Principal News
Welcome to Week 6,
Thank you to the families that joined us last Friday evening at our first Trivia Night. It was so nice to come together for a night of fun and laughter. A big thank you to our P&F Social Coordinator Mrs Bridget Carverd and to Mrs Therese Curley and Mr Scott Murray for their work in making sure the event ran smoothly and came together so well. I would also like to acknowledge our sponsors - The Central Hotel, Foodworks, IGA, The Leichhardt Hotel, The Post Office, and The Wagon Wheel. It was great to also have the support of MMG with an amazing sound system for the evening.
It is important that we acknowledge National Sorry Day this coming Thursday the 26th of May. National Sorry Day provides a chance to focus on healing and pursue reconciliation in Australian Society. At St Joseph’s Catholic School we are committed to reconciliation and meet regularly with our steering committee on how this can be achieved in the school. We also have a Reconciliation Action Plan that strives towards reconciliation. At St Joseph’s we stand together.
Dance for Sick Kids - Ronald McDonald House Fundraiser:
We have a very busy week ahead of us with the Dance for Sick Kids fundraiser on Thursday. Miss Jill will be dancing with each class for 30 minutes on Thursday to raise funds for The Ronald McDonald House. Please send a gold coin donation with your child on the day.

St Joseph's Catholic School will be operating the gates at the Cloncurry Show this year. We will receive $2500 for doing so, which will be used towards updating the soundsystem in the Mary MacKillop Shed.

Athletics Carnival
We are very excited for the Athletics Carnival on Friday. We hope to see all of our parents and family members on the day. Our P&F will be providing a small canteen on the day and would love some volunteers to assist with this, if you have a spare hour or two on the day we would love to hear from you.
Students must arrive at the Recreation Grounds at 8.30am, not to school. Please note that there will be no staff at school while the students are at the Athletics Carnival. Please see information sent home by Mr Scott Murray.
Go Flinders & Kennedy!

APRE News
Welcome to week 6. This morning we celebrated mass at school for Mary, Help of Christians Day. We were blessed to have both Fr Mick and Fr Emene share in this mass. Following the mass they both visited the classes.
Mary, Help of Christians
The feast day for Mary, Help of Christians has been celebrated in Australia since 1844. In the early days there were no priests in the colonies and it was largely the Rosary and praying to Mary that kept the faith alive. Catholic Australia remained faithful to Mary and was the first nation to choose her under the title “Help of Christians” as our principal Patroness.
Laudato Si’ Week 2022 - May 22-29
This week will mark the seventh anniversary of Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical (letter written by the Pope) on creation care. It focuses on care for the natural environment and all people, as well as broader questions of the relationship between God, humans, and the Earth. The encyclical's subtitle, “Care for Our Common Home,” reinforces these key themes.
The aim of this global celebration is to unite Catholics to listen and respond together to the cry of creation and rejoice in the progress we have made in bringing Laudato Si’ to life.
In our call to Action Assembly this week we watched a video explaining Pope Francis’ vision and discussed ways we can "Care for Our Common Home". I have attached the link here. You may like to focus your dinner time discussion this week on ways we can care for Our Common Home/Environment.
Notices:
No assembly this week due to Athletics Carnival
Sunday 5th June Children’s Mass: This mass will celebrate Pentecost - all children are welcome to join us. An email was sent out yesterday asking for students who wish to take part in the mass.
Alpha Program will be run after Sunday Mass
Prep
We have finished our current HASS and science units and are moving on to learning about the "properties of materials" in science and "our place in space" in HASS.
We have completed our show artwork and writing. It looks amazing and I can't wait to see them displayed at the show!
We had our Prep open evening on Monday this week. If you know of anyone who is considering sending their child to St Joseph's next year, please encourage them to collect an enrolment form from the office.
Reminders:
Please RETURN YOUR HOME READER ON THE DAY ALLOCATED, otherwise we do not have enough books (which only use the letters taught) to enable us to swap them. ALSO, TAKE THESE OUT OF YOUR CHILD'S BAG AND PUT THEM INTO THE HOMEWORK TUB. We do not check bags for literacy folders or library bags.
Wednesday - Order tuckshop
Thursday - Tuckshop and library.
Friday - Athletics carnival. Prep students' should finish around 11:00 am. They are free to go home at this time. They are usually exhausted so this is a good option if possible. Any students that are not able to go home will come back to school with me.
Yours in fun and learning,
Mrs McLauchlan and Miss Tamara
Year 1
Hello Parents and Carers,
Welcome to week 6!
This week in Year 1 we are learning about;
Religion: We are learning to identify words, actions, and symbols used in the Sacrament of Baptism. We are lucky that Fr Emene will join our class today after the school Mass to discuss why people are baptised.
Math: We are moving on to our unit of direction. Students are already exploring programming beebots to follow directions on a map. For the remainder of the term, students will use the language of direction to move from place to place.
English/Science: This week we have started looking at different Australian animals. Using the amazing work of Peter Cromer, students have identified Australian animals, researched information about them, and completed a portrait of the chosen Australian animal.
HASS: We are learning to share stories about the past, and present observations and findings using everyday terms.
Health: We are learning to identify ways we can be safe in our community. Specifically, safety near the road.
Reminder:
- The sports carnival is on Friday! Please refer to the note from Mr. Murray that was sent home with your child yesterday.
- Due to the sports carnival, our sports day has been changed from Friday to Wednesday. Please have your child wear their sports uniform on Wednesday.
- Library: Is on Thursday if you haven’t already, please send your child’s library bag to school.
- Homework: Homework will be handed out on Thursday and expected back next Wednesday.

