Principal News
Welcome to Week 4,
Staff Appreciation Day:
This Friday we will be celebrating Staff Appreciation Day. In previous years we have celebrated this separately with World Teachers Day, School Officer Appreciation Day, Administration Day, however, it is important that we celebrate our incredible contribution to St Joseph's and the lives of our students together. This Friday our staff will be able to enjoy some goodies and will have surprises throughout the day. We do however encourage our students to begin writing letters or drawing pictures to thank our staff for their amazing work. Please join us on Friday in thanking our wonderful staff as you drop your child / children off at school.
Merry Muster Float:
This Friday our students are invited to join us for our Merry Muster Float on Station Street at 5.00pm. Students will also need to be collected from the same location at the conclusion of the fete.
Opera QLD:
Following the fete we have students performing a new Cloncurry Town Song in the rodeo arena. Please come along to support both our students and the students at Cloncurry State School who have worked hard to put this song together. A big thank you to Opera QLD for traveling to Cloncurry to do this with our students.
Feedback:
As a Principal I always encourage feedback from our students, staff, parents and local community on areas that we can improve. It is in partnership that we can provide the best possible school for our students. A great way to be connected with our school is to join in on our P&F meetings. We have one coming up on Monday 15th of August and would love to see some new faces there.
Monday 8th August 2021 - Mary MacKillop Feast Day
We have a very busy but exciting start to the week next week as we celebrate Mary MacKillop Feast Day, The first Holy Communion of some of our students and staff and Sr Lyn's 20th Anniversary in Cloncurry. Please come along and join us for this celebration.
On Monday our rotations will begin at 11.20am after students have their morning tea. We will end the day with a Mass in the Mary MacKillop Shed followed by cake.
Please note due to the busy end to the week with the Merry Muster Float and Staff Appreciation Day, as well as Mary MacKillop Feast Day on Monday there will be no assembly this coming Friday.
God Bless,
Samantha Kelley

APRE News
Welcome to Week 4!
On the 8th of August (Monday next week) we will celebrate the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, the first Australian saint, and our patron Saint who granted our Cloncurry community a catholic education. We have such a strong connection to Mary, and it is important that as a school we recognise this with a celebration. Classes will participate in activities in the middle session of the day followed by a Mass at 1:30 pm. We encourage our school community to join us for this special mass.
At this Mass we will also take the time to celebrate Sr Lyn’s 20 years of service to our Cloncurry community. We thought it very fitting to tie in Sr Lyn’s celebration with St Mary MacKillop’s Feast Day. As Sr Lyn is a Josephite (the order of sister founded by Mary Mackillop), and still today she continues to serve our community some 113 years on from the arrival of our first Josephite sisters.
It was in January 2002, 20 years ago that our community was blessed with the presents of Sr Lyn Freestone. Sr Lyn moved to us from Mount Isa and began teaching music and science. And still today Sr Lyn teaches music. On Monday we will acknowledge and say thank you to the tremendous support she has bestowed upon our community.
At the mass we will also celebrate the First Communion for our sacramental candidates: Michael Curley, Sydney Chaplain, Noah O’Brien, Archie McDonald, Carly Pattison, Dean Kelley, Scott Murray, Emma Young, Rachel Delaney-Lovett, Zach Kollman
Mary MacKillop had a great devotion to the Eucharist and what a memorable occasion for our candidates to share their first time on her Feast Day.
Love was the soul of Mary’s virtues, always ready to make allowances and to endure whatever comes. Her faith enabled her to look beyond what she could see and hear and smell, and to respect all as God children. She is an extraordinary role model, and we are so blessed to have such a close connection still today with the Josephite sisters, as they continue to carry on the mission of our beloved Mary of the Cross - thank you Sr Lyn for continuing that legacy here in Cloncurry.
Regards,
Mrs Therese Curley

