Principal's News
Welcome to Week 9,
I can’t believe how quickly this term has gone. It has been incredibly busy and I know a lot of our staff and students are looking forward to the upcoming break. I have loved hearing the stories of what our families are planning on doing.
Cloncurry Show - Thank you
This weekend our wonderful community will be volunteering on the gate at The Cloncurry Show. This is a great fundraiser for our school and we are very lucky to have such dedicated people helping us strive for excellence. We appreciate you. I always enjoy my shift on the gate. It is a fantastic time to speak to our community as they arrived or departed the show.
Semester One Reporting
The term is flying by and our teachers are busy preparing reports on each of our students' progress in Semester One. Assessment and reporting is a vital part of education as it provides a time for both students and teachers to reflect on the work that has been completed, while critically thinking and planning for what needs to occur moving forward. Report cards will be published to the Compass Parent Portal next Friday the 23rd of June.
While reporting is often formal, we do encourage parents and caregivers to make regular informal contact with classroom teachers to discuss your child’s wellbeing, progress and goals. At St Joseph’s we are consistently striving to maintain and sustain regular dialogue between our teachers, students and parents to best meet the needs of our students.
It’s the time of term again for me to remind families to check Compass logins. Semester 1 Report Cards will be uploaded on the last day of the term. If you are having issues logging into Compass, please contact the office as soon as possible so they can assist.
Food and Drink Items not Permitted
A reminder that students are not permitted to consume soft drinks, energy drinks, frozen or hot drinks at School. If a student is found with one of these, they will be asked to put it in the bin. If you need to bring your child lunch during the day, please take it to the Front Office, and our admin staff will notify the student. Students should not be waiting at the front of the School or at the side gates for lunches to be delivered.
School Officer Appreciation Day
This Wednesday it is School Officer Appreciation Day. As a school we will be celebrating all staff at St Joseph’s Catholic School on Friday the 11th of August. In previous years we have celebrated World School Officer, Administration or Teachers Day separately, however, last year we came together in unity to celebrate the impact that we make each and every day, which is what we will continue to do moving forward.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous work of our school officer team. To Miss Jamie-Lea, Miss Rachel, Miss Brie, Miss Mia, Miss Amanda, Miss Sonnie, Miss Tamara, Miss Vanessa, Miss Maggie and Miss Kylie – we thank you!
Please join me this week in reaching out to our wonderful team to thank them and to share the impact they have had on your child’s life.
NAIDOC Week - Week 10
In Week 10 (next week) St Joseph's Catholic School will be celebrating NAIDOC. There will be activities running throughout the week, including a whole school Didirri on Wednesday afternoon at 1.50pm and a NAIDOC Week Liturgy on Friday morning at 8.30am. We would love for you to join us to celebrate this occassion.
Dress like your Teacher Day - Next Friday
Students are encouraged to 'Dress like their Teacher' next Friday 23rd June. This would have to be my favourite dress up day throughout the year. Each year I am shocked at the level of details our students go to, to dress like their teacher.
May God bless you and your families for the week ahead,
Mrs Samantha Kelley
Principal
APRE News
Welcome to week 9! Thank you to the families who joined us for our Children’s Mass on Sunday. I would like to make a special mention to the students who attended and participated in the mass - it is always so lovely to have them involved.
Excitement is in the air as “The Cloncurry Show” dominates the topic of conversion. I really enjoy viewing all the students work on display in the pavilion. A huge shout out to all our wonderful staff who have made the effort to ensure our students can proudly display their amazing work!
This Wednesday we will celebrate School Officers’ Day. This day provides us with a special opportunity to say thank you to our staff who assist children with their learning and are sometimes ‘unsung heroes’. Our School Officers are wonderful people who contribute to the successes our children achieve daily. To all our School Officers, thank you! Please encourage your child/children to show their gratitude to our School Officers on Wednesday.

- Catholic Identity Committee meeting: Monday 5pm in the Library.

Best wishes to those students who are competing or have submitted entries into the Cloncurry & District Show. It is a fabulous time to come together as a community and enjoy the fantastic exhibits, have a browse at the wares on offer, grab a show snack and enjoy all the entertainment on offer. Hope to see you there!
