Principal's News
Welcome to Week 6,
What a busy, but amazing week we had last week. The Under 8’s Day and Athletics Carnival went so well. I loved having parents and family members join us on the oval for each event. It had such a nice community feel to it. A big thank you to Mr Dom Purcell for organising the event. I witnessed the amount of hours Dom dedicated to making the event a success, thank you! There are still some events to come this week with the 1.5km trail this morning at 7.15am and long jump and high jump trial on Wednesday afternoon at 3pm. We are hoping to have our presentation of age champions and runner ups at our assembly on Friday. If our medals don’t arrive in time we will let you know.
We also had our first Open Day on Saturday morning from 9 to 11am. This Open Day was to attract any member from The Cloncurry Community into our school, however, most of the families that joined us were future Prep Enrolments. We had face painting (thank you to Ruth, Miss Humes and Miss Rachel for helping), a BBQ (thank you to Mr Purcell and Mr Kelley for cooking and serving), Open Classrooms, Goodie Bags and Balloons (thank you to Miss Heather, Miss Sue and Miss Pete). We look forward to continuing this each year. Thank you for helping us spread the word. I would also like to thank the following students who volunteered their time to either face paint or tour families through the school: Knox, Heidi, Nika, Kayden, James, Ada, Charles, Harrison, and Kali.
This Friday we will have our National Reconciliation Week Liturgy to start our assembly. As a school we will be celebrating National Reconciliation Week in Week 7, however, thought it would be nice to start the week with a liturgy. This Friday is also an important day as it is when we acknowledge National Sorry Day. National Sorry Day provides a chance to focus on healing and pursue reconciliation in Australian Society. At St Joseph’s Catholic School we are committed to reconciliation and meet regularly with our steering committee on how this can be achieved in our school. We also have a Reconciliation Action Plan that strives towards reconciliation. At St Joseph’s we stand together.
Show Gate Volunteering 2023
St Joseph's Catholic School will be operating the gates at the Cloncurry Show this year (Friday 16th June and Saturday 17th June). We will receive $2500 for doing so, which will be used towards updating the Arts room and Drama room. We are hoping to refurbish both of these rooms to match the new building. These classrooms will be utilised when the new building is tacking place by years 3 and 4.
Please find below the link to 2023 Cloncurry & District Show Gate Roster. As always the Show is a great community event and this is such a great way to help out so we greatly appreciate everyone that is able to give their time.
The gates will be open for the following times:
- Friday: 8.30am - 4.30pm (minimum of 2 people).
- Saturday: 8.30am - 8.30pm (minimum of 2 people from 830am till 1230pm & a minimum of 4 people from 1230pm till 8.30pm).
Both days will operate on 2 hourly time slots. Please remember each booking is for one person only and separate bookings are required for partners, other family etc.
Roles for the gates:
- Operate the main ticketing gate of The Cloncurry Show 2023.
- scanning, charging and ticketing patrons as they enter, taking and processing of cash and EFTPOS transactions on behalf of the Cloncurry and District Show and to issue armbands.
- Maintain good hygiene at all times by using hand sanitiser, bacterial wipes throughout your shift.
- Maintain a welcoming manner - you're the first face patrons will see on the day!
All volunteers for the gate must be over 18.

School Feedback Survey's
Townsville Catholic Education is working with all schools within the Diocese to improve the education experience provided to our students. As a way to gain this feedback, all staff and families within our school communities will be sent a survey to shape the future directions of our schools.
Your responses are very important in this process as we continue to strive to provide the best educational, social, spiritual and emotional resources and environment for our children.
The surveys will be distributed via email on Wednesday 10 May and we ask that they are completed by Wednesday 31 May. If you have children and/or work at more than one Catholic school, you will receive a survey for each school.
I would like to thank you in advance for providing feedback and assisting us to improve our school.
May God Bless you and your families for the week ahead,
Kind Regards,
Mrs Samantha Kelley
Principal
APRE News
Welcome to week 6. Tomorrow we are celebrating mass at school for The Feast of Mary, Help of Christians. We are blessed to have Fr Emene to share in this mass.
Mary, Help of Christians
The feast day for Mary, Help of Christians has been celebrated in Australia since 1844. In the early days there were no priests in the colonies and it was largely the Rosary and praying to Mary that kept the faith alive. Catholic Australia remained faithful to Mary and was the first nation to choose her under the title “Help of Christians” as our principal Patroness. We will come together on Wednesday at 1.50pm in the Mary MacKillop Shed for our Mass.
Laudato Si’ Week 2023 - May 21-28
This week will mark the anniversary of Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical (letter written by the Pope) on creation care. It focuses on care for the natural environment and all people, as well as broader questions of the relationship between God, humans, and the Earth. The encyclical's subtitle, “Care for Our Common Home,” reinforces these key themes.
The aim of this global celebration is to unite Catholics to listen and respond together to the cry of creation and rejoice in the progress we have made in bringing Laudato Si’ to life.
In our call to Action Assembly this week we watched a video explaining Pope Francis’ vision and discussed ways we can "Care for Our Common Home". I have attached the link here. You may like to focus your dinner time discussion this week on ways we can care for Our Common Home/Environment.
Notices:
- This Wednesday 24th May (tomorrow) Whole School Mass: 1:50 pm in St. Mary Mackillop Shed - Fr Emene will join us for this mass for Mary Help of Christians Feast Day. School and Parish community are welcome to join us.
- Year 3 are on Assembly prayer this week.
- Sunday 11th June (Week 8) Children’s Mass 8:30 am
Have a blessed week,
Mrs Therese Curley

