Principal News
Welcome to Week 7,
Thank you to our wonderful P&F and all volunteers that assisted at our Athletics Carnival last Friday. I unfortunately was unwell and couldn’t attend. I have heard that it was a wonderful day with lots of house spirit.
This week we will be acknowledging Reconciliation Week at St Joseph’s. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The National Reconciliation Week 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians— individuals, families, communities, organisations and government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians. Our students will be discussing this in class, and we will conclude the week with a liturgy on Friday morning. This liturgy will be combined with an assembly so we can also acknowledge the achievements of our students this week. We invite all parents, carers, family members and friends along to join us at 8.30am in the Mary MacKillop Shed.
Each term both myself and Mrs Therese Curley, our Assistant Principal for Religious Education travel to Townsville for Professional Development. This week Mrs Curley will be absent from Monday to Thursday and I will be absent from Wednesday to Friday. Please note that Mr Scott Murray will be available at this time as Acting APRE. If you have any concerns, please contact Mr Murray or alternatively email myself on skelley2@sjctsv.catholic.edu.au and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Mulkadee Workshop
This afternoon we have 3 students, Kimberlee Davis, Chloe Savage and Latarnia Sollitt travelling to Mount Isa to engage in a Mulkadee Dance Workshop. The students will then travel to the Granite Mine to be filmed. This will be showcased at the Mulkadee Performance in Townsville on Friday the 22nd of July. Miss Leonie Ansell, who previously performed in Mulkadee herself is our coordinator for this event. In 2015 Miss Ansell held a solo singing performance. A big thank you to Miss Ansell for her work in providing this opportunity for our students.
P&F Meeting
Our next Parents and Friends Meeting is at 3pm this coming Monday the 6th of June. Please join us in the school library. Child minding is available. We would love to see some new faces there to join us.
Show Gate Roster 2022
A big thank you to the parents, carers and family members that have signed up to assist us on the gates at The Cloncurry Show next weekend. It was great to see so many spots fill so quickly. We do however still have the following time slots available and would love your help:
- Saturday 11.30am (2 spots available)
- Saturday 1.30pm (3 spots available)
- Saturday 3.30pm (4 spots available)
- Saturday 5.30pm (4 spots available)
- Saturday 7.30pm (2 spots available)
Please book your time slot on the following link:
In running the gates at the show, we will receive a donation of $2500.00 which will go towards replacing the sound system in the shed. Our current sound system can’t have a number of microphones running at the same time or near one another. This can be quite challenging for performances, events, plays etc. We also can’t hear the sound system from the oval which can be challenging for events like our school fete. We have been lucky enough to borrow sound systems from MMG and Evolution Mining in the past, however, would love to update our current system for future use.
BGA Application
Here is a sneak peak of our proposed entry to the school. I will be flying to Brisbane next Monday morning to present our application to the panel at Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC) alongside Mr Thomas Eldridge, Facilities and Administrator for Townsville Catholic Education.
Life Education – Year 5 and 6
Life Education will be visiting St Joseph’s Catholic School students in Years 5 & 6 on Wednesday 1st of June and Thursday 2nd of June 2022 (Week 7). Life Education is the largest non-government provider of health and wellbeing to children in Queensland. Educators from Life Education travel across QLD to deliver face to face sessions on health and wellbeing to children.
Year 5 students will be receiving the foundational level of Identity, Relationships and Puberty as they partake in the modules of Who Am I?, Evolving Friendships and Welcome to Puberty. Year 6 will be receiving the growth level in Discovering Identity, Navigating Relationships and Surviving Puberty as they completed the foundational levels last year.
God Bless,
Samantha Kelley
Principal
APRE News
Welcome to Week 7! This week I am writing to you from Townsville as I am gathering with all APREs across our diocese to focus on “Growing Dialogical Schools”. I look forward to these networking opportunities and building my capacity to better serve our school.
Reconcilliation Week:
This week we celebrate Reconcilliation Week. The 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians; individuals, families, communities, organisations and government to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can “Make Change” for the benefit of all Australians. During the week the classes will discuss how they can make change with brave actions whether it be at home, school or out and about. We can all contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia!
Pentecost:
This coming Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Spirit, Pentecost. Pentecost derived from the Greek word "pentecoste," meaning 50th. The feast of Pentecost occurs 50 days after the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Pentecost celebrates the time the Holy Spirit descended to the 12 disciples of Jesus. Christians believe that the Holy Spirit blessed them with the ability to speak different languages. This meant they could easily spread the word of the Lord to the world. It’s also believed to be the start of the Christian church.
Notices:
- Assembly Prayer: Our Emerging Leaders will lead us in a prayer for Reconciliation Week.
- Children’s Mass this Sunday (5th June): This mass will celebrate Pentecost - all children are welcome to join us. Please email me if your child/children will be able to attend. I will take them for a practice this Friday.
Regards,
Mrs Therese Curley

