Principal News
Welcome to Week 2,
We are now in full swing of what I am sure will be a blockbusting term at St Joseph’s.
Emerging Leaders Roadshow:
We had 8 of our Emerging Leaders travel to Mount Isa yesterday with our Indigenous Education Leader Mrs Louise Martin and parent volunteer Mr Stephen Dolan to participate in the Emerging Leaders Mental Health and Wellbeing Roadshow at Good Shepherd Catholic College. I have received fantastic feedback about our students' engagement in this event and their behaviour. This event showcased cultural and wellbeing workshops with a number of guest speakers including Naomi Wenitong, Preston Campbell, Tristan Nelliman-Adams, Patrick Mau and Toby Adams. As the students returned to school this morning they were very excited to share stories of the event, what a wonderful experience - a big thank you to the team at Townsville Catholic Education that made this possible.
Rock Pop 2022:
It is Rock Pop Week! Our Junior and Senior group attempted to travel to Mount Isa yesterday for their rehearsal on the big stage, however, some unforeseen circumstances meant that this had to be cancelled and rehearsals were held at school. I would like to thank our parents and family members that volunteered to take students yesterday, I acknowledge that for many of you this meant applying for time off work and I hope you know how much we appreciate it.
There will also be a ‘sneak peak’ performance this Thursday evening for parents and friends of Rock Pop Performers and Staff. There has been a lot of hard work and dedication that has gone into both the junior and senior performances and I look forward to seeing this come to life. I would like to formally thank the wonderful staff that have put so much time into this - to Mrs Rachel Delaney-Lovett, Miss Mae-Louise Brock, Miss Leonie Ansell and Mrs Rachel Adcock, thank you!
The BIG SHOW is on Friday evening in Mount Isa, we hope to see you there. We would love to sit together this year to cheer on our school. We will put some picnic blankets and chairs out on the right hand side of the stage - please join us. A reminder that your child, being a performer or not, is your responsibility at Rock Pop and supervision will not be provided by staff or volunteers at the event.
Staff Departures 2023:
It is with a heavy heart that the St Joseph’s community will farewell Mrs. Lesley Wall at the conclusion of Term 4 for the 2023 school year. Lesley will be taking a year of leave once she returns from an amazing European holiday and will embark on a new journey within her family's business. We will be so sad to have Lesley step out of the St Joseph’s teaching team for a year, however, we are so excited for Lesley on this new adventure.
2023 Enrolments
Help us spread the word! We have had a number of enquiries this week about enrolments for 2023. Please note that enrolments are still open and we welcome new and returning families to join us. To find out more information about enrolments please pop into the front office, phone or email the school on (07) 4742 1633 or clncry@tsv.catholic.edu.au
Professional Development - Principals Conference:
Please note that I will be traveling to Townsville next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the Term 4 Principals Conference. I will still be contactable on email (skelley2@sjctsv.catholic.edu.au) or alternatively you can pop into the school and speak to Assistant Principal - Therese Curley in my absence.
Kind Regards,
Mrs Samantha Kelley
Principal
APRE News
Welcome to Week 2!
Mission Month
This October, we are celebrating World Mission Month, a month dedicated to the life-giving work of missionaries around the world.
This year, we support the Church of Ethiopia and the local communities towards providing life-changing opportunities to those most in need.
Catholic Mission’s goal for 2022 is food security and life-saving nutrition in Ethiopia.
Pope Francis, in his 2022 World Mission Sunday message, invites everyone to answer the call to be missionary, sharing that "Mission is carried out together, not individually...".
Father Emene visited our classes today and spoke to the students about the importance of our support to Catholic Mission and the vision to carry out the Mission together.
This month St Joseph’s will join with other communities across Australia and raise funds to support families in Ethiopia facing malnutrition and food insecurity.
These funds will assist with the projects on the ground, helping sustain and enrich the lives of vulnerable children who are in need of our support.
Our support will keep them running!!!
Catholic Mission Liturgy:
- (Socktober shootout and Gold Coin Free Dress Day)
In Week 5 we will celebrate a Catholic Mission Liturgy on Friday 4th November, followed by a Socktober shootout competition. This day will be a “Gold Coin Free Dress Day”. More information will be provided closer to the event.
