostly focussed on the connection to Biology and plants/animals adaptations. We will discuss the roles within a Socratic Debate - Director, Question Maker, Word Detective, Clarifiers, Creators and Connectors. The purpose of this 'reading circle' is to discuss texts that we read, contribute to debate about vocabulary meaning and how we can connect reading with our own life.
MATHEMATICS: In our work this week we will finalise our Shape/Angles assessment while our Think Mentals involves revision of the four operations of multiplication, division, subtraction and addition. We will start our Chance and Data work this week - focussing on events and outcomes - coin toss, dice roll and spinners to discuss how likely or possible different outcomes are.
When we toss a coin, we have 2 possible outcomes - heads or tails but a regular six sided dice gives us 6 possible outcomes. This is a fun and engaging learning sequence to gear the learners back into fractions, decimals and percentages!
If you'd like to join us at the Dam on Friday for a sausage sizzle, we would love to see you there. Wishing you a great week,
Mr Mike Tarleton
Year 6
Hello Year 6 Families.
Welcome to Term 4!
9 weeks to go for our soon to be Year 7 high school students! The year has flown by.
This week in Year 6, we have begun looking at the importance of timetabling in math–how to read timetables and understand and analyse the time it takes to get from one point to another. This is a skill our students will use regularly, especially when travelling.
In English- We have started to look at Informative and Literary texts- and how their language features can be used in different ways to have a similar effect in delivering a message.
The Year 6’s are very excited for their final Term in the Primary school and are looking forward to swimming kicking off in PE next week!
Happy week 1 everyone!
Mr Dom Purcell
Subject Spotlight
Mr. Delaney - Year 7 Maths:
This is the LAST few concepts of the LAST topic for the year - the students’ first year of high school maths. Complete!
We are finishing the year with Geometry. In particular, we are solving problems involving interior angles inside of all sorts of triangles and quadrilaterals. They will also name the types of angles formed by a transversal crossing parallel line and learn to solve problems involving them.
To finish the year, the students will revise and extend their knowledge on area and volume - particularly for irregular & compound shapes. We will describe the properties and viewpoints of an array of different shapes! Below are some shape cheat sheets…
Sunshine Club Performance - Thursday - 10am
On Tuesday evening Sunshine Club performed a musical at The Cloncurry Shire Hall for our Cloncurry Community. The wonderful performers have offered to come along to St Joseph's tomorrow (Thursday - 5th October) to share some of the songs and dances that they did for this event.
Classes will join the performance (if they are available) in the Mary MacKillop Shed at 10am.
Parents and Carers are welcome to join.
Student Wellbeing
Over the last decade, mindfulness has been slowly rising in popularity with many individuals practising it on a regular basis. Evidence-based research has found that there are many benefits to mindfulness which has prompted schools across the nation to implement this practice into their daily routines.
Mindfulness can be described as attention training for your brain, enabling you to focus on something without judgement and to stimulate curiosity. Mindfulness can be practised in a number of ways and is something that can be done by everyone - no matter what your age! It has been practised by many cultures around the world, but it is not exclusively affiliated to any particular philosophy or religion.
Mindfulness helps improve memory, engagement and performance. Its positive effect on the brain can improve immunity, mental wellbeing, learning ability, emotional health and even, time management. It is especially important in this era of information overload as our attention is constantly being pulled in many directions making us more distracted.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents can learn the best way to introduce this mindfulness to their children, implementing it into their daily lives to have an overall positive impact on family relationships.

No Smoking Law
FOR ACTION - New Smoke-Free Law 01.09.2023
From 01 September 2023, new Smoke-Free laws apply. Smoking is already prohibited at public and private school facilities and in a 5-metre buffer zone extending from the boundary of the school. These new laws extend the smoke-free protection to include all carparks provided for school communities. This includes carparks located on council land that are intended for school community use.
Smoke-free requirements for schools apply at all times which means school carparks are also smoke-free areas outside of school hours, on weekends and in school holidays. These laws apply to everyone using the school carparks (students, staff, parents, volunteers, visitors, contractors and clubs accessing school facilities).
Smoking products can include tobacco products, personal vaporisers (e-cigarettes/cigars, vape pens), e-liquids & e-cigarette parts etc.
