Principal News
Welcome to Week 8,
We have a very exciting week ahead of us.
Project Compassion:
On Monday we joined together as a school in the St Colman's Parish to talk about Project Compassion. The profits that we make from selling icy poles and holding a disco each Friday will be donated to Project Compassion to help others that are less privileged than us. Yesterday we spoke about the difference that we can make in the lives of others, by first bringing recognition to the blessings that we have, but also by financially supporting families in need, as an example $25 can provide a vegetable garden to feed a family for an entire year. Students can also wear green this Thursday for St Patrick's Day. Students are encouraged to bring a gold coin donation to school with them for project compassion.
Students were also challenged in Church on Monday to think about a way that they can spread kindness this week. Talk to your child/children at home about ways in which they have or intend to show this to a peer or to the environment this week.
Opening Mass and St Joseph’s Feast Day:
On Friday we kick off the day with our Opening Mass, followed by St Joseph Feast Day activities. This will start in the Mary MacKillop Shed at 8.30am. The Mass will go for approximately 1 hour and activities will follow until first break.
I kindly ask that all students are dressed in their formal uniform for this occasion. Parents, you are not only invited to join us for the Mass, but please stay behind to join your child/children in Feast Day activities. It is a fantastic time for us to come together as a community.
In my speech on Friday, I will speak about two things, servant leadership, and persistence. As I sit here and think about the amazing qualities of our community at St Joseph’s I reflect on the people we are surrounded with that go out of their way to serve those around them. There are incredible leaders in our community that will be acknowledged on Friday.
I will also speak about the important skill of persistence. If we look at the life of St Mary MacKillop or St Joseph there were challenges and difficulties that they faced, however, persistence and perseverance got them through it.
St Mary MacKillop was renowned for her acts of charity and the gift of education to those in need, but this didn’t come easy for Mary as she was born into poverty. At the age of 15, nine years before she founded the Sisters of St Joseph, Mary was thrust into the role of breadwinner for her seven siblings. Mary was then faced with the challenge of wanting to open schools and provide education for children but didn’t have the money to do so, so she had to go out into the world and work hard for this. She faced many obstacles including the Church, but she maintained her resolve. She said “Whatever troubles may be before you, accept them bravely” and face the obstacles ahead!
St Joseph is the patron saint of the Universal Church, families, fathers, expectant mothers, travellers, immigrants, craftsmen, engineers, and working people. In the cave behind the Chapel of Saint Joseph stands a statue of St. Joseph the Dreamer. St Joseph worked hard for his family, passing these skills onto Jesus. St Mary MacKillop and St Joseph showed persistence, they were faced with challenges but they worked hard to overcome them.
There will be things that your child/children will come across this year, both at school and at home that will challenge them, but it is through challenges that they will learn. In fact, no one can learn a new skill without practice and this is also true in the classroom. Students need to practice and persist.
Parents it would be great if you could share with your children how you persist with difficult tasks. It is important for children to see that it is okay to find things difficult or challenging and that this doesn't equal failure but shows the learning that is occurring.
COVID-19:
As communicated via email last week we are currently experiencing high numbers of COVID-19 within our schooling community. The symptoms that students are presenting with are high temperatures, headaches, and fatigue. We also had some students go home with the symptom of vomiting last week, who tested positive to COVID-19.
I thank you for informing the school and recording your positive COVID-19 results with QLD Health.
Instead of emailing parents and carers of each COVID-19 case in our community, this will be updated in our newsletter each week. This week we have had 6 notifications of positive cases of COVID-19 in the schooling community.
Staffing Update:
It is with great sadness that I announce that our year 5 teacher Mr Alastair Fraser will be taking a period of leave for the entirety of Term 2 for family reasons. Alastair and his partner Maddi have immersed themselves in our St Joseph’s Catholic School community and it will be sad to see them go. Please join me in praying for their family and for their return later in the year.
Year 7 to 9 Girls Uniform (formal shirt):
I am currently working with a number of companies to redesign the senior shirt for girls in years 7 to 9. The current shirts have a band around the waist which is described as both uncomfortable and hard to fit into. Once we have more information on the new design and prices we will share this with both our students and families for your feedback.
God Bless,
Samantha Kelley

Welcome to week 8! Yesterday we had our first Sacramental gathering with our 2022 candidates. Noah O’Brien, Sid Chaplain, Michael Curley, and two candidates from Mount Isa School of The Air; Archie McDonald and Carly Patterson. Our Confirmation Mass will be held on Thursday, April 21st. When Bishop Tim Harris will make the special trip out to confirm these new members. Please keep them in your prayers as we wish them all the best for their Sacramental Journey.

We truly do have a beautiful community that surrounds our school and it really is such a special occasion when we can gather and pray together. Our theme this year is “Communities of Faith, Hope and Love”. Here at St Joseph’s we strive to build a community that inspires faith, builds hope and shares love. We hope you can share in this special gathering this Friday at 8:30am in the Mary MacKillop Shed.
Following the Mass, we have a morning of activities planned to celebrate our patron Saint, St Joseph. Parents are encouraged to stay behind after mass for cake and a cuppa and join in with the activities.