We will also have Icy Poles for sale each Friday to help raise funds for Catholic Mission. - Cathloic Mission Mass with Bishop Tim:
20th October (Week 3) at 9:50am, Good Shepherd Catholic College
On Thursday 20th of October Bishop Tim will be visiting Mount Isa and will present a special Combined Schools Mass. Our Cloncurry community is welcome to attend this Mass. St Joseph’s school leaders will travel up for the mass. Information and permission forms were sent home with the leaders yesterday. Please return these forms by Friday 14th Oct. - Reconciliation:
The final step for our Sacremenal candidates is First Reconciliation. Reconciliation [once called Confession or Penance] is the sacrament of God’s loving forgiveness. It allows for our sorrow for wrong-doing and a desire to be reconciled with God and therefore the forgiveness of sins. Our 2021 and 2022 candidates will be contacted via email this week to communicate the process of First Reconciliation.

Pastoral Care
Get Active
(taken from the Australian Government - Department of Health and Aged Care)
Being active is important to good health and wellbeing at any age. Read about what we mean by physical activity and sedentary behaviour, how active Australians are, and why everyone should be active every day to stay healthy.
Physical activity is anything that gets your body moving, makes you breathe faster and speeds up your heart rate. Physical activity comes in many forms, including:
- incidental activity – such as mowing the lawn, cleaning the house or walking to the bus stop
- exercise – structured or planned physical activity, such as going to the gym, a swim or a jog each day
- sport – such as playing rugby, netball or tennis
- muscle strengthening activity – such as weight training or body weight exercises.
You can be physically active at different intensities, including:
- light – where you might not even think about it, such as strolling around the garden, getting dressed or stretching
- moderate – where you are putting in some effort, but it is not strenuous, such as bike riding or going for a brisk walk
- vigorous – where you are out of breath and sweating, such as jogging, star jumping or doing sit ups.
Physical activity can have instant, lasting health benefits. Whatever your age, you should be active most days, preferably every day. Being active is important for good health and wellbeing at any age. Everyone should be active most days, preferably every day.
Moving more and sitting less helps:
- improve physical and mental health
- improve quality of life
- increase energy
- reduce the risk of many health conditions
- reduce the risk of overweight and obesity
- maintain or improve blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
There are plenty of ways to get active in Cloncurry - you may like to join the gym, participate in PCYC fitness classes, head down to the Cloncurry Swimming Pool for lap swimming or for gentle water exercises, check out the Eddie Lee Field for kicking around a ball or running races, use the new walking track along Daintree St out along the highway crossing both the Anabranch and Cloncurry River, the walking track along Railway St, or get up for a 5km walk or run with Cloncurry Park Run - every Saturday morning at 7am at Mary K Park.

Prep
Welcome to Week 2,
- Maths: This week in Math the Preps will be consolidating sharing amounts into groups and subtraction stories. We will then begin exploring data and data collection.
- Science: In science we will explore the position of camping solar panels. The class will also dig up the potatoes that we planted last term and make them into mash with bacon and cheese.
- Religion: In religion Prep will be exploring celebrations and rituals and this week the class will learn about baptism.
- Literacy: The story ``We're going on a bear hunt" will be our literacy focus over the next few weeks. This week the class will identify, draw and write the different places that the people went through on their bear hunt. Later they will create their own story map with made up places that the people go through on their "hunt."
Also this term we will be doing literacy rotations at 9.10/15am on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and after assembly Friday. Ideally, I would love two parent helpers each day. Please let me know if you are able to help! Literacy groups will only be running for another 8 weeks! Let’s utilise this time as well as we can!
Next Friday, after assembly (instead of literacy rotations) we hope to cook mash with the potatoes we planted last term. Any helpers appreciated as the Preps will be using knives and peelers.
Swimming will begin on Wednesday. Please drop your child’s school bag, lunch and brain break at school so that the Preps only have to carry a swimming bag back to school. The room will be unlocked from 8.05am.