Cattlemen’s Dinner
For those students who have volunteered to assist as wait staff for the Cattlemen’s Dinner on Friday night - you will need to be at the Precinct at 6pm in black/white shirt, black long pants and black school shoes. Students can be collected at 10pm, if earlier, I will contact parents. Clean up the next morning will start at the Precinct at 8.30am and will be completed by 9.30am.
Suicide and Self-Harm
Over the past two weeks, Mrs Kelley, Mrs Curley and myself have received further training in responding to self-harm in the school settings and suicide prevention. Young people today face a multitude of stresses in many areas of their life. Some of these stresses are the result of negative experiences. Unfortunately, as a coping mechanism, some young people resort to self-harm. The reason for this behaviour will vary for each individual, but generally, those that self-harm do not necessarily wish to commit suicide.
Tragically, suicide is the biggest killer of Australian youth and the statistics are alarming. Studies have shown that nearly 1 in 5, Year 12 students, have considered suicide or self-harm, because of exam and homework pressures. Self-harm in girls has increased by 20% over the last decade, and suicide calls to Kids Helpline have increased by 22%.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn to understand and recognise the warning signs in order to prevent the unthinkable from happening. The focus for parents should always be on identifying the underlying difficulty the child may be facing and be proactive in finding the best preventative measure.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact Mrs Schneekloth, Pastoral Care Leader, Miss Bec, Guidance Counsellor or Miss Pete, School Chaplain, for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Prep
Welcome to Week 9!
Thank you to everyone who has brought Potatoes in for the Preps to make Potato People. It would be wonderful if you could enter some of these in the Vegetable Creations Section G7 at the Show. These need to be taken to the Pavillion (PCYC Hall where netball etc is played) between 10am and 5pm and will cost $1.50 to enter. It would be wonderful to see some of our Potato People there! Here is the link for tags to put on the plate the potatoes are on and for the entry form Cloncurry Show Sections.
Don't forget to take a look at the Prep painting, drawing and handwriting in the pavilion.
The RFDS Plane simulator was not able to get to school last week. Hopefully it will be here this week. Over the last two weeks of the Term we will continue to work through Initial Lit lessons, revise, extend and consolidate number to 20 and beyond and learn about people who keep us safe and healthy as part of our Health Unit. The class will also be practicing for leading our NAIDOC liturgy at assembly on Friday in Week 10. Readers and Homework will not be given out this week as we will be concentrating on getting our Home Reader Books scanned back in before the term ends. Please look for any books you may have at home and return these.
Reminders:
- Tuesday - Sport
- Thursday - Library, tuckshop, bring reading folders back and take Potato People to the show pavilion if you wish to enter these.
- Friday - no school
Yours in fun and learning,
Mrs Sharon McLauchlan, Miss Tamara Williams and Miss Brie Thew
Year 1
Hello everyone,
Welcome to week 9! What a crazy term, we are nearly there!
This week in Year 1 we are taking some time to look at the importance of NAIDOC week. The students have been exploring the First Nations Culture through the story books ‘Finding Our Heart’ and ‘Tiddlick the Frog’. They are using their new knowledge of why writers write to think about why Authors wrote these particular stories.
When reading any text at home with your child make sure to have a discussion about who this text is written for and why do you think that?
Reminders
- Library: Monday (week 1,3,5,7,9)
- Resilience Project: Monday (week 2,4,6,8,10)
- Sport: Wednesday (every week) please have your child wear sports uniform
- Technology: Thursday (every week)
If you get the chance, pop down to the show and have a look at the students' entries. The students have been working hard on them this term. The students entered a writing piece and also an art work. Their hard work shows in their amazing work.
Have a wonderful week,
Miss Mae-Louise Brock, Miss Erin Haley and the always fun Year 1’s!
Year 2

Year 4
Hi all,
Wow this term has flown by! A reminder that we don't have school this Friday because of the Cloncurry Show. However, the children do have homework.
Homework: I have told the students that their habitat boxes will be due at the end of the first week back in Term 3. This is because I was supposed to be heading to NZ for the school holidays and I want to give the students a little more time to prepare these.
Spelling: We are currently learning a new spelling rule each week and I have decided to cut down on the number of words so that the students focus on the rule. Our sound this week is ‘n’ for ‘net’.
