Principal News
Welcome to Week 9,
I can’t believe how quickly this term has gone. It has been incredibly busy and I know a lot of our staff and students are looking forward to the upcoming break. I have loved hearing the stories of what our families are planning on doing.
Cloncurry Show Thank you
The community spirit of Cloncurry was clear to see this weekend as our town came together to celebrate The Show. It was great to see so many of our families enjoying the festivities together in the sunshine. I would like to thank our staff, P&F, parents, friends and family members for volunteering your time on the gate. This is a great fundraiser for our school and we are very lucky to have such dedicated people helping us strive for excellence. We appreciate you. I really enjoyed my shift at the gate. It was a fantastic time to speak to our community as they arrived or departed the show.
Semester One Reporting
The term is flying by and our teachers are busy preparing reports on each of our students' progress in Semester One. Assessment and reporting is a vital part of education as it provides a time for both students and teachers to reflect on the work that has been completed, while critically thinking and planning for what needs to occur moving forward. Report cards will be published to the Compass Parent Portal next Friday the 24th of June 2021.
While reporting is often formal, we do encourage parents and caregivers to make regular informal contact with classroom teachers to discuss your child’s wellbeing, progress and goals. At St Joseph’s we are consistently striving to maintain and sustain regular dialogue between our teachers, students and parents to best meet the needs of our students.
It’s the time of term again for me to remind families to check Compass logins. Semester 1 Report Cards will be uploaded on the last day of term. If you are having issues logging into Compass, please contact the office as soon as possible so they can assist.
Food and Drink Items not Permitted
A reminder that students are not permitted to consume soft drink, energy drinks, frozen and hot drinks at School. If a student is found with one of these, they will be asked to put it in the bin immediately. If you need to bring your child lunch during the day, please take it to the Front Office, and they can notify the student. Students should not be waiting at the front of the School for lunches to be delivered.
Assembly Time Change - Week 10
Please note that the assembly in Week 10 will be at 11.30am. This assembly will follow the students morning tea time. We are very excited to be welcoming Jennifer Blackshaw, Peter Stower, John Nuttall and Louise Vella-Cox, Directors of Townsville Catholic Education to our end of term assembly. We will be formally presented with our Certificate of Validation at this assembly which marks the beginning of our 5 year School Renewal Cycle that we entered this year. I would like to extend an invitation to all family and friends to join us for this assembly in the Mary MacKillop Shed at 11.30am next Friday.
I hope you all have a good week.
God Bless.

Welcome to week 9!
Looking at our school’s history
As part of our Action Plan to build our school’s catholic identity, our first call of business is to better document and share the history of how St Joseph’s came to be. This will be displayed on our website and in the form of a sign on our school grounds.
At St Joseph’s we are so fortunate to have this amazing story of our history. It all started with a conversion between Bishop Duhig, Father O’Keefe (Cloncurry parish priest) and Mother Mary of the Cross in early 1909. Where O’Keefe and Duhig asked Mother Mary for her assistance to open a school in Cloncurry. At the time no sisters were available. However, Mother Mary interposed with “The sisters will be found. Our Lord will see to it.”
A short time later Mother Mary died, but not before she had established that her nursing sisters would travel to Cloncurry and open St Joseph’s. So it was on October 28th, 1909, at midnight Mother Mary's nurses, Srs: Berchmans, Cecilia, Rosarii and Audrey arrived by train into Cloncurry. And it was on that same day that they opened St Joseph’s to 75 students who were taught in a bough shed.
Tonight, at our board meeting I will be sharing the archived documents I have received and be making a start on creating a timeline of the events that occurred in our history. I will also be continuing this process in the school Catholic Identity meetings that are held each term. If you have any interest in our school’s history or would like to see any of the documents, please contact myself.
Regards,
Mrs Therese Curley

Respectful Language
In today’s world, it is common to hear socially offensive language on the streets, on social media channels, streaming services and in some forms of modern music. While swearing is becoming more common and less taboo, the use of derogatory language or the act of swearing at someone, or about someone, is a form of verbal violence. It transgresses the usual rules of social interaction by impinging on an individual’s self-image and sense of dignity.
It is becoming apparent that some young people are being influenced by the language they hear. Proliferating the use of swear words can sometimes normalise, glamorise and desensitise their impact for kids who may misunderstand the true meaning of some derogatory terms. Whilst some students may use swearing or derogatory terms as a misguided attempt at belonging, others may use it simply because they are still learning how to moderate their language and are not accustomed to making adjustments to suit different situations.
Although many schools enforce a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to swearing and derogatory language, parents need to also play an important part in enforcing this approach. Parents and carers can be proactive in monitoring what their children are viewing or being exposed to. Discussing the use of words or the origin of some derogatory terms and gaining insight into the reason behind their child’s use of such language can help prevent inappropriate or disrespectful language filtering into the classroom or the school yard, which in turn helps to build more tolerant, safe and connected communities.
This Special Report offers a number of guidelines to help manage a suitable approach when discussing the importance of respectful language.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact Toni Schneekloth, Pastoral Care Leader, or Bec Greaves, Guidance Counsellor, for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Prep
Good afternoon,
I hope you all had an enjoyable show weekend. It was great to see all the Prep contributions in the pavilion. Some vegetable people even made an appearance! Congratulations to everyone on their entries and prizes!

