Principal News
Welcome to Term 3,
I hope that you have all had a refreshing break with your loved ones and are ready to tackle a very busy term!
An email was sent to all parents and family members on Sunday the 11th of July outlining important details about upcoming events, pupil free days, COVID, new Child Protection Legislation and Census Information. Please jump onto your emails to read this. If you are an enrolling parent and/or caregiver and are not receiving emails from the school please phone or email our front office so we can update your details. I have included some information from the email below in case you missed it:
Pupil Free Days:
There are two pupil free days this term that I wanted to bring your attention to:
Friday 6th of August (Census Day & Beginning of Mary Muster).
Friday 3rd of September (Teacher PD Day).
COVID:
As many of you are aware, many areas of Australia have seen a surge of COVID cases throughout this holiday period, which meant that a number of area's have been listed as a hot spot or area for concern. Subject to any further announcements, the Department of Education (DoE) has indicated it expects schools will resume for Term 3 under similar conditions to the end of last term. The only expected change is with regard to wearing of masks by parents and staff who cannot socially distance themselves from other adults.
All parents and family members that have been in an impacted LGA (Local Government Area) in the last 14 days will need to carry a mask with them when inside the school grounds. This will need to be worn when in areas that social distancing is not possible, including outdoor areas. This is a requirement unless 14 days have passed since you were last in the area: South East Queensland from 1am 29 June 2021; or Townsville City (including Magnetic Island and Palm Island) from 6pm 29 June 2021.
Please refrain from visiting school if you are unwell. Queensland Health Time Out directives apply as normal for any student illness. Help us to remain a healthy school community by continuing to follow these protocols, and thank you in advance for encouraging thorough hand washing routines at home and at school, and for collecting your children from school promptly if they are unwell. Parents are required to check in via the Office when visiting the school. Please practice physical distancing measures in our gathering spaces when dropping off and picking up your children.
If further restrictions arise this term we will notify parents as soon as possible. I wanted to thank you in advance for your cooperation with this. Restrictions can make the planning of events quite challenging but our main priority is the safety of our schooling community.
Child Protection:
Child Protection is everyone's responsibility and with new laws being passed I ask that you please familiarize yourselves with them.
St Joseph's is a safe school that promotes an environment for students to not only feel safe but to speak out if they are not safe or do not feel safe. The safety of children is the responsibility of all of us as a schooling community and The Townsville Catholic Education Office would like to advise parents that a new law has been introduced as of the 5th of July 2021. This law has been implemented to strengthen and improve the protection of children from offenses of sexual nature. This law applies to everyone that is over the age of 18 outlining that it is an offence for any adult not to report sexual offending against a child by another adult to the police. Please read the information sheet that was emailed to you. If you do not have access to your emails drop into the school and we can print this out for you to read.
Assembly:
There will not be an assembly this week due to the Athletics Carnival and NAIDOC march. We look forward to seeing you all at the Athletics Carnival and welcoming you back to Term 3 on Friday.
Athletics Carnival P&F Canteen:
Our wonderful P&F Committee will be running a snacks & coffee canteen at the Athletics Carnival for Parents and Family members. Students cannot access this and will need to see Mr Murray’s communication about bringing their own lunch and drinks for the day. We hope you can join us.
NAIDOC March:
This Thursday the 15th of July the staff and students at St Joseph’s will be gathering with the Cloncurry State School community for the annual NAIDOC March. We will be beginning our march at 9am so we won't be able to hold our assembly on Thursday morning. Students will need to bring a hat and water bottle with them for the day. We will be finishing the march at The State School with a sausage sizzle.
God Bless,
Samantha Kelley
APRE News
Welcome to Term 3
Yesterday we gathered in the church for a Welcome to Term 3 Liturgy where we thanked God as a school community for the holidays and we asked him for blessings this term.
We had various students in the procession as well as the readings. Our first reading was from the letter to the Romans about contributing to the needs of the saints and extending hospitality to strangers. We then sung Psalm 27, The Lord is my Light, as our Responsorial Psalm before hearing from the Gospel according to Matthew about doing acts for others. I’ve included the reflection we shared yesterday:
“The things we are asked to do are so simple: give food and drink to ‘Jesus’ in those who are hungry and thirsty; to clothe ‘Jesus’ in those who are unclothed; to visit ‘Jesus’ in those who are sick and need help. Whether we realise it or not, every time we spontaneously take care of a brother or sister in need it is Jesus himself we are serving.
An important point to remember is ‘You did it to me, not for me’. Jesus identifies himself especially with the person in need. Every time we neglect to help a brother or sister in need, we neglect Jesus himself. Let us not forget to reach out to others as we are asked to.
Where are the hungry, the unclothed, the homeless who would call on me if they could reach me? Or have we so organised my life that the needy never impinge on us?
Only the Spirit of Jesus will help us to see what Jesus says, to recognise how, in our life, we embody the actions that express Jesus’ attitudes.
I pray that the Holy Spirit guide us to recognise the good that God is doing in life and that we not fall prey to any poor spirit that makes us gloomy or judgemental.”
Gospel Reading - Mark 6:30-34
Jesus invites his disciples to rest after their ministry, and Jesus is moved with pity for the crowds who pursue them.
Family demands can make us feel like Jesus and the twelve apostles. We wish for times of relaxation and renewal, but there are errands to do, household chores to keep up with, volunteer commitments to keep. These are all good things, but we can be left feeling drained and tired as we try to keep up. Perhaps we might take the opportunity this week to give ourselves permission to find the rest and relaxation that Jesus seeks for his disciples in today’s Gospel. One of the gifts we can give to one another in our family life is assistance in finding the time and space to renew ourselves through prayer.
When you gather together as a family this week, bring your family calendar. Together review your family calendar and spend some time reflecting on your family activities. In particular, ask if your family has an appropriate amount of time for rest and relaxation. If not, discuss ways in which this time for renewal might be included in the week ahead. Read together today’s Gospel, Mark 6:30-34. Notice how Jesus tried to find time and space for his disciples to rest and relax after they returned from their mission. Conclude in prayer together, asking God to help us find time to renew ourselves so that we might be better disciples of Jesus. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.
Mulkadee
Next week is Mulkadee week. Miss Lovett and some of our students will be travelling to Townsville to participate in Mulkadee.
After the enormous success of Alice in Wonderland in 2018 and Peter Pan in 2019, Mulkadee will pick up where we left off in 2020 and, once again, be performing a new take on a beloved children’s story. Mulkadee Youth Arts Festival through Townsville Catholic Education proudly presents: The Wizard of Oz.
Townsville Catholic Education Office will operate Mulkadee in accordance with the current COVID 19 guidelines.