- HASS: we will read about the Great Barrier Reef and learn how to take notes when researching
The key notices for this week are:
- Sport is on Wednesday
- Library is on Thursday
- Homework and home readers are due on Friday
- Athletics Carnival on Friday - Please ensure that your child has a hat, water bottle and wears sunscreen.
Have a great week ahead!
Year 4
Hello and happy week 6! Here is a look at some of the things we are up to in the Year 4 classroom this week.
ENGLISH- We have begun a new unit called ‘Humour in Poetry’ which has gotten off to a cracking start. The students have made alliteration icecreams and onomatopoeia pops to practice using these poetic techniques and, although they were made of paper, they contained some delicious language!
HaSS- This week we will begin looking at our task of preparing a submission for the Cloncurry Shire Council for a grant for a community group that we believe Cloncurry and its citizens would benefit from. Students will work in pairs to complete this task.
MATHS- Last week the students smashed the concept of tenths, so this week we are moving on to hundredths, which they have already shown a good understanding of.
Don’t forget that the Athletics carnival is this Friday. Please ensure that your child has a hat, water bottle and wears sunscreen.
I will be absent on Thursday and Friday but look forward to hearing the results on Monday.
Have a great week!
Year 5
Welcome to Week 5!
Maths - We are learning to solve problems involving the multiplication of large numbers by one- or two-digit numbers, using a variety of strategies, including the split strategy, area model, and the standard algorithm.
English - We are learning to use complex sentences in our writing. When your child is reading, you might like to encourage them to identify a complex sentence and read it aloud to you. I encouraged them to explain to you what a complex sentence is when they got home from school yesterday :)
HaSS- We have moved on to a new unit in HaSS! We will be learning about bushfires and floods, specifically how and where they occur and how people can help to prevent and prepare for them. At the end of the unit, students will work cooperatively to create an action plan to respond to a bushfire or flood, with details of the expected effects of their plan.
Reminders:
- Dance for Sick Kids Fundraiser to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House this Thursday 26th May. Please send a gold coin donation with your child.
- Athletics carnival this Friday 27th May, therefore, no assembly. Students are to meet at Cloncurry Recreation Grounds at 8:30 am.
Sports day: Mondays
Library day: Wednesdays
Yours in Faith and Education,
Therese von Drehnen
Year 6
Welcome to Week 6!
How are we past the halfway point already?
Our learning focuses for this week are:
Religion: This week, students will continue researching a contemporary Australian Catholic for their assessment task.
English: Students will finish organising their ideas into body paragraphs using the PEEL structure before going back to Sizzling Starts and finally, Exciting Endings.
Mathematics: We will be spending the remainder of this week on fractions, particularly adding and subtracting (finding common denominators).
HaSS: This week we begin our Business & Economics learning. Students will be learning about the components of business before starting their own.
Health: We have been learning about physical activity, foods that support it, the different types, and its benefits.
Japanese: We will be finalising our learning of classroom language and asking for items. Students will then begin preparing for a spoken and written assessment of all the things we have learned so far this term.
As of this term, our PE and Library lessons are both on Wednesday!
Have a blessed week ahead!
Mr. Delaney & The Year 6 Legends!
UMY - Subject Spotlight
Year 7 Geography with Mrs Schneekloth
The Year 7 students are wrapping up their unit on Place & Liveability - what makes a place liveability for them.
Year 9 Maths with Mrs Laffey
More than halfway through the Term, and finished our first Unit (Geometry and Simple Interest)! Students showed quite a bit of Interest in the money side of that unit, they had a lot of questions about general banking and fees at the end of Term 1 and then we continued with learning how to use and rearrange formulas both for Interest and for Surface Area/Volume.
We have started on Chance and Data where students are investigating probability of events with and without replacement, and look at the differences of Primary and Secondary Data. Data is a really important topic for our students to help them make sense of information and statistics they come upon in their everyday lives.
