Principal News
Welcome to Week 10,
It is amazing how quickly the school term has flown by. We have had a very busy term packed with great activities for us to enjoy with one another. We began the term with a busy first week back, our students in years 7 to 9 were away on school camp in Brisbane and the remainder of the school joined with The Cloncurry State School to celebrate NAIDOC. The busyness of the term continued as we had a number of visitors throughout the term including QLD Ballet, QMEA, Tonyi the Worm, AFL QLD, Opera QLD, The Melbourne Cup and representatives from Victorian Racing Club, and we had a visit from Alex Ferlazzo Winter Olympian. A number of events also occurred this term including our famous school fete, Mulkadee, 100 Days of Prep, Catholic Education Week, Staff Appreciation Day, Mary MacKillop Feast Day, Learning Breakfast, Book Week Parade, Fathers Day Breakfast, Child Protection Week, Catholic Soccer Cup, Prep Interviews and R U Ok? Day.
Year 5 Camp:
On Monday afternoon Mr Tarleton and myself hosted a year 5 camp information evening at 4pm. Thank you to the families that joined us for this evening. Our year 5 students will be going on camp in Week 5 of Term 4 to Paluma. If you weren’t present in the meeting please note that forms will go home today and must be handed back in by Thursday of Week 2, Term 4. If you would like to come along and volunteer your time on the camp please get in contact with Mr Tarleton or myself as soon as possible. I have copied a link below to the Gumburu website for more information on where the students are going: https://www.gumburu.tsv.catholic.edu.au/
Board Meeting:
Tonight our board will be meeting at 5.30pm in the library which is our last board meeting for the term. Our board will receive a presentation from Mr Dean Kelley on our writing data at St Joseph’s and a new program being Writers Toolbox that we have implemented this term. This is a similar presentation to what was presented to our P&F earlier in the term. We will also be going over our enrolment guidelines and procedure, which will be ready for you to view in Term 4.
Farewell Assembly:
We will end our school day on Thursday with a farewell assembly in the MMS at 2.20pm. Parents and carers are welcome to join us for this assembly. Students will be dismissed from the shed following the assembly.
Please note that there is no school this coming Friday and Term 4 commences on Tuesday 4th October – (Monday 3rd October being a public holiday).
I hope you have a safe and joyful holiday period.
God Bless,
Mrs Samantha Kelley

APRE News
Welcome to Week 10!
Another term has come to an end. The year seems to be quickly disappearing. I know the students and staff are looking forward to the holidays so they can recharge their batteries and come back refreshed for the final term for 2022. The last term brings so many interesting and educational activities for the parents, staff and students, with Rock Pop, Swimming carnival, Founders Day Fun Run, Year 5 camp, Move Up Morning, Christmas Concert, Year 9 Graduation and End of Year Mass. I wish all parents, students and staff a relaxing and healthy two weeks of school holidays.
Socktober
Yesterday in our Call to Action Assembly we introduced the students to Catholic Mission’s 2022 initiative, to provide life changing opportunities to the people of Ethiopia. We discussed how we can raise funds to support the children and their families of Ethiopia. One way we will do this is through Socktober. We watched a video on how the children from underprivileged countries around the world make a soccer ball from recycled materials. We discussed making these balls and having a socktober ball shoot out in Week 3 next term. More information will be provided early Term 4. However, if your child comes home wanting to make a scotober soccer ball please refer to the catholic mission website https://www.catholicmission.org.au/ for more information and instructions .
END OF TERM PRAYER
We thank you Lord, for this term.
For the challenges, the successes,
and the mistakes from which we have learnt.
Be with us as we spend our time with family and friends.
Give us strength and courage to do what is right;
to be witnesses of our faith.
Help us to be a practical Christian these holidays,
to appreciate what others do for us,
to give time and effort to help others,
to be peacemakers in our family.
Keep us safe in our activities;
give us good rest and good fun.
Bring us back refreshed and ready for a new term.
We thank you for our classmates, teachers, parents, and carers
and a community that cares for us.
May we always be conscious of you in our lives.
Amen