Year 2
Hi all,
Welcome to Week 9!
This week we are working on Time during Maths and are revisiting all of the concepts we learned during this Semester. In Writing, we are working on recounting some of the awesome things we got up to at The Show.
Next week we will be doing some acts of kindness and will be painting some ‘You Rock’ rocks. It would be great if students could collect some round, flat rocks for this activity and bring them into school on Monday morning!
Have a great week,
Miss Leonie Ansell
Year 3
Hi everyone!
Mrs Barbara Bryne will be teaching year 3 for the coming 2 weeks while we await the arrival of Mrs Deborah McCann. Please see below what the students are learning.
This week students have had a big focus on their writing skills. To begin the week students wrote a recount of their time at the show focusing on their five senses. It was great to read through their stories and clear to see the pure joy that this town event brings to their lives. The students have also been focusing on spelling by unpacking the sounds in the words. Students doubled letters with short vowels. Tomorrow students will write a creative story about what animal they would chose to be and why. These are fun and engaging ways to engage students in the practice of writing. It would be great for students to continue this over the upcoming holidays as well.
In maths the students started the week by looking at addition without regrouping and will transition into sabtraction towards the end of the week. Students explored the process of subtracting by 9 and the strategies that they can use. One of the strategies that was implemented was taking away by 10 and then adding 1.
Reminders
- Sport is on Wednesday
- Library is on Thursday
- Homework is due on Friday.
Regards,
Mrs Barbara Bryne
Year 4
The after-Show excitement has been in the air this week and I must say a big congratulations to our students who received a placing in their entries. I saw some very proud faces on the weekend.
Although we have finished our assessment for the term there is lots of work to be done.
Maths- We are finishing our unit on Chance and Data and then we will be focussing on times tables.
English- We are continuing to develop our poetic techniques. This week we are focussing on descriptive poetry. We are writing a class poem about the Cloncurry Dam and then the students will choose a place that is special to them and write their own poem.
HaSS- This week the students will be finishing their presentations about their community group that they think the Cloncurry community would benefit from. These will be ready to present to our Mayor, Greg Campbell, next week.
Have a great week!
Mrs Lesley Wall
Year 5
Welcome to Week 9!
I trust you all enjoyed your long weekend. Year 5 were very keen to share their experiences at the show, when they were given the opportunity to write a recount. Each student was given the chance to read their recount to the class :)
HaSS - This week students have researched a significant bushfire or flood in Australia. They have also explored the role of volunteer services. Students will be working collaboratively to identify the needs and wants of a community, following a significant weather event, and create an action plan that outlines the process to to take to recover from a natural disaster.
Maths - Students will be engaging in a variety of activities to revise content taught this term.
English - Students will begin typing a good copy of their new chapter. Last week, they were taught how to make purposeful edits to make their writing more interesting and coherent. We hope to print and collate all of the new chapters to add to our Year 5 bookshelf.
Reminders:
- Homework - Homework is to be handed in on Friday to be marked. New homework is given out on Monday.
- Friday 17 June - Dress Like Your Teacher Day!
Sports day: Monday

Year 6
Welcome to Week 9!
Our learning focuses for this week are:
Religion: Students will be finalising their work on researching their chosen Australian Catholic and describing how they lived out their faith.
English: To bridge the gap between this term’s persuasive writing and our pitch writing, for the last couple of weeks the students will be creating a unique pizza and writing a persuasive pitch convincing people to buy it.
Mathematics: For the remainder of the term we will be focussing on locating ordered pairs on the Cartesian plane.
HaSS: This week, students will have an opportunity to brainstorm business ideas for their own pop-up businesses. We will be exploring types of businesses further.
Health: Students will finalise their assessment on proposing changes to be made for a place in Cloncurry to improve our communities physical activity access.
Japanese: We will be looking at a simpe recipe in Japanese, learn a few phrases and most importantly, make some onigiri!
As of this term, our PE and Library lessons are both on Wednesday!
Have a blessed week ahead!

UMY - Subject Spotlight
Yr 7 & 8 Art with Mrs Kelley
In Term 2, I have had a great time joining both year 7 and 8 for Drama. Drama is a subject that falls under the banner of ‘The Arts’. Students are provided with the opportunity to explore, depict and celebrate human experience by imagining and representing other people through live enactment. Drama is a collaborative art, combining physical, verbal, visual and aural dimensions. In drama students experience theatre and develop an understanding of the performer/audience relationship.
Our year 7 and 8 students have been working on facial expression and improvisation in Drama. This term students have worked in small grounds on improvisation. This planning and performance formed a large part of the students' assessment. Students worked in groups of 3-4 to plan their drama story. In the performance students had to concentrate on movement and voice skills. Students rehearsed, refined and polished their script to performance level.
Below are some photos of the students hard at work!
Year 9 English with Miss Lovett
This term the year 9 students explored informative texts with a twist! They looked at the structure and features of scientific texts as well as the elements of science-fiction stories; combining the two to produce a speculative fiction piece. Their final assessment pieces were so well produced that I had to remind myself that the ‘information’ I was reading was not factual truth! The writing was a true testament to their creativity and handling of technical features of specific text types - a successful term in English!
9 Religion with Miss Lovett
This term in Religion, students explored the Priestly, Prophetic and Kingly work of Jesus Christ and the ways that everyday people live out their Christian calling. They gained an understanding of visible vs. invisible people in society and determined the importance of using your compassion, voice and influence to support those who society does not see, hear or care for. The students examined different welfare agencies within Australia that support marginalised communities to distinguish between priestly, prophetic and kingly work.
We are beginning our next unit - ‘healing the heart’ where we will explore the sacraments of healing and the Catholic Social Teachings. This will guide students to consider sources of inspiration, strength and guidance for believers today.
Year 9 Maths with Mrs Laffey
Year 9 graphing in maths with Mrs Laffey. The students have been doing this so well, we had to share their lovely work and faces!