Building Resilience in our Children
Resilience refers to the ability to successfully manage life, and adapt to change and stressful events in healthy and constructive ways. It is about the capacity to bounce back from positive and negative life experiences. To develop emotional and psychological buoyancy in childhood gives our kids a better prospect of being able to thrive as adults. Building resilience is a vital ingredient in our parenting. It is a process that directs our interactions with our children as we strengthen their ability to meet life’s challenges and pressures with confidence and perseverance. This model can help build healthy self-esteem and strengthen their resilience. These building blocks show the different areas that a parent, school or community can focus on in order to build resilience for life. (M. Dent, 2021 https://www.maggiedent.com/).
Prep
Welcome back for Term 3,
I hope you had a restful break from the school routine. There will be no literacy groups this week. We will focus on revising the learning from last term. These will resume again in Week 2.
Home readers will be sent home on Thursday this week, due to the athletics carnival being on Friday. Please bring these back the following Friday.
- In Science this term we will be exploring the weather/environment and how it affects us.
- For HASS the Preps will be identifying features in their environment and using these to create map models and drawings.
- During Math we will be measuring and comparing length and height using non standard
measures such as paddle pop sticks. The Preps will also explore mass and volume. They will also
collect data which will be used to inform decisions. This will involve being exposed to simple
graphing for organising data.
- In religion the class will look at bible stories which show us how prayer is used to inform us how
to live as God would like us to live, as well as how prayer can enrich our relationship with God.
During this the preps will identify and participate in different types of prayer.
- We will be focusing on independent writing in english. Please encourage your child to "have a
go" at spelling words phonetically (how they sound). It is fine for the word to not be correct. They
are at the exploring stage of writing. This is an important stage in developing confidence to
attempt words. Praise your child for their attempts at writing, explain that they are only beginning
to learn to write and that it is fine to not know how to write many words yet. If you want to correct
their spelling and explain things such as "y" sometimes sounds like an 'e" at the end of a word;
for example "happy" that is okay, but please don't make a big deal about it.
As we have a bush dance later this term the students will explore the elements of dance while also learning our dance.
Just a reminder about sourcing playdough utensils/plastic animals etc to make playdough and utensil packs and for our fete stall.
Regards,
Sharon

HASS this term will be focussed around identifying and describing the features of places, specifically in and around Cloncurry. In science we are learning to describe objects and events that we encounter in our everyday lives, and the effects of interacting with materials and objects. In religion we are learning about the nature of Jesus’ mission and ministry and aspects of Jewish daily life at the time of Jesus. Media Arts will allow Year 1 to explore ideas, characters and settings in the community through stories in images, sounds and text. We are also learning to recognise how strengths and achievements contribute to identities in Health.

Year 4
Welcome back to Term 3! I get really excited about Term 3 as the units we complete this term are full of action and we get to spend more time outdoors in the beautiful weather we have at this time of the year. Here are some things to look forward to-:
Science- This term we are studying Earth Science and will be going on a couple of excursions to help us to get hands-on experiences. Look out for a permission note that will come home very soon regarding a trip to the river to collect soil samples.
Design Technology/HaSS- Our HaSS unit this term is about sustainability and how our actions have repercussions for the environment. Closely tied into this topic, our Design unit involves repurposing materials to construct a recycled object that serves a purpose. This week we will look at ideas, then the students will be required to bring in the materials to make their object. I will send a list home of things the students need once they have decided on their project.
English- Our English unit is titled ‘The Power of Persuasion’. During this unit we will be looking at how advertising can target a particular audience and how images and text can be used to persuade. If you have any cereal boxes it would help us greatly in this unit, as the students will be analysing the packaging of a cereal product, then developing their own.
Regards,
Mrs Wall
