Welcome to Week 4,
Swimming Carnival - Friday 21st October 2022
Wow, just like that our swimming carnival is over for another year and what a day it was. Credit must be given to Mr Scott Murray for his organisation behind this event, to Lizzie and Nerissa O’Brien for going above and beyond to ensure the day went well and lastly a big thank you to our wonderful staff and volunteers.
Please see Scott Murray’s email outlining the date for medals to be presented to students. We would love for you to join us on Friday 11th November at 8.30am in the Mary MacKillop Shed.
Day for Daniel
This coming Friday the 28th of October is Day for Daniel day, which is Australia’s largest day of action to raise awareness for child safety, child protection and harm prevention. Day for Daniel is held annually on the last Friday of October to honour the memory of Daniel Morcombe.
As we have World Teachers Day, Grand Parents Day and Founders Day on Friday we found it important to move this day forward to Thursday the 27th of October. It is important that we stop and give this day the awareness that it needs.
Parents, carers, and educators are encouraged to start a conversation with children and young people about personal safety. We regularly engage in conversations with students about child safety and provide many educational activities to ensure that children feel safe and know how to communicate if they don’t.
Students are encouraged to wear red this coming Thursday the 27th of October to show our support for this important cause.
World Teachers Day
This Friday we will also be celebrating world teachers day. World Teachers Day is is a day for us to stop and appreciate those that make such a big difference in the lives of our students each and every day. It is also a day for teachers to celebrate and be proud of their achievements as an educator.
These past few years in particular have been quite challenging for teachers as they have had to navigate through uncertain times. Education continued across the world in the uncertain times of COVID-19 and it is the dedication and hardwork of our teachers that made this possible.
It is also important that we take the time to celebrate St Mary MacKillop whose teachings pathed the way for the schooling that we get to learn and develop in today.
As a school we celebrated together this year on Staff Appreciation Day, however, we will acknowledge World Teachers Day with a beverage of choice (a nice way to start the day!).
Fridays Schedule:
Grandparents' Day
This Sunday the 29th of October is Grandparents’ Day in Australia. We will be celebrating this with breakfast on Friday morning in the MMS from 7.45am. Our schooling community has come together this week to write some letters of gratitude to either the students' grandparents and/or someone in their life that they would like to say thank you for. Please come along and join us on Friday. This breakfast is open to all students, parents, friends, and community members.
Year 5 Camp
Our Year 5 students are very excited to be embarking on Camp next week. The students will be off for a week full of adventures at Gumburu Environmental Center. The Gumburu Environmental Education Center is located in the World Heritage Listed Paluma rainforest. The students will be accompanied by Mr Michael Tarleton, Mr Scott Murray and Mrs Peta McIntyre. I would like to thank Mr Tarleton for the many hours that has gone into organising the year 5 camp for our students.
Staffing Update (Departures)
Mr Scott Murray will be taking a year of leave from St Josephs in 2023 as he has been appointed as the Principal of St Francis Catholic School, Hughenden. This is a very exciting step for Scott and we are so happy for him. Please congratulate Scott when you see him.
Mrs Chris Chaplain will be retiring from teaching at the end of 2022. This is also Chris’ 15th year in Catholic Education which makes it a very special year. We will have time to celebrate with Chris at the end of the term and thank her for years of wonderful service.
You may have read in my newsletter a couple of weeks ago that Mrs Lesley Wall will be taking a year of leave without pay in 2023. Lesley will be going on a European holiday at the end of the year and will embark on a new employment journey in her families company.
Staffing Update (2023 Announcements)
I have been spending a lot of time focusing on recruiting for 2023 and I am very excited to welcome Dom Purcell to our teaching team in 2023 (teaching year level not yet confirmed).
Mr Dominic Purcell
G'day everyone! My name is Dom Purcell and I'm excited to be teaching at St Joseph's Cloncurry in 2023. I'm born and bred in Townsville and have lived here my whole life along with my 5 older brothers and my parents. In 2017 I spent 3 weeks at St Joseph's while practicing to become a teacher and I loved it so much I thought it was time I came back as a teacher! My memories are of a very welcoming community and a great place to be around. I love my sport, in particular Rugby League and the mighty Cowboys. I look forward to meeting you all and becoming a part of your community next year.
Mr Purcell will be here for our move up day in Week 7.
Kind Regards,
Mrs Samantha Kelley