The Resilience Project - Part 5: Summary
This final part of The Resilience Project’s series shares an important message about creating environments where our kids can ask for help.
65% of adolescents do not seek help for mental illness.
In this presentation, Martin shares a personal experience about a traumatic event that happened to him as a child. He explains how he overcame adversity and built resilience by asking for support, particularly from his family.
Note: This video contains a story of sexual abuse that may be triggering. Please consider this before watching. For mental health resources and support information, visit The Resilience Project’s Support Page.

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence
Join us on Friday 18th March 2022 for the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative celebrates 12 years of action, connecting schools and communities to find workable solutions to prevent bullying.
The theme for 2022 is Kindness Culture. By building Kindness Culture together, we can promote inclusion, respect and community belonging for all students in schools across Australia. In classes this week, students will focus on Be kind online, encouraging young people to block content, report it, and support each other if they see or experience cyberbullying. The series communicates to young people that it is important they know that they are not alone and help is always available.
Further information for families can be found at https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/resources/fact-sheets/fact-sheets-for-families or check out our SchoolTV Edition here https://sjctsv.catholic.schooltv.me/newsletter/cyber-bullying.
School TV Edition: Cyberbullying
With the advent of the internet, smartphones and tablets, there is now a whole new digital dimension added to traditional schoolyard bullying. There was once a time when bullying victims were given some respite outside of school hours, but sadly these days, online bullying can occur 24/7. In today’s world, teaching your child about online and cyber safety, is as important as learning to swim or cross the road!
Cyberbullying can be identified as being repeated behaviour by an aggressor with the intent to harm or embarrass. Technology enables these aggressors to share information widely and quickly, making this form of bullying extremely dangerous and harmful. However, the answer is not to shun the internet nor social media. Instead, parents are encouraged to embrace it and instil a family internet policy to protect their children without limiting the freedom to learn, explore and communicate online.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents are provided with useful guidelines and advice on how to minimise the risks. Children have the right to feel safe, regardless of whether it is in the schoolyard or online.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the Pastoral Care Leader, Toni Schneekloth, or Guidance Counsellor, Bec Greaves, for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Prep
Good morning,
I can't believe that it is Week 8 of the term already!
Due to the impact COVID and isolation is having on staff and parent helper numbers literacy groups were not done last week. I do not want the Preps to be disadvantaged by these not going ahead, so we'll take it day by day this coming week. Please let me know each morning if you are available to help and we will decide on the day if we will have enough helpers.
The class has learnt the letters and sounds for "m", "s" and "t" and will be adding "a" to this. We have also begun to decode words by identifying the sounds (sounds not letters) that make up a word, for example fish: f-i-sh, mug: m-u-g, car: c-ar. It would be helpful if you could practice these letters and sounds and how to break words into their sounds at home, especially if your child cannot come to school. A fun game is to say the sounds and the Preps put these together to make the word. For example, "What is d-o-g?" (say sounds, not letter names). In math, we are continuing to focus on numbers to 10 and then up to 20. I started assessing each Prep individually, on their number knowledge, last week and will continue this. In science this week we will be doing an investigation involving sausages and sunscreen. This will form part of the classes science and health assessment. During HASS the preps will explore celebrations and events that are important in their lives.
Please spend some time doing some letter and number learning at home. This helps to consolidate what we are doing at school.
On Friday the school will be involved in activities to celebrate St Joseph and this will be our religion focus this week.
Parent-teacher interviews will be offered in Week 9 and a timetable for this will be sent out soon. This is a time to catch up on your child's progress. They are not compulsory. I would like to do some of these after school ( 3:15pm to 3:30pm and 3:30pm to 3:45pm) prior to Week 9. Email me if you would like an interview prior to Week 9.
Reminders:
- Tuesday - PE
- Wednesday - order tuckshop
- Thursday - tuckshop day (remember to supply a Brain Snack and second lunch if tuckshop is only for first lunch) and library
- Friday - St Joseph's Feast Day activities
Yours in fun and learning,
Mrs McLauchlan and Miss Tamara