Prep
I hope you had a good weekend.
Thank you for all the effort that went into our 100 days smarter dress up theme. I must say, it was lovely to be in my dressing gown all day! Make sure you check out our photos in the Prep album on Facebook.
On Monday and Tuesday I will be out of the classroom. During this time I will be administering the Early Years testing with each child individually. This will be the same test that was administered in Term 1 and will show each student's growth and also highlight areas that may need work.
I will also be away on Friday and Mrs Chaplian who is the library teacher will be in prep.
This week in maths the class will continue consolidating teen numbers (especially how to write these) and numbers beyond 20.
Our HASS assessment task will be done over the next few weeks. Each child has drawn a map of the courtyard. They will then mark their map with an X and hide their partner's treasure chest in the spot marked. Their partner will read the map to find the treasure.
I have made a "Rainbow writing area" with lots of different, fun things to write with. Each child has their own booklet which is only to be used for writing of any kind. This is to encourage the Preps to "have a go" at writing and to also have fun with writing. We are encouraging any attempt at spelling words phonetically (how they sound) and reinforcing that we are only learning to write, so it's okay for things to be spelt with the sounds they hear.
Reminders:
- Monday - Early Years Testing
- Tuesday - Sport and Early Years Testing
- Wednesday - order tuckshop online
- Thursday - Library and tuckshop
- Friday - Mrs Chaplain will be teaching Prep as I will be away.
Yours in fun and learning,
Miss Tamara Williams and Mrs Sharon McLauchlan

Hi Everyone,
This week we welcome Erin Hayley to our classroom. Erin is a 3rd Year pre-service teacher who will be observing the classroom routines and curriculum in Year 4, assisting with small group work and eventually teaching some lessons to our students. It will be great to have another helping hand in our room.
HaSS- This week the students are researching the positive actions that are taking place across the world to ensure sustainability. I’m sure the students will find out some really interesting details that they will be happy to share with their families.
Maths- Yesterday we began our unit on money and will be solving purchasing problems. Students will be counting collections of money and calculating change by counting on. Of course students will be involved in real-life situations of shopping and playing purchasing games.
Please send in- don’t forget to send in any cereal boxes and wrapped lollies and lollipops for our Fete stall.
I look forward to seeing our students in their jeans, white shirts and cowboy hats for the Merry Muster Street Parade this Friday at 5pm!
Have a great week!

English: This week, we will be learning about some speech techniques to ensure persuasiveness. The students have begun using Writer’s Toolbox which will be a regular part of our literacy rotations and writing process for the remainder of the year. It will be used to introduce informative writing very shortly.

UMY Spotlight
Yr 8 Science with Mrs Laffey
This term we are looking at Biology - specifically how bodies are made up of organs and organ systems. Different animals have different organs/systems. We learn how those organs are made up of tissue, and tissues have cells. And cells have organelles. Different cells have different organelles, just like different animals have different organs.
So the students are going to be overwhelmed with the number of names for all of these things they are learning. We will play games and activities to help students get the right names for the right parts; but the more they talk about them, the better they will remember. Check in with your students and ask them which parts of the body they are learning about - or most interested in. Start with ‘the body’ and just keep asking ‘and what is inside that one? And what does IT do’. Think of it as making up for the never ending ‘why?’ when they were toddlers.
Yr 9 Science with Mrs Schneekloth
We are exploring Earth Science this term - students will look at the theory of plate tectonics and how it explains global patterns of geological activity such as volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis and continental movement.
For the assessment, students will produce a research report.
Yr 8 Maths with Mr Kelley
This term students are working on patterns & algebra as well as linear relationships. They solve problems involving the use of percentages, including percentage increases and decreases, with and without digital technologies (calculators).
Algebra is a concept based study in which students understand the relationship between numbers and expressions.
In conjunction with our study of linear relationships, students shape their understanding of the real world. They use problem solving methods and consequently students can make informed predictions based on previous information.
AFL Program
Over the next six (6) weeks, AFL will be coming in for a Half Day program with our school, working in conjunction with the State School.
This will see the Game Development Officer (GDO) for AFL coming in on Wednesday afternoons and doing three (3) one-hour sessions with classes.
These classes will work with the AFL GDO for two Wednesdays, before another three groups at school start their two week rotation.
This week, years 6, 7, 8 & 9 all start their two-week rotation with the AFL GDO this Wednesday, 3/8/2022, and have their last next Wednesday 11/08/2022.
If it is not your child's PE lesson day, please ensure that they are in Sports Uniform for this.

