Principal News
Welcome to Week 8,
It is with great excitement that I am writing this newsletter from Brisbane. I am currently in Brisbane to present our proposed administration and primary school building project to the Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC). We are asking for their support to fund this project. If successful there will still be a contribution made by St Josephs, however, this is considerably subsidised with the support of a grant.
In my presentation today I highlighted the enormous amount of support that St Joseph’s have received and continue to receive from our community. I spoke about the commitment from our community to build the current secondary building in 2015, as well as the support we received from a number of businesses in town to renovate our oval over the 2021 Christmas holiday period. As I presented this I felt blessed. Thank you to each and everyone of you for supporting St Joseph’s as we strive to provide the best possible school for our students. I am excited for what the future holds for our school and am committed to providing the best.
School Officer Appreciation Day
This Wednesday it is School Officer Appreciation Day. As a school we will be celebrating all staff at St Joseph’s Catholic School on Friday the 4th of August. In previous years we have celebrated World School Officer, Administration or Teachers Day separately, however, this year we'll be coming together in unity to celebrate the impact that we make each and every day.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous work of our school officer team. To Miss Emma, Miss Jamie-Lea, Miss Rachel, Miss Simeng, Miss Sonnie, Miss Tamara, and Miss Vanessa – we thank you!
Please join me this week in reaching out to Emma, Jamie-Lea, Rachel, Simeng, Sonja, Tamara and Vanessa to thank them and to share the impact they have had on your child’s life.
Fire Drill:
Each term we have a fire drill to ensure our students are aware of the procedure they need to follow in the instance that an emergency evacuation is needed. Please note that we will have a fire drill this coming Thursday at morning tea. This timing has been selected to ensure as little disruption to students learning time as possible. It is also at first break, which is a time that student’s haven’t practised a fire drill in quite some time.
I have included the process below for you to familiarise yourself, but to talk through with your child / children:
Fire Drill Procedure:
- Keep calm and go immediately to the Mary Mackillop Shed.
- Look for your Teacher and/or classmates, line up quietly.
- Your Teacher will do a headcount or roll call, please listen for your name.
- The alarms will be loud, stay calm
- Once the fire is out or practice completed, the alarm will be turned off.
- Please follow your Teachers directions, commonly returning back to class
I hope you have a safe and enjoyable long weekend with your family.
God Bless,
Samantha Kelley
Principal
APRE News
Welcome to week 8! Excitement is in the air as “The Cloncurry Show” dominates the topic of conversion. I am so excited to see all the students work on display in the pavilion. A huge shout out to all our wonderful staff who have made the effort to ensure our students can proudly display their amazing work!
This Wednesday we will celebrate School Officers’ Day. This day provides us with a special opportunity to say thank you to staff who assist children with their learning and are sometimes ‘unsung heroes’. Our School Officers are wonderful people who contribute to the successes our children achieve daily. To all our School Officers, thank you!
Trinity Sunday
This Sunday we celebrate Trinity Sunday. The word ‘Trinity’ comes from the prefix ‘Tri’, referring to the three persons of God, and ‘unity’ which means joined as a whole. Christians believe God is One, a whole, but experienced as three persons.
The doctrine of the Holy Trinity in Christianity is that there is One God who is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Christians believe God is named the Father as he is the creator of all things and watches over us, guiding us and loving us unconditionally. The Son is Jesus Christ, who is the form God chose when He came to Earth. Even though Jesus Christ is known as the ‘Son of God’, according to the doctrine He is the incarnation of God. The Holy Spirit refers to the active force of God, His power and His love. Trinity Sunday is a day to celebrate and give thanks to the Holy Trinity.

BLENDED FAMILIES
Blended or stepfamilies, come in all shapes and sizes. Today, the term “blended family” is more commonly used as opposed to “stepfamily”. Although their original meanings differ slightly, today both terms are used interchangeably. This is mostly due to some of the negative connotations associated with fairytale characters such as the evil stepmother or stepsister.
The blended family is the fastest growing family dynamic in the world with one in five families now being a ‘step’ or ‘blended’ family. However, when families “blend,” it rarely progresses smoothly. Some children resist change, and parents become frustrated when the new family doesn’t function in the same way as the previous one.
For many step-parents, the greatest challenge lies in determining what their role is within the family. The process can be both rewarding and challenging. Children affected by the union of a new couple may not be excited at the prospect of becoming part of a new family.
Although blending families requires adjustment and patience from everyone involved, in this edition of SchoolTV, parents will be given some guidelines of real expectations that can help their new family work through the growing pains.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact Toni Schneekloth, Pastoral Care Leader, or Bec Greaves, Guidance Counsellor, for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Prep
Show week already! The Preps have all created Rainbow Fish artwork which will be entered in the school section at the show. We also entered handwriting. This was done as a whole class activity where we talked about where each letter is positioned on the coloured lines (the focus in Prep is on letter formation, not placement on the lines). Students that were absent will not have a writing piece at the show. Make sure to check out our artwork in the show pavilion!
We have begun to create amazing Potato People. Please bring a potato in if you haven't already. These will be sent home and can be entered in the show in the vegetable section if you wish to take them down to the pavilion before Thursday.
There are some great photos of the Potato People on the school's facebook page in the Prep album. Please remember to have a look on Facebook to see what we have been doing in class!
After the holidays we will be celebrating 100 days in Prep! For this the Prep students DRESS UP AS IF THEY ARE 100 YEARS OLD. They get up on stage at assembly to show off their outfits and to receive an award. Start to plan your childs costume! We will also have a celebratory cake and other activities that day.
Wednesday we will be walking to the Precinct to watch a performance of Charlotte's Web. Brain break snacks will not be required that day as we won't be back until lunchtime. We will take the tuckshop orders down before we leave school. If you are late and have a tuckshop order can you please drop it to tuckshop. We will leave to walk down to the performance straight after the roll is marked in the morning, so please be on time for school.
Have a great week!

UMY - Subject Spotlight
Year 7&8 Language with Mr Delaney
We have been learning about street food in Japan. The students learned about the history and culture of foods such as gyoza, yakitori, karaage, and more! They constructed sentences describing the flavour of these foods using correct adjective forms, including asking questions. This led to the students cooking and ordering these foods using conversational skills, with their peers. Following this experience, wrote a reflection that illustrates their learning and the rehearsed conversations.
Year 9 Food Technology
This term has been a mixture of learning about food production systems (think paddock to plate) and perfecting our baking skills. Students have investigated the parts of the food supply chain that work together to form a food system. They have explored the journey food items take from production to consumption and research the factors that influence the food system, e.g. economy, technology, society and environment. To apply their knowledge, students are currently designing an info-graphic which represents the journey of a specific food commodity through the food system.