Your child is to be dropped at the pool dressed in their swimmers, a sun safe shirt and with sunscreen on at 8.20am. They will change into their school uniform, shoes and socks and a hat before walking back to school.
Homework and readers did not get sent home last week. We will send them this week.
Reminders:
- Wednesday: Swimming and order tuckshop. Prep bags and lunches to be brought to school and then the students are to be taken to the pool at 8.20am, dressed in their swimmers and with a bag containing their towel, hat, uniform and shoes.
- Thursday: Library and tuckshop.
- Friday: Assembly and potato cooking

Year 3
Welcome to week 2 - another busy week ahead in the Year 3 classroom.
Here are the focus areas for our term 4 curriculum;
English - poetic devices - learning how language features are used for different effects. Language features are literary devices or techniques used to improve the effectiveness of our writing, making it more interesting and memorable. Our students are enjoying writing poetry. I have been very impressed with their efforts so far.
Maths - we continue to use metric units for length, mass and capacity. We will try to understand why we use formal and informal units for measuring.

We hope you have a lovely week.
Mrs Deb McCann and our hardworking Year 3 students.
Year 4
Hi Everyone,
Excitement is in the air for the Rock Pop performance this Friday night. Good luck to all students performing. In Year 4 we have 10 out of our 18 students involved which is a great effort and I’m sure all their hard work will pay off!
HaSS- This week our eight students who weren’t involved in Rock Pop investigated the climate, vegetation and animals which live in 3 different climate zones of Africa. On Wednesday they will teach the class all about their findings.
Maths- Our unit on fractions has been successful with all students understanding this concept in more depth. Next we are moving on to mapping. Students will use simple scales, legends and directions to interpret information contained in basic maps. This will tie in nicely with our HaSS unit where we mapped the countries and oceans of Africa.
English: The sentences that we have practised this week are the -ed start sentence and the very short sentence. Throughout the school we are using a program called ‘The Writers Toolbox’ which allows students to learn about and practice skills for effective writing. I then set a writing task for students to practise the types of sentences learnt. By the end of this unit they should have in their repertoire a variety of types of sentences which they can use effectively and punctuate correctly.
Don’t forget that swimming starts this Wednesday.
Have a wonderful week!
Mrs Lesley Wall
Year 5
Hi everyone,
A few short weeks to go until camp - please remember that we need the permissions and medical information forms returned by Thursday this week. Thanks.
English: This week, we have been investigating sentence types within Writer’s Toolbox, which will improve writing. This is an area that all learners can continue to have growth in. We have been practising the adverb start and red, white and blue sentences. I am impressed with the effort shown to improve their writing. Thankfully, these two sentence types incorporate the use of commas and allow the children to be creative and silly too.
This can be practised at home (see examples below), but these can be spoken sentences around the dinner table - Carefully, Mac passed the potatoes to his dad.
ADVERB START: Meanwhile, the children decided to investigate their local area. (Often adverbs end with -ly - Quickly, Intelligently, Softly, Quietly etc.)
RED, WHITE, AND BLUE.: He leaped through a portal to the mortal's realm, to capture more children, squish them, and stuff them into a rusty, old, bird cage.
Maths:
In Maths, we have continued our investigation into DATA - looking at the weather on the BOM and comparing data for Cloncurry and Paluma. We have used Google Sheets to input data and use the graphing tool to create column graphs and line graphs. We will be looking at digital surveys and may ask for families to complete a quick survey for us soon.
Science:
In Science, we have continued to inquire into adaptations and have learnt that there are three types of adaptation - anatomical, behavioural and physiological (although we’re still getting used to pronunciation of this word!) We are exploring the animals which have adapted to their environments focusing on the three types of adaptation.
Religion:
We have begun to investigate the Rosary and Hail Mary this week, while continuing our work on Luke’s Gospel, with freeze frames and recounting the story.
Key Dates:
- Camp information - deadline Thursday please.
- School Camp: Monday 31st October - Friday 4th November
- Swimming/PE Lesson: Tuesdays (starting Week 2)
- Socktober - Please donate plastic bags, old rags and old socks - Mr T happy to accept them
Have a great week,
Mr Mike Tarelton
Year 6
Welcome to Week 2!