Welcome to the last week of Term 3!
Maths: We are continuing our learning about 24-hour time - developing an understanding for the hours after 12 noon. We will be investigating timestables and conclude with time durations. We have also continued to raise expectations in regard to improving knowledge of multiplication facts.
English: Creatively, we have been investigating adverb sentences - these are sentences which start with an adverb. We firstly needed to remind students about adverbs before work continued with the sentences. Asking the students to practice saying a sentence first before writing. Carefully, we selected starting adverbs which students can practice with - Incredibly,... Loudly,... Quickly,... Sadly,... Quietly,... Enthusiastically,... Carefully,... and Slowly,...
RUOK?: For RU OK? Day we started work about positive experiences with friendships - focusing on what good friendships look like, sound like and feel like. Our HaSS will continue next term in preparation for our School Camp in Week 5.
PE: Monday
Library: Wednesday
Homework: Homework is handed out on Monday and is to be returned on Thursday this week. Homework is a chance to revise concepts taught in class. Well done to our Year 5 students, who have been consistently completing their homework - nearly all students completed homework in Week 9 - fabulous!
Y5 Paluma Camp - please be advised that Camp information from Monday’s meeting will be shared soon while paperwork regarding Consent, Medical and Dietary (distributed Tuesday) must be returned by Thursday 13th October (Week 2). The Y5 Camp will be Week 5 next term (Week Beginning 31st October) and we have already started our discussions in preparation for this amazing experience.
Have a great week and enjoy the break. See you again in Term 4.

Recap on Technology with Mrs Laffey
Prep
Students this term looked at the needs of living things (air, water and food) and the design features of animal enclosures. Students made improvements to chicken coup design plans, paying close attention to how many chickens would be in a coup to position food, water, shade and nesting boxes. They then designed their own map of an enclosure and collaged resources to create their plan.
Year 1- 2
Building on their understanding of living things needs, students got to design and create a grasshead. Our focus was on the design process and students had to list their success criteria before coming up with a plan. Students began to annotate their plans to indicate materials and details of the design. It was hard for our students to stick to their design plans, as we all know they love to be spontaneous, however completing the plan is important so we can learn how to reflect on our final product. All our grassheads should be home today, so if not, remind your student to collect it from school.
Year 3-4
Our focus this term was climate and sustainability. Students needed to design and create a sustainable plant gift. Students selected appropriate plants for the recipient of their gift based on how well they generally look after plants. They then chose colours and designs to suit that person's taste in colour etc. Our students seemed to really enjoy upcycling the old plastic pots into colourful gifts, they discovered hydro dipping was a method that needs little skills compared to its great pay-off! Students also had to consider how modern farming technologies (everything from lights and tractors to vertical greenhouses) allow us to meet the growing food demand of our earth.
Year 5-6
This term students looked at home made organic fertiliser and how it benefits the soil not just today, but into the future. This is both because it helps return nutrients to the soil at no cost, but also reduces landfill. We attempted the use of compost bins and a worm farm in our school with little success, but were more successful in the design and construction of worm towers. Ask your student to take you to find our worm towers - they are very pretty features that are now helping improve our soil for future gardening use! Now they have the knowledge, perhaps they can help make a worm tower for use at home.
Year 7 English & Religion with Mrs Delaney-Lovett
English: This term the students explored non-fiction, informative texts. In detail, they determined the way language, structure and features can influence the complexity of a text. After analysing a range of informative texts, the year 7 class began constructing a text of their own - in the form of a game. It has been a really enjoyable process watching the learners bring their ideas to life in such a creative way. The students will analyse and evaluate their game and the games of others at the end of the term when we join in on an expo!
Religion: In religion the year 7 class have engaged in a prayer and meditation unit, exploring a variety of prayer styles. Through these experiences, students determine the way they feel is most effective to connect with God personally. They have examined the purpose of communal and traditional prayer in the Catholic Church and how this unites people of faith across the world.
Year 7 also explored Christian communities, past and present. Through this, they determined the way the early Church came together through the work of St Peter, St Paul and Emperor Constantine. We examined change and continuity in the Church over time.
Library News
Well we are not far from finishing Term 3 what an action packed term we have had.
I would like to thank everyone for helping the children participate in The Book Week Costume dress-up that we had a few weeks ago. The children enjoyed it immensely.
Next term I am preparing a Book Challenge for any child who would like to participate. It is simple. But there will be a few rules to abide by.
Please see the attached information sheet and I will have the entry forms in the library for students to collect at the start of Term 4.
Please remember, that this is a school challenge so the books will need to be borrowed from our school library.
I hope this will bring enjoyment for our children and encourage them to read more.
Happy Holidays

Teacher/Librarian.
Student Wellbeing
Raising girls in today’s modern world can be a difficult path for parents and carers to navigate. These days, girls are transitioning to puberty a lot earlier than they used to and the physical, psychological and emotional changes they experience are challenging. As a result, by mid-adolescence, girls are twice as likely to develop mood disorders more so than boys.
Some parents and carers may feel uncertain about how best to support their daughter through the ups and downs of adolescence and how to keep the lines of communication open. With the rise of social media and technology, mental health difficulties in girls are increasing as often they are faced with online images that make it difficult to see themselves as acceptable. Ensuring a daughter’s opinions are heard and her views listened to, will go a long way towards making her feel loved and supported as she tries to establish her own identity.
In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers will attain a clearer picture of what girls are wanting from their adult carers and how best to support them through adolescence.