Pastoral Care
Term 2 is well underway and the Year 7-9 students have begun preparing for their end of semester assessments whilst teachers are busy marking and writing reports. Therefore it is vital that students submit their tasks on the due date. If students are unable to do so, you need to contact their teacher as soon as possible. Teachers will contact parents and caregivers if students do not meet task/assessment due dates. If you notice your child starting to become worried or stressed about the assessment period, I would encourage you to reach out to either Mr Kelley, Head of Teaching & Learning or myself, so we can offer support during school hours.
Philippians 4:6-7 says "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Cloncurry & District Show - 16 & 17th June
Our Years 7-9 students have been asked to be wait staff for dinner service and clean up at the annual Cattlemen's Dinner. They will be required to be at the venue (the Precinct) from approximately 6pm - 9.30pm and to attend clean up the next morning (time to be confirmed). They will need to wear a plain white shirt, black long pants and cover in black shoes for the evening event. In return for their assistance, the Cloncurry & District Show Society will remunerate students for their time. I will be overseeing the students on the night. Please keep your eye out for an email next week.
Drug and Alcohol Use
Many parents are concerned about the use of alcohol, as well as other drugs, as their children grow up. For kids, a one time or infrequent use of alcohol or drugs can unfortunately result in tragedy such as unintentional injuries, homicide or even suicide. Young people who use alcohol and drugs before their brain is fully developed, are often at greater risk of future addiction.
Research has shown that a young person’s brain keeps developing until they are in their mid-twenties, making alcohol more harmful than previously thought. Even the casual use of certain drugs can cause severe health problems, such as an overdose or brain damage. Parents will often feel overwhelmed when having to deal with substance abuse issues. However, they are encouraged to lead by example and set behavioural boundaries for their kids.
In this edition of SchoolTV parents will learn how to deal with the issues surrounding drug and alcohol use and the impact it can have on a child’s development. Alcohol and drug use can lead to serious problems such as poor academic performance, loss of friends, behavioural issues and even lasting legal problems.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Our baby chickens are growing rapidly and now have names-Rosie, Taco and Peanut 1 and 2.
Last week the class planted some tomato, zucchini and snow peas. This week we will construct a frame for our snow peas to climb up.
In literacy we will continue working through our Set 4 words and sounds. These are listed on the sheet that got sent home in reading folders. The Sentence Train will continue to be used to identify the subject (who) and the adverbial phrase (what / doing) of sentences. We will also be focusing on sentences having a capital letter at the start and a full stop at the end.
During Math this week the class will be consolidating number to 10, this will include identifying how many more are needed to make 10. In religion we will learn about Mary, Mother of Jesus and how to say part of the Rosary. Year 5
Dear Families,
Thank you to families and learners for a terrific Sports Carnival last Friday. The behaviour and effort demonstrated by Year 5 learners was exceptional and very much appreciated.
ENGLISH: This week, we continue to research for our writing of informative texts about topics of interest. We investigate the 'Explore the Subject' Sentence type and will continue to promote 'Precision' (using names, dates, numbers etc to be more precise) and 'Expansion' (giving the audience more facts about a topic rather than rushing our writing). We continue to investigate informative texts about Light to discuss the structure and language features which we will use in our own texts. Our Sound Waves spelling focus is on words with [e ee ea y and ey] and continued investigation into homophones - words which sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings.
MATHS: In Think Mentals, we continue to investigate multiplication - using the strategy of friendly and fix. e.g. 79 x 4 becomes 80 x 4 take away 1 x 4. We discuss removing the zero place holder (but need to remember to return it at the end). We also continue to investigate the subtraction and addition of fractions with the same and similar denominators. Multiplication practice: all learners are progressing and need to continue to practice multiplication facts at home. Try throwing a ball to them and firing random questions at your child. Also use UNO Cards to create two fractions that can be added or subtracted.
RELIGION: We continue to investigate the story of Pentecost from Acts 2: 1-15. Engaging learners in tasks where they need to use their senses to imagine what it may have been like to be visited by the Holy Spirit. We will also reflect on the emotions experienced by people at that time of celebration.
SCIENCE: This week, we continue to investigate Light Boxes to discuss and record what happens when different coloured transparent slides are used when light is shone onto different objects - e.g. what happens to the red apple when the red transparent slide is used? We will discuss the use of labelled diagrams that explain what we discover.
Check out our latest Y5 Reporter on the Y5 News site.
Have an amazing week,
Mr Mike Tarleton
Year 6

In Maths, students have completed some of their Maths Test for the term and we are nearly finished covering all of the concepts in Math for the semester. Later this week, we will look to complete our Religion and Science assessments.
It is going to be a very busy fortnight in Year 6!

UMY - Spotlight
Year 7 & 8 Physical Education with Mr Delaney
This term, our Health and Physical Education units are closely related. The students have been learning about all things fitness: energy production, components of fitness, types of training, and somatotypes. Informing their Physical Education practical lessons, the students will participate in a range of workouts/fitness sessions targeted at the different components of fitness. Amongst their athletics practice, they will also determine and classify which events relate to the fitness principles listed above.
Year 9 Physical Education with Mr Delaney
The Year 9 students have also been practicing the skills and techniques required for the athletics events (discus, shot put, long jump & high jump). They were assessed on these events during class time based on the observation of complex movement sequences and applying feedback.
We will also be learning about and participating in some modified softball gameplay. This will include pitching, batting, and implementing strategic responses to situations when running between bases and fielding.
Yr 9 History with Mr Kelley
The Year 9 students have been hard at work looking at all things, Industrial Revolution this term. They have made connections between technology that was created 200 - 300 years ago and how it has evolved into modern society. Our history unit will conclude this week and we will be moving on to Civics and Citizenship, where students will examine Australia's political and legal system, and what it means to be an active citizen in Australia.
During Civics and Citizenship, students will identify the different roles of The House of Representatives and the Senate.
