Principal News
Welcome to Week 2,
It is great to have our year 7 to 9 students back from Camp this week. We also had 7 new students join us this term. I pray that your first week went well and you have settled in quickly to our St Joseph’s Community as we are very excited to have you joining us.
Mulkadee:
9 students at St Joseph’s Catholic School have joined Miss Ansell at Mulkadee this week. Kayden, Ruby, Kimberlee, Nika, Breanna, Will, Latarnia, Chloe and Catie will be representing St Joseph’s at this event. Following a Mulkadee workshop for Drama that was held here at St Joseph’s all of our students were then selected to perform in Drama as well, what an amazing achievement. We are very excited to hear about their week and look forward to sharing some photos with you on our facebook page. Pop on over and like our page to follow their journey.
AFL QLD:
Lachlan from AFL QLD will be joining Prep to Year 4 for 30minutes each class tomorrow morning to teach the students some fun and engaging AFL skills. The timetable for these sessions are as follows:
- Year 3 and Year 4: 8.40 - 9.10am
- Year 1: 9.10 - 9.40am
- Year 2: 9.40 - 10.10am
- Prep: 10.10 - 10.40am
Please note that these are in addition to the students PE lesson this week.
Staff Appreciation:
This year we will be changing the way that we thank our staff for their incredible contribution to our community. In previous years we celebrated this individually on World Teachers Day, World School Officer and Administration Day. In 2022 we will be celebrating this together on Friday 5th of August.
We have some amazing surprises organised for our staff, however, we would like to invite our students to start writing and/or drawing messages or appreciation for our staff. Students will be can gift these to staff on Friday 5th of August.
Professional Development:
Our teaching staff come together each Wednesday for a staff meeting. This Wednesday our staff will be receiving their final training session in the LINK’s program. This program is an evidence-based, inclusive education approach to support students with language difficulties/difficulties in schools. It also assists in breaking down the barriers that may be created in our lessons and or assessment items for all students.
The LINK-s program aims to promote ‘language-friendly’ classrooms by coaching teachers in ways to modify oral and written instructional language used in their regular classroom teaching. This is especially important for high schools, as to promote inclusion by reducing the need to remove students from classrooms for intervention, rather building strategies that support their oral and written language into teaching methods.
Thank you to the families and friends that joined us for the NAIDOC liturgy and NAIDOC march last week. It was great to be able to come together as a community.
Learning Breakfast, Book Week Parade and Assembly - Save the Date
We have combined our learning breakfast (7.45am) with our Book Week Parade and Assembly (8.30am) on Thursday 25th of August 2022. We are hoping that the combining of these events will be easier for parents and carers to join us without needing to take several days off work.
God Bless,
Samantha Kelley

Children’s Mass
St Colman’s Church
Sunday 24th July 2022
At 8:30 am
This Sunday we will be joining with St Colman’s parish to host our Children’s Mass. Fr Emene will present the mass, along with our students. The Children’s Mass is all about getting the youth involved. If your child is able to attend, please let me know via email and I’ll make sure they are included. All children and families are welcome to attend, you do not need to be catholic, just a willing participant!
Please join us after the mass for morning tea in the Mary MacKillop Shed. If you would like to make a small contribution to the shared morning tea, that would be very much welcomed and appreciated. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
St Mary Magdalene Feast Day:
Our school leaders will present assembly payer this week. The focus is on St Mary Magdalene’s Feast Day. Magdalene was a close friend and follower of Jesus. She was present at Jesus’ crucifixion and at his burial. She was the first person to see him after the Resurrection. Mary was a constant companion of Jesus. She shows us how to live with hope and faith.

Prep
I hope you had a good first week back.
We will continue to send readers and literacy folders home this week. Please remember to return yours on the day which is written on your folder. The class will be getting a decodable (should have been taught all the sight words in the book and also all the letters used in words that need sounding out) reader and also a non-decodable reader. They may initially be confused about not being able to sound out the words in the non-decodable reader. Remind them to look at the pictures for clues to what is written. The class will be drawing and labeling a "Monster Trap" in response to a book we read last week. They will also be writing a sentence about their holidays.
Literacy groups will begin again this week on Monday to Thursday at about 9:10am. Any helpers are greatly appreciated. If you are able to help on a particular day can you email me so that we can make sure we have enough helpers, but not too many.
In Math we are continuing to explore numbers and amounts to 20 and beyond.
The Preps will be making a treasure chest each this week. This will be used for part of their HASS Assessment task which involves drawing a map of the courtyard, marking where their treasure chest has been placed and having a partner find their treasure.
Last week in Science we investigated the waterproofness of materials. This week we will explore strength.
The potatoes which have been left over from our Potato people last term are ready to plant and the soil has been dug up. We will plant these this week.
Our 100 days of Prep celebrations will be on Friday next week. I would like to make a display of "What 100 looks like". It would be great if you could count a collection of "something" with your child and put it in a ziplock bag for us to add to the display. Some ideas are; nutrigrain, pegs, shells, bottle tops, sequins. Please keep these small and light so that the bags can be sticky taped to our whiteboard.
Reminders:
- Tuesday - Sport
- Wednesday - Order tuckshop
- Thursday - Library and tuckshop
- Friday - Wear house colours
Yours in fun and learning,
Miss Tamara Williams and Mrs Sharon McLauchlan

Week 2 has started well with lots of great work taking place in the Year 3 classroom.
We are working on our writing stamina so that we can complete our work to a much higher standard.
We are also trying to be respectful learners - making positive choices in order to allow all class members to have a positive learning environment.
Here are our focus areas for week 2;
- English - what does an information text tell us?
- Maths - modelling and representing numbers up to 10,000.
- Science - we will take a walk around the school and identify living and non-living things.
Reminder: Please ensure any home readers or library books are returned on time.
I hope you have a wonderful week.

