Principal News
Welcome to Week 10,
Can you believe we are already at the halfway mark for the year? The holidays are so close! We have had a great start to our last week of the term. On Monday we began the week with our Call to Action Assembly which saw Flinders and Kennedy battle one another in a range of challenges. Kennedy took the win as they received 65 points for their house, with Flinders close behind them receiving 50 points. Today we had Books in Homes visit to deliver books to our students in prep to year 6 and Dan Sorbello visiting from the National Rugby League. This afternoon we will also watch a performance from Music Viva. Its all happening!
NAIDOC Celebrations - Save the Date!
NAIDOC week this year will be celebrated from the 3rd-10th of July, however, as we are on school holidays we will be celebrating NAIDOC in the first week back in Term 3, being the 12-15th of July. The NAIDOC theme for 2022 is Get up! Stand Up! Show Up!
Calling for stronger measures to be put in place to recognise, protect and maintain all aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage as Australia Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! Let’s come together in our NAIDOC celebrations to amplify our voices and narrow the gap between aspiration and reality, good intent and outcome.
Below you will see an outline of our NAIDOC week rotations and march with The Cloncurry State School:
Please note that there has been a time change to the liturgy on Thursday afternoon to Thursday morning in P1. This will combine with our Preps 100 days of prep celebration.
Illness
There have been quite a few illnesses this week as students are presenting with high fevers, vomiting and diarrhoea, flu-like symptoms, and hand-foot and mouth.
This is a friendly reminder to please ensure students are remaining home from school if they are unwell and/or contagious.
Recycling
St Joseph’s Catholic School is working towards improving our sustainability. There is a recycling bin located at the back of the school near the music and drama room. Students are encouraged to add their plastic bottles to this bin. If you have recycling at home please feel free to bring it in and add it to this bin. Alternatively you can contact Red Door yourself and get a recycling bin for home.
Dress like a teacher day
We had such a great time last Friday at our ‘dress like a teacher day’. I wanted to congratulate our students that received an award for being the best dressed student for their selected teacher being Grace Swalling, Mika Leonard, Ada McIntyre, Bronzon Mara-Skellern, Will Fisher, Tom Schneekloth and Ryan Harrison. Also a big thank you to our parents that helped our students with their outfits and encouraged them to get into the spirit of the day. We love opportunities to come together as a schooling community for some fun.
Assembly Time Change - Week 10
Please note that the assembly this week will be at 11.30am. This assembly will follow the students morning tea time. We are very excited to be welcoming Jennifer Blackshaw, Peter Stower, John Nuttall and Louise Vella-Cox, Directors of Townsville Catholic Education to our end of term assembly. We will be formally presented with our Certificate of Validation at this assembly which marks the beginning of our 5 year School Renewal Cycle that we entered this year. I would like to extend an invitation to all family and friends to join us for this assembly in the Mary MacKillop Shed at 11.30am on Friday.
Please ensure your child / children are in their full school uniform on Friday.
I wish all of our staff, students and families a safe and happy holiday period and look forward to welcoming you all back for Term 3 on Monday 11th June 2021.
God Bless,
Samantha Kelley

APRE News
Welcome to our final week of Semester 2!
This term we have had a focus on “kindness” and performing “acts of kindness” to our school and community. Over this week each class will take on an act of kindness. These have included:
- Creating cards for the aged care residences
- Making cards to thank our health and emergency services workers
- Painting “You Rock” rocks. To be place around town. With the message “Keep me or re-hide me, but remember “You Rock!”
- Clean the church
- Baking for our community gratitude hampers - which will be handed out at Assembly this Friday.
The children have really embraced paying it forward and spreading kindness across our community. In our Call to Action Assemblies we discussed how sometimes we can take advantage of the good fortunes we have, often forgetting to show our appreciation and have an attitude of gratitude. This week we focused on how a smile or kind word can change someone's day! I encourage families to have the discussion around the dinner table this week about the contagious spread that kindness can have.
Wishing all our St Joseph's community a happy and safe holiday. We look forward to seeing you back next term after a well-deserved break.
Regards,
Mrs Therese Curley

Uniform - Hair
St Joseph’s Catholic School family takes pride in its school uniform. It is a highly visible symbol of who we are and students are required to wear the full school uniform neatly and with pride.
- Hair must be tidy and remain natural in colour and appearance while attending school. Students are permitted to have colours that are subtle and natural looking; our stance is one of moderation.
- Long fringes, scraggly hair around the face, hair extensions, undercuts, mullets or other extremes of style are not permitted.
- Hair is to be no shorter than a No. 3 cut for both males and females.
Female Students:
Hair is to be worn neatly and fastened with a band and/or ribbon in navy blue or checkered scrunchie, if hair reaches the top of the collar.
