Principal News
Welcome to Week 10,
Can you believe we are already at the halfway mark for the year? I have only been back from leave for three and a half weeks and the time has flown by! I wanted to reach out to our students parents and community members to thank you for welcoming me back with open arms and for supporting me in a time of need.
NAIDOC Celebrations
NAIDOC week this year will be celebrated from the 4-11th of July, however, as we are on holidays we will be celebrating NAIDOC this Friday. The NAIDOC theme for 2021 is Heal Country, Heal our Nation; calling for stronger measures to be put in place to recognise, protect and maintain all aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage. This link explains the 2021 theme in greater detail, emphasizing the significance of country to the identity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially and culturally. We look forward to coming together on Friday to deepen our understanding of how we can help heal our Country and Nation.
Illness
There have been an increasing number of students being sent home from school with cold and flu-like symptoms. This is a friendly reminder to please ensure students are remaining home from school if they are unwell and/or contagious.
COVID Hotspot Declarations
There have been a number of COVID outbreaks recently, which have been communicated by the Queensland Government. If you are traveling interstate these holidays or entering a COVID hotspot please ensure you are remaining up to date with the exposure sights. You will be able to find updated information from The Queensland Government Health Website. If you are travelling this holiday period, please stay safe.
Recycling
St Joseph’s Catholic School had a recycling bin located at the front of the College this year for Caritas. This was a great initiative that our students, teachers and schooling community jumped on and supported straight away. We had to make contact regularly for the bin to be collected because it was filled so regularly. We are wanting to continue with this sustainable initiative but have relocated the bin to the back of the school. If you would like directions on where to find this please phone the office or pop in and we can show you the recycling bin’s new home.
Dress like a teacher day
We had such a great time last friday at our ‘dress like a teacher day’. I wanted to congratulate our students that received an award for being the best dressed student for their selected teacher and also to Angus McIntyre and Wyatt Mara-Skellern for being our overall best dressed ‘teachers’ on the day. Also a big thank you to our parents that helped our students with their outfits and encouraged them to get into the spirit of the day. We love opportunities to come together as a schooling community for some fun.
Block Grant Authority (BGA) Application - Outcome
Towards the end of 2020 St Joseph’s submitted a BGA application to knock down and rebuild our primary facilities and our administration block. We unfortunately on this occasion have been unsuccessful in obtaining this grant. The Townsville Catholic Education Office have acknowledged the need for us to update/revamp our lower primary facilities and are currently in discussion with us on how to best do this. Although we are disappointed that we have been unsuccessful with this we are remaining positive and jumping right back into the planning stages to offer the best possible learning environments and facilities for our students.
I wish all of our staff, students and families a safe and happy holiday period and look forward to welcoming you all back for Term 3 on Monday 12th June 2021.
God Bless,
Samantha Kelley

APRE News
It’s hard to believe that we are in Week 10 of Term Two this week. We’ve had a very busy term this term which had some challenges and heaps of successes.
We thank God for this term in its entirety. As we start holidays on Friday I pray that God is with you as you spend time with family and friends. I pray that we come back refreshed and ready for a new term.
I would like to thank all our staff, parents, students and community members for a wonderful Term Two.
Gospel Reading
Mark 4:35-41
Jesus calms the storm.
Worries and concerns are part of human life. Jesus teaches us, however, that we ought not to let worries and concerns consume us. Jesus teaches us that our faith ought to lead us to trust in God's protection and love, no matter how strong the whirlwind going on around us. Like the disciples, we can bring our worries and concerns to Jesus in prayer. Jesus will hear our cries for help. He knows that our faith can be fragile and he will act so that our trust in God will be strengthened. As you gather as a family, invite each family member to talk about something that might be worrying them. Talk about how important it is to share worries and concerns with other people. When we do this, we learn to see our worries from a different perspective. Read today's Gospel, Mark 4:35-41. Ask your family questions such as these: Why were the disciples worried about the storm? Why wasn't Jesus worried about the storm? When we bring our worries to Jesus in prayer, Jesus can help us see things from God's perspective. Invite family members to name again a worry or concern and pray together that Jesus will help us have faith in God's love and protection. Conclude in prayer together by praying the Lord's Prayer.
Becoming New in Christ
At the start of this year, Bishop Tim started a renewal process within our diocese with this year being a year of consultation. Throughout the year we have focused on three themes namely: Belong, Believe and Becoming. For each theme we have had questions set by Bishop Tim. It’s not only about the individual words but the sequence in which they are applied; the sequence Belong Believe Become is necessary for the mission of a Catholic parish today, but that is not what we tend to do. We all too easily do the opposite - Become Believe Belong – that is, we give people the message: ‘you become like us (fit in straight away) and we’ll show you what to believe, and then we might let you belong.’ This was not Jesus’ way, not what Pope Francis is calling for, and thwarts a major purpose (mission) for which the parish exists: reaching people who do not know Jesus. As a school we are planning to explore the renewal process in a deeper way. We will be having discussions in classes and around the school with staff and students.
On Tuesday and Thursday we will be having sessions with students to have discussions around Belong, Believe and Become.