Hi Everyone,
HEALTH- I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful weather! Our veggies are growing well and we are now ready to use some of our zucchinis to use in cooking zucchini slice for our Health unit- Healthy Eating. During this unit students will be receiving some collector cards each time they bring in a healthy snack for brain break. Could I please ask that you support your child in ensuring they have a healthy snack.
ENGLISH- In English our first unit is ‘Persuasion in Advertising’. We will be identifying persuasive techniques in print advertising, then developing advertising campaigns for a new type of breakfast cereal.
Writing- Last term we were focussing on having short but regular writing sessions across all subjects. This will continue this term and students are off to a great start. They are becoming much more proficient at thinking of ideas quickly and being able to write for different purposes without too much prompting.
Next week I will be absent as my mother is having surgery in Brisbane. Students will have Miss Barb who had them for a week last term, so I’m sure they are in very capable hands!

Yr 7 Maths with Mrs Laffey
Let the fun begin! Students also begin their first official Algebra learning, which is everyone’s favourite memory of highschool maths right? Student’s will get to revise cartesian coordinates in all four quadrants (of course by playing battleships and doing the high school version of dot-to-dot activities) and then learn to actually use this to solve real world problems.
Students will also be looking at linear equations (if apples are $6 each, how much will it cost for x apples? What if they charge me a $1.20 eftpos fee?), graphs and transforming shapes using translation, rotation and reflection.
Mrs Tania Laffey
Yr 9 Language with Mr Delaney
Welcome back!
This term the Year 9 students will start by writing diary entries based on their time on camp - yes, in Japanese. We will be understanding more about the use of kanji and katakana. Later in the term, we will be using our new knowledge of kanji to create some meaningful calligraphy artworks.
Mr James Delaney
Mulkadee Week
We have 9 very talented students in Townsville with Miss Leonie Ansell to perform in Mulkadee.
Mulkadee showcases the increidble talent in our Diocese. The only schools that participate in this event are from our Diocese.
We will be wishing Kayden, Kimberlee, Ruby, Nika, Breanna, Catie, Chloe, Latarnia and Will all the best as they travel to perform.
Student Wellbeing
As adults, we may ignore or downplay a child’s behaviour because it was not intended to be mean or hurtful but young people need our help to learn about acceptable behaviours and when we point out exclusionary behaviour in a non-judgmental and encouraging way they have an opportunity to learn.
Talking with young people about what it means to exclude and how to include others helps build empathy and compassion and can prevent unintentional exclusion. Teaching students to be aware of their own actions will help reduce any unintentional exclusion on their part. The questions we ask and the conversations we stimulate with young people teach them what to pay attention to and can “shift their focus from “all about me” to others” and help them “to draw connections between being excluded and possible negative emotions and between being included and possible positive emotions”.
One way to support young people to think about how they would feel in certain situations is by using the approach: If this… then that. For example:
- If a student is always the last person to be selected in the PE class teams then they may feel left out or unwanted and may not perform as well as they would if they were selected earlier. How can we change things to make sure that doesn’t happen?
- If a student is sitting outside the class circle, then that student may not feel like they belong and are part of the class. What can we do to change that?
Everyone has that memory of when they were the new student or have just joined a club or walked into a room where it seems like everyone has known each other forever. Adults can help young people to draw on this memory pausing and thinking about how it felt and what would have made it easier. A conversation like this is a powerful tool that can be used to encourage students to look out for others who may be left out or finding it hard to join in.
Parents may like to use the following questions when chatting with their young people about how school is going:
- Are there any new kids in your class this year?
- Do you remember when you were the new kid? That was hard, right?
- How can you help this new kid feel welcome?
- You had a good day. Do you think anyone in your class may have had a tough one today? Why?

Spark Club
Our start to Spark Club has been a little disrupted, though the spark is still lit! Yesterday when I had only one beautiful soul with me, I asked the question, "What random acts of kindness can we do?".
We spoke about all sorts of things to do, and what we could contribute to our school. Then this morning, I received this. I do want to thank Bella Swalling for being so kind and thoughtful, always on the ball thinking how we can spark up spark club, always helpful and a constant visitor first lunch! Thank you for being present ❤️. I also love her message at the bottom. Mary Mackillop would be proud her words are still so very present within our school.
Open to ideas for us to Spark up Spark Club! Send them to me if you wish, pmcintyre@sjctsv.catholic.edu.au.
Have a great week,
Miss Pete McIntyre

Change to COVID-19 Rules
The Queensland Government has announced an update to COVID-19 isolation protocols. The change relates to people who have had COVID-19 and are considered ”cleared cases”.
Previously, cleared cases did not need to isolate or get tested if they re-presented with symptoms in the 12-week period after having contracted COVID-19. In response to updated AHPPC advice that reinfections may occur as early as 28 days after recovery from a previous COVID-19 infection, the Queensland Government has announced that the “cleared case” period will be reduced from 12 weeks to 28 days (4 weeks).
This means that people who were previously infected with COVID-19 will need to get tested and isolate if they re-present with symptoms or return a positive test from four weeks after their initial infection.
A reminder to families - please do not send your student to school if they have any flu-like symptoms. Unfortunately the high risk of infection prevents us from being able to accommodate unwell students in our sick bay. If your child is meant to be wearing a mask as a previous case or as a Close Contact, we appreciate your support in providing these and ensuring they are worn.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school’s front office on 4742 1633.