All hair must be firmly tied and pinned off the face and above the collar.
Single ponytails or plaits must be held firmly in place beneath the crown.
Male students:
Hairstyles will be of a consistent length, not touching the collar, ears and eyebrows.
Student Check In
It is normal for young people to have ups and downs. However changes in mood, levels of participation and thinking patterns that continue for more than a couple of weeks may indicate that your young person needs extra support.
Changes in mood include:
- Being irritable or angry with friends or family for no apparent reason
- Feeling tense, restless, stressed or worried
- Crying for no apparent reason, feeling sad or down for long periods of time
Changes in activity include:
- Not enjoying or not wanting to be involved in things they would normally enjoy
- Being involved in risky behaviour they would normally avoid
- Unusual sleeping or eating habits
Changes in thinking include:
- Having a lot of negative thoughts
- Expressing distorted thoughts about themselves & the world (e.g everything seeming bad & pointless).
If you’re concerned about your child or young person, there are a number of ways you can seek help and advice. If you believe they are at risk of harm, you should seek professional support from your GP, mental health service such as Kids Help Line or emergency department. Our school Guidance Counsellor, Bec Greaves, is on site at St. Joseph’s 3 days per fortnight. Bec is able to assist with students who are having difficulties emotionally.
Dress as Your Teacher Day
Thank you to all our students who took the time to dress up as a teacher or school officer! The outfits were fabulous and it is always a delight to see how the students view the staff!
Years 7-9 Camp
The time has finally come for our Years 7-9 students to head off on their action-packed camp. They will be departing on the last Friday afternoon of the school holidays flying to Brisbane, with an early start the following morning off to the idyllic paradise of North Stradbroke Island. On Straddie, the students will be taken to various natural areas of the island such as the beaches and the headland (potentially seeing humpback whales migrating up the coast), cultural tours, sand boarding and swimming for those who dare! Then off to Brisbane for the majority of the week taking in the sights and delights to consolidate learning from the SJC classrooms at Parliament House, the Queensland Museum and the Gallery of Modern Arts to name a few. A final day at Movie World will see our ‘big’ kids return to the Curry very tired!
I would like to give a huge thanks to the parents & caregivers who have helped fundraise and the parents and students who have supported our activities over the last year. A special thanks to Mr Murray for his organisation of all fundraising activities and the camp - it was a mammoth effort!
Stay tuned to Facebook for up-to-date photos of our students as they challenge themselves to undertake activities that they may never have done before!
Regards,
Mrs Toni Schneekloth
Pastoral Leader
Prep
It is very hard to comprehend that half of the school year is over.
This week in Prep we will continue Initial Lit lessons and hopefully catch up to where we usually are by the middle of the year. Please keep practicing the sounds for the letters learnt and how to write these (up to "J" on the chart), and reading the "Tricky Words" up to the end of set 4. Please return any Home Readers that you have.
Thank you to the parents who have been helping with our literacy groups, and recently, also taking the time to listen to students read individually. This help is very much appreciated and allows us to have smaller and more engaging literacy groups.
In Math the class will continue exploring 3d shapes and numbers to twenty and beyond. For Science we will continue to explore the properties of materials and in HASS explore mapping the features of places.
The Preps have made flowers by using an eyedropper to drop dye onto absorbent paper and also created cards. These will be given to the residents in the aged care facility at the hospital this week.
Reminders:
- 100 days of Prep Celebrations will be on Thursday of the first week back at school next term. Each Prep student is encouraged to dress like they are 100 years old.
- Wednesday: Sport (this has changed this week)
- Thursday: Library and tuckshop
- Friday: Assembly at 11:30am
Wishing you restful school holidays.
Yours in fun and learning,
Mrs Sharon McLauchlan and Miss Tamara Williams
Year 1
Hello everyone,
Wow I cannot believe how quickly this term has flown.
This week we will be revising our terms work.
On Tuesday afternoon we have a special performance from Musica Viva.
NRL will be doing a workshop with our class on Thursday during the day. Please have your child wear their sports uniform.
On Friday our assembly will be held at 11:30am. As the validation team from TCEO head office will be attending the assembly, please ensure that your child comes dressed in their Formal Uniform.
Have a wonderful week and a lovely holiday!
Miss Mae-Louise Brock
Year 2
Hi all,
Woohoo Week 10! We’ve made it!!
This week we are working on the comprehension strategy of Visualising. When we use this strategy, we read and use what we know and our senses to paint pictures in our head about what we are reading. We are also focusing on Time during Maths and are revisiting all of the fantastic concepts we learned during this Semester.