Pastoral Care
Well parents and caregivers, we made it! What an action packed term, and who can believe that we are almost at the end of June; where has 2021 gone? When looking at the school calendar 10 weeks ago, it was hard to see a day at SJC that did not have some event or activity scheduled. This leads me to my focus this week: parent & caregiver well being.
Raising children is an important job, and looking after yourself helps you do the job well. That’s because looking after yourself physically, mentally and emotionally helps you give your children what they need to grow and thrive. Looking after yourself involves looking after your relationships, your health and your wellbeing. With the busyness of life and focussing on our student’s schooling and activities, it’s easy to forget or run out of time to look after these parts of your life. But looking after yourself is worth it – it’s good for you and good for your children. Take the time to refresh yourselves over the holiday break with some of these techniques.
PAUSE
This is so simple and you can even fit it into your workday. Find the natural pauses in your day like waiting in traffic, standing in a queue or waiting for the kettle to boil. Rather than reach for your phone, use these moments to be still; check in with yourself, repeat your favourite mantra. Breathe deeply and release anything that is weighing you down. Not only will you be amazed at how many of these moments you can find in your day but also at the benefits that you feel from pausing just for a minute or two.
EAT WELL
Would you like to make a change in your diet? You’re not alone. Most of us have something that we’d love to change, but we find it challenging for one reason or another. I know that it doesn’t always feel easy, but the benefits are long-lasting and help us age with increased health and vitality. So, what is it for you? Do you want to eat cleaner - less sugar, meat, caffeine or processed food? Remember that slow and steady wins the race. Make incremental changes that you can acclimatise to, and you’ll be much more likely to make those changes permanent.
MEDITATE
If you’ve tried meditation in the past and not continued the practice, then encourage you to give it another try. If you struggle to find 10-15 minutes a day, then start with 1-2 minutes...you’ll still feel some benefits, and it’s much better to move forward slowly than not at all. If you’re new to meditation, then here are a few more tips to help you make meditation one of your daily wellness habits. Download the Smiling Mind app - we will be introducing this to our students in Term 3.
CREATE QUIET ZONES
Start and end your day with quiet moments of connection. Leave the TV off and your phone out of sight while you settle down and enjoy some quiet time alone or with your family. These moments could be sharing mealtimes or simply sharing what’s gone well in your day. Making these moments part of your daily ritual will become a habit over time and can help to strengthen a deeper connection with yourself and those you love most.
RECONNECT WITH NATURE
Even in the colder months, it helps to get outside as often as you can. Nothing made me happier during the holiday periods than to see so many more people making the most of a simple walk - either alone or with their families...what a wonderful way to re-connect. Try getting moments of fresh air during your day too, by enjoying your breakfast outside, taking a walk at lunchtime or simply throwing the windows open while you work.
ENJOY NAPS
Think that naps are reserved for children and your retirement years? Well, research shows that they can work wonders for boosting our health and wellbeing. Even a nap as short as 10-15 minutes can leave us feeling more alert and more productive. I know that taking a rest in the middle of a workday isn’t always a practical option - unless you’re working from home - but they’re worth adding to your weekend wellness plan if you have a chance.

