Principal's News
Welcome to Week 7,
It’s hard to believe we are already here. This term is going by so quickly and before we know it, we will be celebrating the end of Semester 1. What an amazing turnout at our assembly last Friday for the Reconciliation Week Liturgy and Sporting Awards - a big thank you to our family members that joined us. It is so nice to see your child’s smiling face when they spot you in the crowd.
This week we will be acknowledging Reconciliation Week at St Joseph’s. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The National Reconciliation Week 2023 theme, “Be a Voice for Generations” encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise. For the work of generations past, and the benefit of generations future, act today for a more just, equitable and reconciled country for all. Our students started discussing this in classes last week and will continue throughout this week.
Each term both myself and Mrs Therese Curley, our Assistant Principal for Religious Education travel to Townsville for Professional Development. Last week Mrs Curley joined with other Assistant Principal’s from across the Diocese and this week I will join with other Principals. I will be travelling today (Tuesday) and attending the course from Wednesday to Friday. If you have any concerns, please contact Mrs Curley or alternatively email myself on skelley2@sjctsv.catholic.edu.au and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
BGA - New Build
As many of you are aware, we are excited to be knocking down and re-building our administration building and primary classrooms. We are on track for this to begin in the September holidays. This will mean that classrooms and the office will start to move into demountables throughout Term 3, ready for the school to be wrapped and demolition to begin.
The reason this will start in the school holidays is to ensure all asbestos has been removed from the school before the beginning of Term 4. There will be radars set up throughout the demolition in term 4 to monitor the dust and air quality to ensure it is safe for students at all times.
I am however calling for help. We need approximately 2-3 shipping containers to store our classroom resources and furniture in whilst we build. If you know of a company that might be able to help us out with this, that would be amazing and so very much appreciated. Please email me directly on skelley2@sjctsv.catholic.edu.au.
Did you miss our fly through? Have a look here!
Show Gate Volunteering 2023
St Joseph's Catholic School will be operating the gates at the Cloncurry Show this year (Friday 16th June and Saturday 17th June). We will receive $2500 for doing so, which will be used towards updating the Arts room and Drama room. We are hoping to refurbish both of these rooms to match the new building. These classrooms will be utilised when the new building is taking place, by years 3 and 4.
Please find below the link to 2023 Cloncurry & District Show Gate Roster. We have 10 spots that are still open that we would love your support in filling. These are as follows:
- Saturday 2.30pm (2 people needed)
- Saturday 4.30pm (4 people needed)
- Saturday 6.30pm (4 people needed)
All volunteers for the gate must be over 18.

State of Origin Free Dress Day - Wednesday
Our students are welcome to dress in ‘Free Dress’ this Wednesday to celebrate State of Origin. It is however important that students are sunsafe when they are out of uniform. No string straps or dresses. It is important students can participate in all school activities like they usually would. Shoes must be enclosed.
Save the Date - FACE Meeting
Anne-Frances Watson, Sexual Health Educator from Life Education, will be running our session for parents, carers and family members on Personal and Body Safety.
This session will provide parents with an understanding on how to support personal and body safety with their children.
We are excited to offer this to our community and hope that you can join us.
This session is appropriate for all parents and carers.
May God Bless you for the week ahead,
Mrs Samantha Kelley

APRE News
Welcome to Week 7!
With the temperature dropping and the days getting shorter, we officially welcome winter this week.
Reconciliation Week:
This week we celebrate Reconciliation Week. The 2023 theme, “Be a voice for Generations” encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise. We are encouraged to act today for a more just, equitable and reconciled country for all. During the week the classes will discuss how they can be a voice and contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Pentecost:
On Sunday we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Spirit, Pentecost. Pentecost derived from the Greek word "pentecoste," meaning 50th. The feast of Pentecost occurs 50 days after the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Pentecost celebrates the time the Holy Spirit descended to the 12 disciples of Jesus. Christians believe that the Holy Spirit blessed them with the ability to speak different languages. This meant they could easily spread the word of the Lord to the world. It’s also believed to be the start of the Christian church.
Notices:
- Children’s Mass next Sunday (11th June): All children are welcome to join us. Please email me if your child/children will be able to attend. I will take them for a practice this Friday.
Have a blessed week,
Mrs Therese Curley

Pastoral Care
Resilience
Resilience is a term that is used often nowadays and most of us are aware of what this means in terms of our children, but how do we actually build resilience? At SJC, we are implementing various programs, such as the Zones of Regulation, to work on the areas to develop resilience. Resilience gives people the strength to tackle problems head-on, overcome adversity, and move on with their lives.
Zones of Regulation
The Zones of Regulation framework used in our classrooms at St. Joseph’s teaches students scaffolded skills toward developing a metacognitive pathway to build awareness of their feelings/internal state and utilise a variety of tools and strategies for regulation, prosocial skills, self-care, and overall wellness. This includes exploring tools and strategies for mindfulness, sensory integration, movement, thinking strategies, wellness, and healthy connection with others.
The Four Zones: Our Feelings and States Determine our Zone
The Red Zone is used to describe extremely heightened states of alertness and intense emotions. A person may be elated or experiencing anger, rage, devastation or terror when in the Red Zone.
The Yellow Zone is also used to describe a heightened state of alertness and elevated emotions, however one has more control when they are in the Yellow Zone. A person may be experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, the wiggles, or nervousness when in the Yellow Zone.
The Green Zone is used to describe a calm state of alertness. A person may be described as happy, focused, content, or ready to learn when in the Green Zone. This is the zone where optimal learning occurs.
The Blue Zone is used to describe low states of alertness and down feelings such as when one feels sad, tired, sick, or bored.

