Principal News
Welcome to Week 3,
Thank you to the parents, grandparents and family members that joined us for our assembly last Friday. The amount of community members that came along to celebrate the achievements of our students was pleasing to see. One of the goals in our School Renewal Plan is to cultivate “an environment of partnership to promote open communication between all stakeholders”. Our goal is to ensure that the partnership between families and the school is based on mutual trust and respect, and shared responsibility for the education of children and young people at the school. We acknowledge that families are not only the first educators of our students, but educators that continue to influence a child’s learning and development during the school year and long afterwards. Term 3 is a time for students, parents and teachers to reflect on the learning that took place in Semester 1. This term provides a time for students to action the feedback on the Semester 1 report cards and strive to improve their results and engagement in Term 3 or Semester 2. Please ensure that you engage in this process - establish conversations with your children at home and take the opportunity to foster the partnership between yourself and your child’s classroom teacher. If you would like to discuss your child’s report card please contact their classroom teacher to arrange an appointment.
Catholic Education Week:
This week is the beginning of Catholic Education Week. We will come together on Friday morning for our Catholic Education Week Liturgy which Fr Mick will be joining us for. Please join us at 8:30am in the Mary MacKillop Shed and stay behind following the assembly for some cake, tea and coffee.
Catholic Education Week is a time to celebrate the incredible evolution of Catholic Education. At St Joseph’s Catholic School our history is rich. In 1909 Bishop James Duhig and Fr Edward O’Keefe visited St Mary MacKillop in Sydney to request the Sisters of St Joseph’s open a school in Cloncurry. As Mary MacKillop passed away a few months later, St Joseph’s Cloncurry has the distinction of being the last foundation established by St Mary MacKillop. The Josephite Sisters traveled on a slow moving train and arrived in Cloncurry at midnight on 28th October 1909. Till 1913 each Sister took a class either in the Church, bough shed or under the Convent. The school was officially opened in 1913. We are proud to spread the kindness and message of St Mary MacKillop today.
100 Days of Prep:
This Friday we will also be celebrating 100 days of Prep! This is one of my most favourite days. I love seeing the creative costumes as students dress up as if they are 100 years old. We also have Prep performing at our liturgy as well. What a wonderful way to celebrate their day.
Staff Appreciation:
This year we will be changing the way that we thank our staff for their incredible contribution to our community. In previous years we celebrated this individually on World Teachers Day, World School Officer and Administration Day. In 2022 we will be celebrating this together on Friday 5th of August.
We have some amazing surprises organised for our staff, however, we would like to invite our students to start writing and/or drawing messages or appreciation for our staff. Students will be able to give these to teachers on Friday 5th of August.
God Bless you and your families for a great week ahead,

Welcome to week 3 and Happy Catholic Education Week!
A big thank you to all our families who helped us celebrate our Children's Mass on Sunday. It was very well attended, and the student participation was fantastic!
As I mentioned in week 1 Catholic Education Week is an annual state-wide event that promotes the distinctive mission of Catholic schools throughout Queensland. The Catholic Education Week 2022 theme is "Communities of Faith, Hope and Love". This was also our theme for our Beginning of Year Mass.
In our ‘Call to Action Assembly’ we discussed ‘What is the Catholic school difference?’ and more importantly ‘What makes our Catholic school so special?’. It was lovely to hear the students’ responses, most of which were centred around St Mary Mackillop's motto of “never see a need without doing something about it”. It’s very humbling to hear the gratitude and compassion our student show. At St Joseph’s we are blessed to be able to offer an education that fosters those caring and compassionate attributes.
As part of the assembly the students viewed two beautiful books: ‘The Stone Lion’ by Margaret Wild and Ritva Voultila, and ‘Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge’ by Mem Fox. These stories shared a message of Love, Hope and Faith and sparked some beautiful conversations.
Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society. This is certainly something to celebrate.
We invite all members of our school and parish community to our Catholic Education Week liturgy to celebrate together this significant event as a Community of Faith, Hope and Love. We will share in a cake after the assembly.

What a great start to week 3 we have had. All our students arrived with such a positive attitude to their learning - what a fabulous start to the week. Our class dojo points will soon be adding up.
Our learning focus for week 3 is as follows;
- Maths - Revision of place value for 4 digit numbers and expanded notation
- English - Who are we writing for? Who are the audience?
- Religion - Beatitudes - Who was Luke talking to?
- HASS - Climate zones and characteristics of places
- Science - We will walk around the school identifying living and non-living things.
- Our spelling focus is on the ‘ar’ sound - this is always an interesting discussion when your teacher is from the north of England.
Could I ask all parents to check that their children have enough pencils and glue sticks for the rest of the term?
Have a fabulous week .
Mrs Deb McCann