Founders Day Colour Fun Run - Friday 28th October
On 28th October 1909 - 113 years ago - St Joseph's was founded. This making this day our “Founders Day”
It all started with a conversion between Bishop Duhig, Father O’Keefe (who was the Cloncurry parish priest at the time) and Mother Mary of the Cross in early 1909. O'Keefe and Duhig asked Mother Mary for her assistance to open a school in Cloncurry. At the time no sisters were available. However, Mother Mary interposed with “The sisters will be found. Our Lord will see to it.”
A short time later Mother Mary died, but not before she had established that her nursing sisters would travel to Cloncurry and open St Joseph’s. So it was on October 28th, 1909, at midnight Mother Mary's nurses, Srs: Berchmans, Cecilia, Rosarii and Audrey arrived by train into Cloncurry. And it was on that same day that they opened St Joseph’s School to 75 students who were taught in a bough shed.
As a fun way to remember this significant date we are hosting a St Joseph’s Founders Day Colour Fun Run. All students are able to come to school dressed for the Colour Run. The Colour run will take place after 2nd lunch at 1:50 pm till the end of school. Students are encouraged to bring a towel as they may need to dry off before traveling home.
Day for Daniel
This week we are turning our students attention to child safety, by recognising “Day for Daniel”. Students can wear a red shirt to school on Thursday. Classes will be covering child safety awareness lessons during this day. Child safety is everyone's business!
Grandparents day
This Friday we are joining our Chaplaincy breakfast with a breakfast for our Grandparents to Celebrate World Grandparents Day. Please invite your grandparents to come along!

SCHOOL REFUSAL
School refusal, sometimes called school avoidance or school phobia, is not uncommon. It is different to ‘wagging’ or truancy and is often related to worry or anxiety-related issues about going to school. School refusal may start gradually or happen suddenly. Although it is normal for a child to occasionally miss a day of school, parents should only be concerned if a child regularly complains about feeling sick or often asks to stay home due to minor physical complaints.
School refusal is a complex issue as there is rarely a single cause. It affects children of all ages across primary and secondary levels. It can often occur during times of transition at school. More recently, the Coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the educational experience of all students, affecting some more than others. Dealing with a school refusal child can affect the whole family, adding pressure to an already challenging time. School refusal is not considered a formal psychiatric diagnosis. It’s a name given to an emotional and/or behavioural problem.
In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers will learn how best to approach this issue and work towards a solution.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact Toni Schneekloth, Pastoral Care Leader, or Bec Greaves, Guidance Counsellor, for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Year 1
Hello everyone,
As we are reaching the halfway point of the term we are beginning to complete final assessments for the year.
Mathematics: In math this week we are starting our unit of work on chance and data. Students will be asking questions to collect data and drawing simple data displays.
English: This week in English, we will complete our Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley character reflections. We have spent the last week drafting our writing and ‘bumping it up’ to be the best work we can do.
Science: Science this term explores changes in the landscape and how they affect people/activities. We have been specifically looking at the changes in the weather as well as day and night sky observations.
Health: We have completed one of our two health units on selecting and applying strategies to keep our bodies healthy and safe in the sun. This week we also acknowledge a Day for Daniel, where we spend time to educate our students about how to keep ourselves safe. This aligns perfectly with our health unit on safety through three simple rules; We all have the right to feel safe with people, It’s ok to say NO if you feel unsafe or unsure, Nothing is so yucky that you can’t tell someone about it.
Reminders:
- Wednesday: Swimming
- Thursday: Library, Homework due, Day for Daniel - PLEASE WEAR A RED SHIRT
- Friday: Founder’s Day Colour Run - PLEASE WEAR A WHITE SHIRT
Have a wonderful week,
Miss Mae-Louise Brock

I will be away on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week. The class will be taken by Mrs Cullen.
Miss Leonie Ansell
Year 3
As we reach the halfway point of the school year, we are beginning our final assessments. We try to complete our assessments in the morning when our students are well rested. If you know that your child will be away before the end of the year, please let me know so that I can make arrangements for missed assessments.

On Thursday we will engage in activities related to this. Our students are encouraged to wear a red t-shirt on Thursday.