The Resilience Project - At Home
So have you heard about Hugh’s podcast? It is titled, “The Imperfect Podcast”. Teaming up with one of Australia’s most successful comedians, Ryan Shelton, and his very talented brother Josh van Cuylenburg, Hugh has put together a podcast which is all about how perfectly imperfect we all are. Constantly comparing ourselves to others can not only be exhausting, but extremely harmful. However, when we share our struggles, we start to realise that everyone, no matter how successful, has something they are battling with.
Check them out at https://theresilienceproject.com.au/at-home/podcasts/ where there are a host of different podcasts to listen to on building empathy, gratitude, mindfulness and resilience!
HAPPINESS & GRATITUDE
Happiness is a term that captures a huge variety of positive emotions such as humour, serenity, optimism, joy, pride, inspiration, love and hope. Happiness means different things, to different people and is essential to your understanding of emotional literacy. Throughout history, philosophers, religious writers and poets have pondered on the meaning of happiness and how it might be achieved. In the last few decades, scientists and psychologists have researched this further by studying a field of science called positive psychology.
The result of this research suggests there is a strong correlation between gratitude and greater happiness. Practising gratitude helps you shift your focus to positive memories or experiences, noticing the good in your life. Over time, this will re-wire your brain to create new neural pathways, increase your state of happiness and overall wellbeing.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents and care-givers will learn how to achieve happiness and the benefits of practising gratitude.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the Pastoral Care Leader, Toni Schneekloth, or Guidance Counsellor, Bec Greaves, for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Week 7 News.
This week in HASS we will be exploring the "features" of places. We will be sending a worksheet home to complete with your child. The purpose of this is to explore and discuss the features you pass on your way to school.
At the end of the week we will read The Potato People in readiness for making Potato People. You may like to enter these into the show in the vegetable section. It would be helpful if each child could bring a medium sized potato to add hair, eyes, limbs etc to with craft items. It would be great if we had these by Friday. Any leftover potatoes will be planted and then harvested later in the year to use for cooking.
The class will be exploring the book "Finding Our Heart" and learning some new songs as part of our Reconciliation Week activities. The story "Finding Our Heart" is about The Uluru Statement; about all Australian people coming together at Uluru. A book about understanding Australia’s past, so we can have a shared future.
Miss Tamara is away for a week or so. Miss Emma, who is new to our school, will be replacing her.
Yours in fun and learning,
Mrs Sharon McLauchlan and Miss Tamara Williams

Hi Everyone,
Chicken News- This week the chicks were excited to move into their new home where they can roam more freely and be a bit safer from the crows. Thanks to Rene Winner-Harrison for picking this up from Mt Isa for us.
Show Entries- Last Thursday we finished our Show art entries and started presenting our writing to be entered as well so good luck to all our students! I’m sure you will enjoy seeing their fantastic work.
I will be absent next week as I help set up for the Show. The students will have the same teacher all week and I am sure they will cope perfectly well while I’m gone!
Religion- This week we have started our new unit ‘The Significance of Communities’ where we will discover the community of the early Jewish church in Palestine as well as the early Australian church.
Homework- I have asked that all students bring in their Homework books this Friday whether they have completed it or not. I just want to make sure they have all got one as I haven’t seen some for a very long time and am not sure if that means they have lost it.
Have a great week!

Athletics Day
Congratulations to all students who came and competed last Friday with our Athletics Day. Our war cry practices paid off with Kennedy taking the win with their creative actions and loud cheering. Flinders you did well too.
Thank you to the P&F for your support holding a canteen and providing delicious food to our staff, students and families. The roast beef and gravy rolls were so good! Thanks again for helping out.
To all students, you all showed fantastic sportsmanship, house colours, great comradery and great attitudes throughout the whole day. Each event went smoothly and though not everyone wins, you showed me you are all winners. For those parents, staff & community members who have emailed or contacted, I thank you for the input. I like feedback as it always helps with our future events.
This Friday awards will be given to House Winners, Age Champions & Runner-Up Champions at our assembly starting at 8.30am. I hope to see you all there.

I loved the Athletics Carnival and all it brings. I want to congratulate all the students on their efforts! In my eyes, I see happy faces, faces that are busting and breathing hard to win that race and then I see the most amazing team spirit! Thanks also to our amazing staff especially Mr Murray. You are amazing at what you do and with minimal help, always create terrific carnivals for our St Joseph's community.
Chaplaincy Breakfast: Tuesday & Thursday mornings in the MMS, 7.30am - 8.15am. Parents, you are welcome too :). This is a FREE breakfast and there is always a piece of fruit available for brain break.
Spark Club: I am about to launch "Spark Mail". I found the old mailbox from Prep, and thought what a way to get some students/staff/families to send me a letter. Whether you need support, a gratitude letter, ideas for Spark Club, something you would like to share about our school, a recipe, or to simply express something on paper, this is an opportunity to do it! The mailbox is now situated in the resource/printing room where my desk is!
Friday Rewards will be on this week! There will be an assembly and winners! I'm excited to treat the kids this Friday with noodles and a game of Kahoot!
Thank you to the parents & families that purchased some chocolates to help fundraise for the breaky club! I appreciate the support! I will be in contact when the orders are here! I'll be selling coffees in the MMS tuckshop from 7.30am on Friday's, another way to fundraise for chaplaincy things! I encourage you to bring your own cup to fill up! Of course we will have takeaway ones as well and perhaps a little nibble option too! Cash or eftpos available :).