Prep
Week 10!
This week in English we will learn about the letter "j" and all of the set 5 Tricky Words. Literacy rotations will continue this week. Thank you to all the helpers we have had this Term. It has made it easier to have the students in groups with similar ability levels and to also have slightly smaller groups. Please try to find time to practice Tricky Words and to read over the holidays. This week in Math we will be exploring ordinal numbers, in Health we will continue to look at ways to stay safe and healthy and in Music we will continue to explore rhythm, pitch and expression.
I have a specialist appointment in Townsville this week and will be away Tuesday and Wednesday. Miss. V will be the teacher in Prep on these days.
Our 100 days of Prep falls on the day of our sports carnival (Friday in Week 1).
Due to this we will celebrate the following Friday (105 days in Prep). The students will get a 100 days of Prep award at assembly and also parade their "100 year old" dress up costumes. After that we will have a celebratory 100 days cake and do some 100 activities during the day. It would be great if each student could bring a named zippy lock sandwich bag with 100 objects in it. Be creative - 100 jelly beans, 100 split peas, 100 small stones. We will create a "What does 100 look like?" display with these.
Thank you for the donations for our hospital dramatic play area! I am looking forward to setting it up.
On Friday (last day of school) we will spend the morning doing a variety of NAIDOC activities and have a sausage sizzle celebration. What a fun way to finish the Term!
Thank you for a wonderful Term 2. I hope you enjoy your break from the routine of school over the holidays. I know I will!

Year 1
Wow week 10 already!
This week in Year 1 we are revising place value and our descriptive writing. We have also started our Term 3 unit on Media Arts, learning about google Slides and how to insert pictures and voice overs. This week we will also have an emphasis on NAIDOC as on Friday we are celebrating and participating in a NAIDOC day filled with different activities.
Reminders:
Please ensure that all readers and library books are returned by the end of the week so they can be scanned in and put away.
Have a lovely week everyone!
Miss Brock and the always fun Year 1’s.
Year 2
Yay! We’ve made it to Week 10!
This week we voted for who our SRC representatives from Year 2 will be. Well done to all students who nominated and a special congratulations to Indi and Wyatt who are now or SRC members. We have also been working hard on our artwork for the school fete.
This week we are learning:

Year 3
Hi everyone!
Welcome to the last week of Term 2! Student’s have had a productive term and it's been lovely to see each child grow both academically and personally over the last 10 weeks.
I am away this week but Year 3 are being well looked after by Miss V. I will return in Week 1 of next term.
The notices for this week are:
- There will be no homework or home readers, but please return any books you may have at home.
- Year 3 will be having a class party on Thursday. Students are welcome to bring in food items to share -- please be mindful of food allergies.
- Student reports will be made available on Compass on Friday. As mentioned at the start of the year, there tends to be a big academic jump between Year 2 and 3, and some students need time to adjust to the higher expectations. Please keep this in mind when viewing your child’s report but all students should be very proud of the achievements they have made this semester.
- We are sadly farewelling a student at the end of this term - Harlem and his family will be returning to New Zealand. We wish them all the very best on this new adventure!
Have a great week ahead and a restful holiday. See you in Term 3!
Miss Coombs
Year 4
Hi Everyone,
I would like to congratulate the Year 4 students on the successes they have had this term and their determination that I have seen develop throughout the term.
Some of our highlights have been-:
- The improvement in working in collaborative groups to achieve a common goal.
- The willingness to attempt tasks independently before asking for assistance.
- The ability to identify which zone they are in according to the Zones of Regulations (next term we will be focussing on how to regulate our emotions).
- The hatching of our chicks and being committed to looking after them.
- The excellent Historical Recounts that all students wrote and their confidence when presenting these to the class.
- An improved understanding of the operations in Maths and when to use these to solve problems.
I hope you all have a lovely, safe two weeks with your children and they return refreshed and ready for a great Term 3!

Library News
As you know we had a Scholastic book Fair 3 weeks ago. Thank you so much for your support!
If you have any suggestions for next year, please let me know.
After counting our takings, we made $1404.40
This is such a wonderful effort and of course we get 20% of that money to go to our library budget.
I have been liaising with Mrs. Kelly and we are going to purchase some new furniture for the library. The Beanbags are becoming old now and a little worn.
Once again if you have any suggestions, we are happy to take them on board.
As the holidays are coming up, I thought I would give you some warning as to our theme for Book Week this year. Book Week is 21st to 27th August.
The title of our theme this year is “Old Worlds, New Worlds, and Other Worlds” this theme gives us a big scope for our dressing up costumes. It would be great if you could help your child/children choose a book character that pertains to a book, after all it is our Book Week. If you are having a problem with dressing up, come and see me and maybe I could help with some ideas. Pinterest is great for ideas!
As usual our library is a special place to come and read and do group work. It is such a lovely warm space to come in from the cold and read.
Thank you for your support!
Enjoy the holidays! We will resume borrowing the first week back next term.
Kind Regards,
Chris Chaplain
Teacher Librarian
