Principal News
Welcome to Week 5,
What a busy week we had last week. On Monday we had a lockdown drill, Tuesday we had a P&F Meeting, Thursday we celebrated child safety in light of Day for Daniel and Friday we started our morning with breakfast for Grandparents Day (a big thank you to Miss Pete - amazing work), followed by assembly, SRC sport at morning tea and our Founders Day Fun Run to end the day. Although busy, it was a perfect way for our schooling community to come together.
This week we have our year 5 students away on camp, two excursions being a performance at The Cloncurry Council today for Prep to Year 3 and a Geology excursion to EHM for year 8, as well as a celebration on Friday for Mission Month. On Friday students are welcome to wear out of uniform and bring a gold coin, donations will go towards Mission Month. We will have a liturgy and a Soktober Challenge.
Year 5 Camp
Our year 5 students are off - departing at 530am on Monday morning for a week full of adventures. Accompanied by Mr Tarleton, Mr Murray and Miss Pete our students set off to Paluma for a fun filled week of team building activities.

All souls and All saints Day
In the Catholic tradition, November is traditionally a month of remembrance of the dead. The month begins with the Solemnity of All Saints on 1 November. All Saints’ Day commemorates all the saints in heaven.
All Souls’ Day follows All Saints Day on 2 November and is also known as the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed and the Day of the Dead. It is a day of prayer and remembrance for the souls of those who have died. While no longer holy days of obligation in Australia, the Church has consistently encouraged prayers for the faithful departed during November.
Mission Month Liturgy followed by soctober shootout - Friday
This Friday our Year 8 class will lead us in a special prayer for Catholic Mission Month. Following our assembly the students will participate in a Socktober shootout. Classes have prepared for the shootout and made socktober balls. Families are welcome to join us for this shootout.
Gold Coin Free Dress for Catholic Mission - Friday
Students are able to come to school in free dress (sun safe clothing and closed in shoes) this Friday 4th Nov. Money raised will go towards Catholic Mission.

Day for Daniel
The Day for Daniel is Australia’s largest child safety education and awareness day and I thank all who wore a red T-shirt last Thursday. In our classrooms, students participated in child safety education activities about personal safety. Please continue the conservation about child safety at home - one of the activities is to nominate five people in a child’s safety network; they must be adults and should include someone who lives at home, males and females, as well as people who live outside the home.
Bullying
Bullying is never ok. It’s hurtful and can impact someone for a long time. Remember, you’re not alone. There are people here at school that your child can talk to and things you can do to stop the bullying.
What is bullying?
It's more than just a fight or disliking someone. It’s being mean to someone over and over again. Bullying is an ongoing or repeated misuse of power in relationships, with the intention to cause deliberate (on purpose) psychological harm. Bullying behaviours can be verbal, physical or social.
Bullying can happen anywhere – at home, online, with friends, in a group, on the bus or at school. There are many different types of bullying:
- Mental
- Physical
- Social
- Cyberbullying
Why do people bully others?
There are lots of reasons why someone might bully others. Whatever the reason, bullying is never ok. Someone who bullies another person might:
- Feel jealous
- Want others to like them
- Want to feel better about themselves
- Want to fit in with their friends
- Feel angry inside
- Like to be in control or have power over others
- Have been bullied themselves
- Not know what they're doing is wrong
What to do if you’re being bullied?
There’s always something you can do. Here are some ideas:
- Keep your distance from bullying
- Don’t bully them back
- Tell them what they are doing is not ok
- Talk to an adult you trust
- Report all incidents at school to a teacher as soon as it happens
- Take time to do something nice for yourself
- Have someone help you report cyberbullying or assault
Everyone needs a support team!
Let us be a part of yours. If you’re being bullied, it’s really important to talk to someone you trust. We’re always here to help. Give us a call, talk to us in person or email us today.

Miss Leonie Ansell
Year 3
Welcome to week 5,
As we continue with our assessments this week, it is great to see our students demonstrating a determination to improve their work.
When reading, I am encouraging our students to focus on expression when reading aloud. This means reading aloud with feeling. Expression shows that students understand the text they are reading. I have asked students to record themselves reading - if you cannot do this at home we will also be having a go at school.
Maths - we continue our work on angles. Last week we looked around the school. This week we will look inside the classroom.
English - We had a short revisit of poetry. Our focus is on expression when reading and how punctuation is so important when we write,
HASS - We continue the discussion about change in our local area.
Science - This week we will be experimenting with ice - how long does it take to melt and what changes do we need to make to speed up the process?
Religion - We will be identifying some of the cultural aspects significant to the life of Jesus such as food, clothes and rituals.
Reminders
- Tuesday - Little Red Riding Hood performance at Cloncurry Shire Hall.
- Wednesday - swimming
- Thursday - Library
- Friday - Assembly and Socktober - Free Dress Day - Gold Coin Donation
We hope you have a fantastic week.
Mrs Deb McCann
Year 4
Hi everyone,
Religion: This week we have really started getting stuck into our assessments, starting with Religion. Students have been looking at the 8 principles that a Christian Community is modelled on to ensure they are walking in the footsteps of Jesus. We have looked at our school and parish community and now they are identifying these principles in the Vinnies organisation.
Maths- Students have been completing a number revision test so that I can identify any areas that we need more work on. We have also been looking at some NAPLAN type questions as NAPLAN is quite early next year and I want them to be aware of the types of questions and language used in NAPLAN.
Science: The students have been continuing to investigate the properties of materials. I have taken a step back and am making them prepare their materials and procedures for experiments so that they are really considering the variables and how to make a test fair.
English: This week we begin our Persuasive writing unit. Many of the skills we learnt in the narrative unit will transfer to this type of writing. I am also focusing on the speed of getting their ideas down as some are reluctant to write all the ideas that come into their head, just in case it isn’t quite right. Students will be completing a number of quick writes to improve on this skill.
Have a wonderful week!
Mrs Lesley Wall
Year 5
Our year 5 students are having the time of their lives at Paluma!
Gumburu are an educational centre that run school camps in Paluma. Our year 5 students go here each year. These camps are not only informative and provide a great depth of knowledge, but they give valuable time for our students to bond with one another.
Photos will be shared throughout the week on facebook.
If you want to jump onto the Gumburu website to learn more, please visit the link below:

Enjoy your week,
Mr Mike Tarelton
Year 6
Welcome to Week 5!
This week’s learning focuses:
Religion: Students are consolidating their knowledge of the works of mercy before exploring Jesus’ New Law.
English: We will be using the characters that we have developed to begin playing our role-play game that will form the basis for our narrative.
Maths: This week, the students will begin a maths investigation to design a water park which will partially assess their learning of volume and capacity.
HASS: We will be exploring Australia’s parliament, including the roles and responsibilities of ministers.
Our PE day has changed to every Tuesday for this term. This will be for water safety and familiarisation lessons. Library is still on Wednesdays.
Keep an eye out for any homework that comes home with students. Encourage them to bring their diary back into class and sign their entries. When asking students about their day, please feel free to ask them some questions based on the learning focuses above! This is a great way for them to communicate what they are learning about and to consolidate the learning that is taking place in the classroom.
Have a blessed week!
Mr. James Delaney and the Year 6 Legends!

Year 7 History with Mrs Schneekloth
We’ve just finished our units in History and are moving onto Civics and Citizenship. Students focused on the ancient historical period between 60 000 BCE and 650 BCE. The in depth studies included units on 'The Ancient Past', 'Ancient Rome' and 'Ancient China'. Each unit focused on developing students understanding of each ancient civilization and developing inquiry skills such as questioning, researching, analysing and applying.
Students have investigated the ancient past by looking into the death of the Narrabeen Man, learned about Ancient Rome and the legacies that have stood the test of time and finally ending with Ancient China and the formidable Emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi. They completed a series of assignments including a forensic report, letter from an Ancient Roman to a contemporary friend and either a poster or information report on a significant individual.
Year 9 Maths with Mrs Laffey
We are masters of Pythagoras. We can find missing sides and we can determine if a triangle is right angled or not! As usual with Pythag it is all about not making small errors like mislabelling a, b & c, or writing 2 when we meant 6. The only way to fix this is practice. Please remind all students to keep completing the online activities on Google Classroom. Even if they have done it once, they can do it again! We are beginning Trigonometry this week. The students have expressed surprise at how easy they are finding it, and we have some weeks yet to practice. I am extremely proud of how far this group of year 9 students have come this year. The effort they have put in, and the growth they have shown in, particularly in their mathematical communication is impressive.
Year 7 English & Religion with Mrs Lovett-Delaney
English
This term, students have viewed the 2014 film “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief” as a mentor text for the basis of their unit of work - imaginative writing. They have broken down the elements of a short story and experimented with manipulating the structure and features for different effects. Students have imagined themselves as a Greek God/Goddess and created a mythological beast as a part of character and setting development. I have been extremely impressed with the level of creativity the students are demonstrating in the work! I look forward to reading their imaginative text assessments - they’ve set the bar high!
Religion
This term the students will engage with 2 religion topics. We are just reaching the end of our first topic - Journey in Faith. Students have paid particular attention to the sacraments in the Catholic Church and how this links to, supports, and guides an individual’s journey in the Christian faith. For assessment, students have selected one sacrament to use in the development of an infographic that could be displayed in a Parish community. Some students have completed this task, which is wonderful. A gentle reminder that students must have this task submitted on Friday, 4th November. I will send an email home to those that have yet to submit their work.
Have a wonderful week!

Student Wellbeing
Whether it is starting school for the first time, moving up to a higher grade or embarking on a journey through secondary school, there is no doubt that any school transition is a very exciting time for children and parents. It means your children are growing up!
However, transitioning is an ongoing process. It can continue long after students have entered their new environment and may encounter difficulties at a number of different stages. These stressors may appear as anxiety and frustration and result in negative or disruptive behaviours. Such behaviours can become problematic making the transitioning process even more difficult for children and parents.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn practical strategies to assist your child during the transition process and reduce stress and anxiety levels.

Socktober
In Week 5 we will celebrate a Catholic Mission Liturgy on Friday 4th November, followed by a Socktober shootout competition. This day will be a “Gold Coin Free Dress Day”. More information will be provided closer to the event.
Save the Date - Awards Night & Christmas Concert
We will be trialing a new way to acknowledge the achievement of our students and celebrate christmas this year. We have booked the Cloncurry Shire Council for this evening. We hope that this change will make the end of year mass a little bit shorter - due to our school numbers growing we can no longer fit in the Church for this celebration and it is quite hot under the shed.