Year 4
Hi Everyone,
It was great to see all of our Year 4 students at the swimming carnival on Friday. It was a lovely day with lots of smiles all around and plenty of ribbons won. Don’t forget the Colour Run this Friday to celebrate our Founder’s Day.
HaSS: We have been analysing data about the climate and natural environment of Johannesberg to compare and contrast to Sydney where we are going to set up a zoo enclosure for a giraffe. For their assessment, students will be following exactly the same procedure to investigate a city in South America and pretend that they are setting up an enclosure for a native animal from there. Once they have finished they can make a diorama of the enclosure. Could you please start sending in any shoe boxes/smaller boxes that the students can use.
Day for Daniel: We will be acknowledging this on Thursday so students are allowed to wear red.
Christmas Concert- This is to be held on the Wednesday of Week 8. Our students do not need a special outfit, however it would be good if they could wear something Christmassy.
Have a good week,
Mrs Lesley Wall
Year 5
Hi everyone, ONE WEEK until School camp!!! If you have any additional information for me or would like to catch me regarding medication for camp, please see me after school.
English: We continue our sentence level work, while discussing headings for topics and an introductory paragraph to start our own information text about one of the animals we hope to see in Paluma. Each student is finalising their research and is working towards creating a display which we will share with Year 2 students after camp. They are also developing a Google Site that can be viewed alongside their display along with a simple quiz for the younger students.
Maths: We completed our Google Form surveys that we’re asking our Year 4 students to complete this week. Then we commence our work on angles - developing an understanding of acute (less than 900) and obtuse (90-1800) as well as measuring the angles accurately. We will also continue to work on our recall of multiplication facts.
Science: In Science, we have continued to inquire into structural adaptations and have investigated what different bird beaks and bills are like. We have discussed why they may be shaped or structured the way they are. We are continuing to explore birds this week - focussing on their nests and bone structures (anatomical adaptation).
Religion: We are developing our understanding of Mary as the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of the Church. We will conduct a slow motion discussion with guiding questions and statements, reflecting on the two Gospel versions of the birth of Jesus.
Key Dates/Times:
- School Camp: Monday 31st October - Friday 4th November
- Camp departure: 5:30 am
- Swimming/PE Lesson: Tuesdays
Enjoy your week,
Mr Mike Tarelton
Year 6
Welcome to Week 4!
This week’s learning focuses:
Religion: This week, we will be learning about the works of mercy and how they apply to following in Jesus’ footsteps.
English: The students will be developing their own fantasy character - looking in depth at a backstory and personality traits to add detail to their writing.
Maths: We are learning the formula for volume and practising in a range of contexts. This will lead us into converting to units of capacity.
HaSS: This week, students will be exploring democracy and its foundations. They will be familiarised with the Magna Carta and what this means for our own legal system.
Our PE day has changed to every Tuesday for this term. This will be for water safety and familiarisation lessons. Library is still on Wednesdays.
Keep an eye out for any homework that comes home with students. Encourage them to bring their diary back into class and sign their entries. When asking students about their day, please feel free to ask them some questions based on the learning focuses above! This is a great way for them to communicate what they are learning about and to consolidate the learning that is taking place in the classroom.
Have a blessed week!
Mr. James Delaney and the Year 6 Legends!
UMY Spotlight
Year 7 Science with Mr Murray:
In Science students are learning to classify organisms based on their physical characteristics. They are applying scientific conventions to construct and use dichotomous keys to assist and describe classification. Students analyse the effectiveness of dichotomous keys and suggest improvements and will consider how and why classification systems are used in a variety of occupations. Students will explore feeding relationships between organisms in an environment using food chains and food webs and construct representations of these relationships using second-hand data.
Library News
Welcome to Term 4,
A busy term ahead with the Reading Challenge, Books in Homes and all the Christmas festivities coming towards the end of term.
For those eager to join the Reading Challenge we are having at school, I ask you to come and borrow some books from the Library. As it is a school Reading Challenge, books from the library are only allowed. We have plenty to offer all ages.
I hope this will bring enjoyment for our children and encourage them to read more.
Mrs Chris Chaplain
Teacher/Librarian.
Student Wellbeing
This week we focus on child safety during Day for Daniel. At school, your child will participate in a variety of activities designed to help them stay safe. But what can we as parents do at home to help with this too?
Creating a family password is one idea that you can use. It is coming up with a word as a family that will be used when plans change so that your child(ren) knows that the person telling them “hey, Mum is running late and asked me to pick you up” can be trusted.
This idea behind the plan is that when you ask someone to collect your child you will give them the password. Then, when they are telling your child about the change in plans they will repeat the password. Your child then knows that you have actually asked for this to happen and will go with the person.
If the person trying to take your child does not use the password, your child can ask them for it. If they are unable to provide the password, that is your child’s signal to leave the situation and get help immediately.
Please watch this video for more information on creating a family password. It is a quick and simple plan that can have a huge impact on your child’s safety.
Friday 4th November - Mission Month Mass & Soktober Challenge
Friday Afternoon Fundraiser
We will have Icy Poles for sale each Friday to help raise funds for Catholic Mission. Please keep an eye out in the primary eating area. Door will open around 2.50pm.
Socktober
In Week 5 we will celebrate a Catholic Mission Liturgy on Friday 4th November, followed by a Socktober shootout competition. This day will be a “Gold Coin Free Dress Day”. More information will be provided closer to the event.
Save the Date - Awards Night & Christmas Concert
We will be trialing a new way to acknowledge the achievement of our students and celebrate christmas this year. We have booked the Cloncurry Shire Council for this evening. We hope that this change will make the end of year mass a little bit shorter - due to our school numbers growing we can no longer fit in the Church for this celebration and it is quite hot under the shed.