This week’s learning focuses:
Religion: This week, we will be using music and artwork to explore the symbols and meaning of the Eucharist for believers, including making a connection to the story of salvation.
English: We will continue reading our mentor text, Fireborn, and use a range of comprehension strategies to develop a deeper understanding of the novel. The students will be writing a practise fantasy narrative that will inform further teaching opportunities.
Maths: The students will finalise their learning of FDP (fractions, decimals & percentage) and revise how to calculate percentage discounts before moving onto units of measurement related to volume and capacity.
HaSS: This week, we will be finalising our informative text on federation before diving into Australia’s system of government.
Our PE day has changed to every Tuesday for this term. This will be for water safety and familiarisation lessons. Library is still on Wednesdays.
Keep an eye out for any homework that comes home with students. Encourage them to bring their diary back into class and sign their entries.
Have a blessed week!
Mr. James Delaney and the Year 6 Legends!
UMY Spotlight
Year 9 - Design with Mr Kelley
The workshop is a very busy place this term with students continuing to work on their woodwork project– outdoor furniture. Students have started work with enthusiasm and a can-do attitude. They have created designs on paper and are now in the process of bringing them to life.
Students will need to show resilience, sound time management skills and use methodical thinking practices to ensure they complete the project in the allotted time. Design (woodwork) gives students an opportunity to develop/refine skills outside of the classroom. Some of the skills developed/refined in the workshop are; project management skills, time management, planning with the end goal in mind, adjusting plans where applicable (problem solving), collaboration, being proactive, working with autonomy, communication skills and analytics just to name a few.
Year 8 - Religion with Mrs Delaney-Lovett
The students have started the term exploring ‘through word and action’. They are examining the preaching, challenges and achievements of the earliest followers of Jesus, according to The book of Acts. Students are making observations of how the work of Jesus is continued in our contemporary society, through the words and actions of believers, in times of challenge or change. They will organise the evidence in the Acts of the Apostles and explain some significance of key events, people and groups from the early Church.
Year 8 - English with Mrs Delaney-Lovett
This term students will work on responsive texts, using the 2000 film ‘Remember the Titans’ as the foundation for their unit of work. Students will develop their discussion skills - comparing and contrasting events, themes, challenges and successes explored in the movie with their contemporary world. Although it is early days of this unit of work, already the students are engaging in really deep conversations about the issues highlighted by the film. It is such a positive reflection of their values and understanding of fair treatment in the world around them too - so I truly look forward to seeing how this term unfolds and listening to the discussions and responses they share!
Library News

Student Wellbeing
Blended or stepfamilies, come in all shapes and sizes. Today, the term “blended family” is more commonly used as opposed to “stepfamily”. Although their original meanings differ slightly, today both terms are used interchangeably. This is mostly due to some of the negative connotations associated with fairytale characters such as the evil stepmother or stepsister.
The blended family is the fastest growing family dynamic in the world with one in five families now being a ‘step’ or ‘blended’ family. However, when families “blend,” it rarely progresses smoothly. Some children resist change, and parents become frustrated when the new family doesn’t function in the same way as the previous one.
For many step-parent’s, the greatest challenge lies in determining what their role is within the family. The process can be both rewarding and challenging. Children affected by the union of a new couple may not be excited at the prospect of becoming part of a new family.
Although blending families requires adjustment and patience from everyone involved, in this edition of SchoolTV, parents will be given some guidelines of real expectations that can help their new family work through the growing pains.

Socktober
In Week 5 we will celebrate a Catholic Mission Liturgy on Friday 4th November, followed by a Socktober shootout competition. This day will be a “Gold Coin Free Dress Day”. More information will be provided closer to the event.
Save the Date - Awards Night & Christmas Concert
We will be trialing a new way to acknowledge the achievement of our students and celebrate christmas this year. We have booked the Cloncurry Shire Council for this evening. We hope that this change will make the end of year mass a little bit shorter - due to our school numbers growing we can no longer fit in the Church for this celebration and it is quite hot under the shed.