UMY Spotlight
Yr 9 with Mr Kelley
This Semester students will move into the workshop (woodwork) for design. Students will first complete online competencies around safe practices in the workshop. This will be followed by demonstrations of each tool/machine with the focus on safe practices. Students will create outdoor furniture (tables and chairs) from H3 pine (timber for outdoor use).
Yr 8 English & RE with Miss Lovett
English:
This term the students will engage with all things persuasion! We will work together to explore the different forms of persuasion - written, spoken & visual. Students will use these skills and work in teams to gain points for our class ‘Persuasion Cup’. There will be ‘challenges’ throughout the term that require students to use their understanding of persuasive language features, oral presentation skills and vocabulary choices to influence an audience - all to be the ‘top team’ at the end of the term!
Religion:
Students are working through the unit ‘The Prophet’s Message’. In this unit, they will explore the covenants and the relationship between God and God’s people. The students will develop an understanding that a covenant is a unique relationship and is different from a promise. We have identified what a covenant might look like in 2022 and I was SO impressed with their ability to make connections from a Biblical context to a contemporary context. For assessment, students will pose as a Prophet and write a letter to a family member, discussing their chosen covenant with God. They will explain the themes present in this covenant and how they reveal God’s unending love and mercy for humanity.
Yr 9 Media Arts with Mr Murray
This term in Media Arts, students are young directors, making their mark on the Australian Film Industry. Actors and actresses want to work for them... production companies seek themout………..film fans flock to cinemas each and every time you release a film!
Despite their raging success and popularity, they have become disheartened with the audiences’ lack of knowledge when it comes to genre films and production elements. And they are determined to change this!
Over the next 8 weeks, they will work towards the creation of a short film that clearly demonstrates three different genre styles, shot with the exact same storyline. Your film will incorporate the media conventions and production elements which are manipulated to make it clearly evident the change in genres.
Student Wellbeing
Most young people today experience anxiety at some point in their life. Sometimes that slight rush of anxiety that occurs prior to an exam or sporting event, can enhance their performance. However, experiencing too much anxiety, over long periods of time, can be extremely damaging to their health and wellbeing. There is a difference between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ anxiety.
Statistics show that the psychological health of young people today is far worse than it was a generation ago. This is having an adverse affect on children in both primary and secondary levels. Some of their issues of concern include stress, school, study, body image and friendship.
Parents need to be aware of the warning signs of ‘bad’ anxiety. There are preventative measures parents can implement as well as teaching kids the skills to cope more efficiently with their anxiety.

Spark Club
On the weekend I was fortunate to participate in learning about Circle Solutions. For me as School Chaplain, it will help with facilitating group circle time, each circle with a specific topic.
Circle time/Circle solutions is about being able to express and coming together in a positive way. Building people up and listening to what they have to say. Please see the poster below that the Circel Solutions group use with their program.
This week so far, we have had karaoke, letters and games. Tell you what, these kids love the karaoke! Rewards for Week 2 didn't happen, sorry about that kids! So, this week we will have Week 2 and Week 3 recipients meet in the Home Ec Room @ 1.10pm just before second lunch. Our breaky club is going well, this morning we had about 20 spaghetti and cheese toasties walk out the door, anzac slice, banana bread, fruit (mandarins kindly donated by the Kidd family, Thank you!), cereal and hot chocolates! Today the kids were hungry! I loved it! Thanks for coming and sharing your energy with us at Chaplaincy Breakfast!
Have a great week,

Library & Book Week
Greetings from the Library!
Yes, it is that time again… Book Week.
Book Week is a celebration by the Australian Children’s Book Council of Australia. It celebrates Books and Australian authors and illustrators for a week.
Book week goes from August 20-26 and the theme this year is Dreaming with Eyes open.
This gives us a wide scope of characters we can use to dress up as. I know that some of you parents and carers stress about the dress up bit. Honestly just ask your child as they have lots of ideas and love to have input into designing what they are wanting to dress up as. Pinterest is a great source for some very simple ideas.
We will have our dress up parade on Thursday the 25th August at 8:30 am in the Mary McKillop Shed, following the Learning Breakfast. All are welcome to our breakfast at 7.45am.
We will be doing some activities prior to Book week in the library.
I would also like to formally thank Mrs Jill Smith who does a lot of covering of books for our library. It is such a big help! This enables us to get the books on the shelf for borrowing much more quickly. Thank you, Jill!
I have sent a lot of our culled books and second copies of books to Townsville for the Hospital Second-hand Book Fair which is held in September. If you are travelling to Townsville before September and you have excess books at home, they would be only too pleased to receive them. I would be happy to put you on the contact for the Fair.
I know it is hard to remember library books, but it is very important that the children bring their books back regularly as other children may what to borrow the book your child has.
Library is either Wednesday or Thursday.
Thank you for your co-operation. Happy Reading
Chris Chaplain
Teacher/Librarian.
Change to COVID-19 Rules
The Queensland Government has announced an update to COVID-19 isolation protocols. The change relates to people who have had COVID-19 and are considered ”cleared cases”.
Previously, cleared cases did not need to isolate or get tested if they re-presented with symptoms in the 12-week period after having contracted COVID-19. In response to updated AHPPC advice that reinfections may occur as early as 28 days after recovery from a previous COVID-19 infection, the Queensland Government has announced that the “cleared case” period will be reduced from 12 weeks to 28 days (4 weeks).
This means that people who were previously infected with COVID-19 will need to get tested and isolate if they re-present with symptoms or return a positive test from four weeks after their initial infection.
A reminder to families - please do not send your student to school if they have any flu-like symptoms. Unfortunately the high risk of infection prevents us from being able to accommodate unwell students in our sick bay. If your child is meant to be wearing a mask as a previous case or as a Close Contact, we appreciate your support in providing these and ensuring they are worn.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school’s front office on 4742 1633.