Welcome to week 7!
I would like to say a huge congratulations to all the children for their wonderful work at assembly on Friday. It can be extremely nerve wracking to stand up in front of the whole school to sing and read. I was so very proud of everyone of them.
This week will be another busy week in Year 3. In writing we will be continuing our work on procedure writing. The children can pick a game or a recipe, write the instructions for it then share with their classmates. The children have all worked extremely hard on their narrative writing for the last few weeks. They have reviewed, edited their writing and have produced amazing work. I will print a copy and send it home for you all to see. In Maths we will be continuing our work 3D shapes, we have constructed 3D shapes and will now look at their properties including faces, vertices and edges. In Religion we will begin our topic Our Parish and Diocese. The children have also been working really hard on their slideshow presentations for their HASS topic ‘I still call Australia Home’. Dear Families,
It's assessment time! Throughout this week, I will collect some assessment data which will help to inform and finalise grading on the Semester 1 Reports. I try to make learners aware that everything they do at school is an assessment but that sometimes we need a piece of paperwork to support teacher judgements.
ENGLISH: This week is an opportunity to complete a range of Spelling and Reading Assessments. If your child is absent this week, we will organise an alternative time on their return. This is an opportune time to remind all learners that they should be reading at least 20 minutes every night. If the only books, texts, digital texts they choose are at a basic level of reading, their vocabulary will not grow. They must discover unfamiliar vocabulary which they can then discuss or research to develop meaning. Information texts are the best way to become an expert on a topic while also developing their range of technical vocabulary. Learners will begin to develop a variety of sentences for their Informative Text.
MATHS: Investigating multiplication strategies has continued to make a difference with learning mathematics. When children are able to recall simple facts quickly, it boosts confidence with other areas of maths. Finding the most efficient strategy to solve different problems is the challenge for all of us.
Multiplication practice: all learners are progressing and need to continue to practise multiplication facts at home. Try throwing a ball to them and firing random questions at your child. Also use UNO Cards to create two fractions that can be added or subtracted.
RELIGION: We will complete our discussions about Pentecost and how the Holy Spirit gave people the ability to understand and speak in different languages. We will also commence our discussions about the characteristics of the Holy Spirit, using our core scripture Galatians 5: 22-23 The Fruits of the Holy Spirit.
PALUMA/GUMBURU CAMP: It is with great excitement that I announce the dates for our Paluma Camp in Term 4 - please be advised that Camp will commence early on Monday 30th October and we will return to Cloncurry on Friday 3rd November. The information from 2022 has been added to our Y5 website - please be aware that this will be finalised and updated closer to Term 4.
Have an amazing week,
Mr Mike Tarleton
Year 6
Week 7 has been the busiest week of the Term in Year 6!
All week, students have been completing their final assessment tasks across Maths, Religion, English, HASS, Health and Science.
They have been working very hard at trying to get everything completed on time.
They are looking forward to reading each other's completed short stories as a part of their English Unit.
We are nearly at the end of the Semester and the school holidays are in sight!

Yr 7 & 8 Language with Mr Delaney
In Japanese this term, the students have been learning about all things portable lunch/Japanese box lunch: obentō (お弁当). We explored the historical and cultural significance of お弁当, including the configuration of ‘dishes’ within the boxes, the colour requirements, and some other cultural expectations. The students then learned about a few key ingredients that are commonly found in お弁当. We investigated the importance of eggs (tamago) in Japanese culture and compared this with Australia. We then looked at onigiri おにぎり (rice balls) and how they are incorporated into portable lunch. We interpreted methods and even had a go at making our own おにぎり in the kitchen before the students learned about which other ingredients follow the colour rules (red, green, yellow) and are commonly found in お弁当. Currently, the students are planning the design and ingredient list of their own お弁当 for their assessment. They will write a short method/recipe for their creation, use rehearsed and modelled language to present their お弁当, spend a lesson cooking next week, and annotate a photograph of their お弁当.
Yr 7 Eng with Mrs Delaney-Lovett
This term, students have been working through an imaginative based unit with a close study of Morris Gleitzman’s novel ‘Once’. To support their understanding of the events this story surrounds - the Holocaust, students have viewed non-fiction texts to compare and contrast human experience in response to ethical and global dilemmas. They have developed an understanding of the ways authors create characters, build suspense, create shock and use language features to create meaning. We have started working on our assessment item in class: a text transformation. This task requires students to embody the writing style and features of Morris Gleitzman, integrate ideas and information relevant to the time period, and embody a character that has already been created - yet transform the story in their own creative way. I look forward to reading their writing once the final piece has been submitted!

Free Kindy for all Queensland Children - Feedback Requested
As you may be aware on Sunday 21 May 2023 the Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the Government will be giving consideration to free kindy for all Queensland children of eligible age (i.e. children in the year before formal schooling commences).
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk acknowledged there are 40,000 families in Queensland already accessing kindy for free or at reduced cost but announced the Queensland Government wants to close the gap and have more children experience crucial play-based learning before entering primary school. The Premier also pointed to the proposal as an opportunity to provide cost of living relief to families.
The Premier spoke to reports from prep teachers that there is a big gap between those children who have attended kindergarten programs and those who have not and pointed out that the Government estimates that about 8,000 Kindergarten age children across the state are still not enrolled at all.
The Department of Education (the department) will develop proposals for consideration by the Government and is undertaking public consultation via a survey to find out how free kindy for every child could help families.
Given the Queensland State Budget will be handed down on 13 June 2023, the department has a very short window to consult and submit a proposal to Government for consideration. Therefore your assistance in completing the survey has been requested.