This week we will also be doing some acts of kindness and will be painting some ‘You Rock’ rocks to place around our community!
Have a great week,
Miss Leonie Ansell
Year 3
Welcome to the last week of Term 2! Student’s have had a productive term and it's been lovely to see each child grow both academically and personally over the last few weeks.
The notices for this week are:
- There will be no homework or home readers, but please return any books you may have at home.
- Year 3 will be having a class party on Thursday. Students are welcome to bring in food items to share -please be mindful of food allergies and no soft drinks.
- Student reports will be made available on Compass on Friday. As mentioned at the start of the year, there tends to be a big academic jump between Year 2 and 3, and some students need time to adjust to the higher expectations. Please keep this in mind when viewing your child’s report but all students should be very proud of the achievements they have made this semester.
A big thank you to Mrs Barbara Bryne for jumping into year 3 for Week 9 and 10. We are very excited to be welcoming Mrs Deborah McCann for Semester 2. Mrs McCann has previously been an important part of our St Joseph’s Community and will be flying all the way from The United Kingdom to be with year 3 for Semester 2.
Have a great week ahead and a restful holiday.
Year 4
Year 4 News
SCIENCE: This week we have been extending our work on food chains and life cycles with some imaginative tasks. Students created a game of ‘Predators and Pray’ in the same style as Snakes and Ladders. I loved seeing the individual touches they added to their games showing their creativity.
Students also have to create an imaginary creature and represent its life cycle using plasticine.
ENGLISH: Students used similies to create a poem about themselves.
We are also refining our skills in punctuating direct speech, which continues to be a problem with many students.
I hope you all have a lovely holiday and enjoy some downtime with your children this break.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
Mrs Lesley Wall
Year 5

Year 6
Welcome to Week 10!
Here we are. At the end of the first semester. Crazy how quick it came and went!
Our learning focuses for this week are:
Religion: Students continue working on their creative presentations for their chosen Australian Catholic Christian. We will also be practising for assembly prayer on Friday, which we are leading.
English: To bridge the gap between this term’s persuasive writing and our pitch writing, for the last couple of weeks the students will be creating a unique pizza and writing a persuasive pitch convincing people to buy it.
Mathematics: We are putting our learning of the Cartesian plane into action having a Battleships tournament, creating an artwork and writing a Cartesian compliment letter to a classmate.
HaSS: This week, students will have further opportunities to brainstorm and develop business ideas for their own pop-up businesses.
Health: Students will finalise their assessment on proposing changes to be made for a place in Cloncurry to improve our communities physical activity access.
Japanese: We will be watching the G-rated Japanese animated movie Ponyo. The students will complete some study guide activities to accompany this.
Our PE and Library lessons are both on Wednesday! As per the email sent home, the students also have an NRL development session on Tuesday.
Have a fantastic final week and a very happy holiday break!
Mr. James Delaney & The Year 6 Legends!
Recap P – 6 Tech with Mrs Laffey
Throughout Term 1 we look at digital systems across the grades, and this helped us continue with digital technologies and solutions in Term 2.
P-2
Students began learning how to write simple algorithms (ordered instructions) using arrows and images (and words in year 2). Students explored sequences by completing puzzle paths and using a few different devices and apps. The ones we use are free to use so students can continue learning at home. This is one way we can use our screen time for learning AND fun!
- Bee-Bot is not just a little robot, it’s also a free app!
- Lightbot starts off with very simple sequences but allows students to get into programs and make loops.
- Scratch Jr is a free block coding app for exploring coding and sequences. Students can create animations with all sorts of movements and even record their own sounds. One challenge we have been exploring is making sprites race, or play tag.
3-4
Students used Scratch Online to make a quiz or guessing game. They can access their game on any computer using their login for Scratch, so get online and have a go at their games. Students built their games using drag and drop block coding, and customised them to suit their own interests. Some students were REALLY keen, and perhaps this could be an interesting activity for them to continue over the holidays! Students in these grades may still be interested in Scratch Jr (an app for android and iOS) particularly if they have younger siblings to make animations for.
5-6
Students built on their previous use of Scratch Online make a game of their choice. It has been exciting to watch them develop their own ideas into reality. The beauty of allowing them so much choice is that students become very engaged and excited by the opportunity- however it has been a hard balance to cater to all their various needs! We have had dodging games, timed challenges, dogs collecting bones, learning games, and even a game to grow flowers! Scratch online can be used at home, and is free. It is a great resource for holiday fun.
Student Reports
Reports will be available on Friday via the compass app. Reports are a great way for families to come together and celebrate students achievements. If you are having difficulties accessing reports please contact the office and the staff will assist you. Semester reports include results from both Term 1 and Term 2.
Thank you to our Choir