Sports & Extra Curricular Coordinator
Library & Book Week
Greetings from the Library!
Yes, it is that time again… Book Week.
Book Week is a celebration by the Australian Children’s Book Council of Australia. It celebrates Books and Australian authors and illustrators for a week.
Book week goes from August 20-26 and the theme this year is Dreaming with Eyes open.
This gives us a wide scope of characters we can use to dress up as. I know that some of you parents and carers stress about the dress up bit. Honestly just ask your child as they have lots of ideas and love to have input into designing what they are wanting to dress up as. Pinterest is a great source for some very simple ideas.
We will have our dress up parade on Thursday the 25th August at 8:30 am in the Mary McKillop Shed, following the Learning Breakfast. All are welcome to our breakfast at 7.45am.
We will be doing some activities prior to Book week in the library.
I have sent a lot of our culled books and second copies of books to Townsville for the Hospital Second-hand Book Fair which is held in September. If you are travelling to Townsville before September and you have excess books at home, they would be only too pleased to receive them. I would be happy to put you on the contact for the Fair.
I know it is hard to remember library books, but it is very important that the children bring their books back regularly as other children may what to borrow the book your child has.
Library is either Wednesday or Thursday.
Thank you for your co-operation. Happy Reading
Chris Chaplain
Teacher/Librarian.

Student Wellbeing - Managing Screen Time
MANAGING SCREEN TIME
As a result of the global pandemic, there has been a noticeable shift in the amount of time people spend on screen-based devices. Families are transitioning back to pre-COVID routines but many are still struggling to re-establish the boundaries and rules around screen use. Some continue to deal with digital conflict and tech-tantrums on a daily basis. The latest research found that 77% of teenagers spend more than five hours on screens per day, but it is important to note that not all screen time is considered equal.
Parents play a crucial role in modelling a positive and healthy approach to using screens and assisting children to navigate the content they watch. It is better to model and mentor screen use, rather than monitor it. Children tend to do more of what they see us do, and less of what we tell them to do. However, it is still important to outline the risks and highlight the benefits of screen use to ensure you keep a balanced attitude. Encourage discussions around the issues that people experience in monitoring their screen time and be honest about your own difficulties.
Parents need to remain firm in their approach to managing screen time. Excessive screen time can be detrimental to a child’s overall wellbeing. Ensuring the correct privacy settings are in place is vital to prevent children from being inadvertently exposed to inappropriate content or online predators. Parents need to also be mindful of the potential impact screen time can have on a child’s social, emotional, educational, behavioural, and even physical domains.
In this edition of SchoolTV, care-givers will be provided with a range of guidelines and strategies to help manage screen time at home.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact Toni Schneekloth, Pastoral Care Leader, or Bec Greaves, Guidance Counsellor, for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Student Wellbeing - Physical Exercise
In the last decade, children’s participation in physical activity and exercise has been in decline. In this digital age, children are using computers and mobile devices, not only for learning, but for relaxation and recreation purposes. This sedentary lifestyle is having a detrimental effect on today’s youth. The key is finding the balance.
Research shows that regular physical activity and exercise leads to changes in the brain. It improves cognitive function, elevates mood, enhances learning and improves academic outcomes. Playing sport helps kids develop fundamental movement skills impacting positively on their confidence, self-esteem and ability to develop social skills. Parents play an important role in helping children establish positive habits that will benefit their children in the long-term.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will discover practical advice relating to the benefits of regular physical activity and exercise, as well as tips on how to get their kids motivated and moving more.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Change to COVID-19 Rules
The Queensland Government has announced an update to COVID-19 isolation protocols. The change relates to people who have had COVID-19 and are considered ”cleared cases”.
Previously, cleared cases did not need to isolate or get tested if they re-presented with symptoms in the 12-week period after having contracted COVID-19. In response to updated AHPPC advice that reinfections may occur as early as 28 days after recovery from a previous COVID-19 infection, the Queensland Government has announced that the “cleared case” period will be reduced from 12 weeks to 28 days (4 weeks).
This means that people who were previously infected with COVID-19 will need to get tested and isolate if they re-present with symptoms or return a positive test from four weeks after their initial infection.
A reminder to families - please do not send your student to school if they have any flu-like symptoms. Unfortunately the high risk of infection prevents us from being able to accommodate unwell students in our sick bay. If your child is meant to be wearing a mask as a previous case or as a Close Contact, we appreciate your support in providing these and ensuring they are worn.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school’s front office on 4742 1633.