- This sound is most frequently represented by the letter(s) (grapheme) n (e.g. neck, front, tin).
- The grapheme nn for the sound is usually seen in the middle of words, after short vowel sounds (e.g. tunnel, banner).
- The grapheme gn is an unusual way to represent the sound (e.g. gnome, sign).
- The grapheme kn for the sound is usually used at the start of words (e.g. knit, knife, knuckle). Words containing kn for net usually originate from Old English.
Reminders:
- Tuckshop - Please make sure Tuckshop orders are placed by Wednesday morning.
- Library - Students will be visiting this Library this Thursday.
- PE - We have PE this Thursday. Please make sure your child is wearing their PE uniform.
- Assembly - There is no assembly this week.
- Homework - Our Habitat Website is available at this link.
Have a great week,
Miss Mairin Borlase
Year 5
Dear Families,
I would like to congratulate your children again for their full participation and sensible, mature behaviour during our Life Education workshops last week. In a potentially embarrassing discussion about relationships and identity your children were extremely respectful and composed - asking many inquisitive questions and learning about the many changes that take place during puberty. Dr Anne delivered excellent sessions that helped learners to develop their understanding of their own and others' bodies and we were very grateful for her visit.
It has been a busy couple of weeks as we prepared art and finalised our narrative writing. (We even finally finished our mosaic art!!!) We hope you make time to see our art and writing on display at the Cloncurry Show this weekend!
ENGLISH: This week’s spelling focusses on the long vowel sounds for [n] (n, nn, and kn), the prefix/suffix of en- (meaning put or make) and also (n, ng) sounds. We will finalise our informative texts which have been created into websites with a glossary, images, videos, quizzes and text created from our research.
MATHS: In our mathematics lessons, we discuss division strategies - using number splitting to solve. We revisit our understanding of multiples and make connections with known multiplication facts. Learners discuss how they can split the numbers to make the division easier to calculate. See the example below (on our Y5 News page). Asking the question - how many 4's are there in 85? The number can be split in multiple ways but the example shows 40+40+4+1 to make 85. This allows us to divide each number by 4.
Have an amazing week,
Mr Mike Tarleton
Year 6
Now that The Year 6’s have finished their assessment for the Semester, It was time this week to put some of their new found knowledge to good use.
In HASS, students have formed small groups and have been looking at a mini business they could create at school. They have been talking about what Goods or Services they could sell, how much money it would take to get it started, and the prices of their goods or services. We have even discussed different organisations or ways we could spend or donate the money made to different services in the community.
In Maths, students have been revising the different concepts we have learned this term and have spent time on Studdyladder, an online platform that allows them to revise their Math and English skills.
Everyone is super excited for the Cloncurry Show, with a number of Year 6 students submitting Art Pieces to be displayed!
We are nearly half way through Year 6!
Have a great week 9!

Recap P – 6 Tech with Mrs Laffey
In Primary Technologies this term all of our students have been looking at the internet and how to be safe when using it. We have also been learning how to use different programs and devices, which has been quite a bit of fun.
Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 practised sorting out what information is safe to share, and what details (like their home address) should not be shared with the entire online world. For our younger students, we explain that posting things publicly on the internet is like making a poster and putting it up at the post office for everyone to see. It was very impressive how quickly students were able to learn to sort and then identify safe and unsafe information for sharing. We then started using different applications to make posters about ourselves that could be considered safe.
Year 3 and 4 spent some time looking at what kind of details they should and shouldn’t share online, and how to respond to a digital situation which might not be safe. Students learnt that a responsible adult should always be told if something occurs online that makes them feel uncomfortable, or if they are being asked to share information that isn’t 100% safe. They also practised engaging in online discussions in a safe and appropriate manner; no CAPSLOCK yelling, and recognising that text doesn’t convey emotions properly (even with emoticons). Our little tech geniuses then got to make a website with some of their friends to share images and pictures of one of their interests.
Year 5 and 6 used their data understanding from last term to decide whether they use the internet the same as other members of our years 5-9 students. Students were required to build a website that included the data, and descriptions of themselves and how they match, or are different, to that data. They were also tasked with sharing links to websites they use at school and home. It was really interesting to see how individualised some of their pages became.