Hi everyone,
The learning highlights for Year 3 this week are:
- English: in our reading and writing lessons we are exploring a book called ‘How to Heal a Broken Wing’ by Bob Graham. We will learn the meaning of the words ‘compassion’, ‘respect’ and ‘patient’ and practice putting these words in sentences. In spelling we are looking at the sound d, dd (as in duck).
- Math: we will practice our jump strategy and look at the ways addition and subtraction are linked
- Science: we will learn about the three different sources of heat - electric, kinetic and chemical heat
- HASS: we will learn about the different celebrations in Australia and around the world
- Religion: we will explore God’s relationship with his people, the Israelites
Have a great week ahead!
Miss Suzannah Coombs
Year 4
Hi Everyone,
I look forward to meeting up with you all next week at our parent/teacher interviews. It will be a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and ensure that we can address any difficulties or worries they are having. Keep an eye out on Compass for when the bookings go live.
HaSS
Last week we began looking at the reason there was so much overcrowding in the prisons and the hulks in England and how this led to transportation to Australia. We are answering the questions- who were the convicts and what was life like for them aboard the ships of the First Fleet and when they settled in Australia? Students will be trying to put themselves in the shoes of the convict and will be writing a historical narrative in first person, pretending to be one of the convicts.
Science- Last week we finished our Science assessment and over the next 3 weeks we will be applying our knowledge of forces to a number of STEM activities. We had a number of students absent due to Covid and I will not be expecting them to complete the assessment task, but will be assessing as much as I can through discussions of the STEM.
Have a great week!
Mrs Lesley Wall
Year 5
Welcome to week 8.
With the term almost over we will begin revising and completing our learning units.
English: This week students will begin planning for our narrative assessment task. They will commence planning and editing their drafts this week before making final edits before publishing early next week.
Math: For the next two weeks we will begin revisiting familiar topics with this week's focus being on area and perimeter.
HASS: Students will look at the effects the gold rush had on Aboriginal people as well as immigrating Chinese people. Students will conduct research on the effect the gold rush had on people as well as land, flora and fauna and the economy.
Homework: This will follow the same format as last week with some ‘must do’s’ remaining the same and some being modified. It was very pleasing to see students returning homework from last week.
Thanks, everyone and have a great week!
Mr Alastair Fraser
Year 6
Welcome to Week 7!
I am back at school and ready to guide the students through a very busy 3 weeks!
Our learning focuses for this week:
Religion: Students will resume their assessment task and write a meaningful paragraph about God’s promise through the prophets of the coming of a messiah.
English: The students have finished reading Holes and are completely focused on the planning of their creative diary entries. We will begin writing our introductory paragraphs this week.
Mathematics: This week, we are learning about integers, particularly solving problems and identifying everyday examples.
HaSS: Students are continuing to work through their proposal assessment before learning about longitude and latitude as a means of determining absolute and relative location.
A reminder that Physical Education is Week A Tuesday & Week B Monday. Library is Week A Wednesday & Week B Thursday.
Keep checking in with students to see if they have homework and to sign their diaries - great practice for high school!
Have a blessed week!
Mr. James Delaney & The Year 6 Legends
Year 7 Geography
We have spent this term looking at water in our natural environment and at St. Joseph’s, we are atypical of most Year 7 classes in Queensland who study history in the first semester. We study geography in Semester 1 so that we can see the things we learn about in the real world (i.e. when our Cloncurry River flows!) No use waiting until July when things are quite dry! So we have been on our field trip to view fluvial features of rivers and use various pieces of monitoring equipment to conduct measurements in the field. Water is a renewable resource that we need to conserve and by learning about it in detail, we are future-proofing our world for sustainability with informed environmental citizens!
Mrs Toni Schneekloth
Year 7/8 Language
This semester, students will be learning/revising the Hiragana & Katakana scripts to implement them more effectively in their class work. We have recently concluded creating a family tree that not only shows their knowledge of family vocabulary, but also when to use different scripts. For our next mini-unit, students learn how to write emails and letters about their personal worlds (all about themselves) with correct features and vocabulary, depending on the audience - differentiating between kaigo and non-kaigo (formal & informal) language. From their written work, they will present the information as a spoken monologue that their classmates will attempt to comprehend.
Mr James Delaney
Year 9 Maths
This term we have been loving the letters in Mathematics, as we apply the index rules to simplify Indice operations. We are using this understanding of index form to write and convert numbers between standard form, index form, and scientific notation. Scientific notation is great for expressing very very large or very very small numbers. We have also started looking at expanding algebraic expressions - where numbers are once again at the center of our new procedures. Using letters in Maths can be quite overwhelming at first, so students are encouraged to seek additional help at any time they feel the need.
I am always available during breaks and homework club runs on Thursdays. Once students get a handle on the rules of using algebra it can really set them up to do well in the remainder of highschool Maths.
Mrs Tania Laffey
NAPLAN
Hi Parents and Carers,
Please note that an email was sent home to parents of students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9. In case you missed this though, I have included it below:
In 2022 all Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will be completing NAPLAN online from Tuesday 10th of May to Friday 13th May. NAPLAN is an important tool for students, parents and teachers as it provides an in-depth snapshot of how each student is progressing with their skills in literacy and numeracy. These provide the foundational skills for students as they progress through school and beyond.
The school NAPLAN schedule has been included in this letter outlining when students will be completing each test. If a student is absent for any reason they can complete the test/s missed in a catch up session; listed on the NAPLAN schedule. Please ensure your child/children are on time for school as the NAPLAN sessions will start at 8.40am each day.
If you have any questions, concerns or for any reason you do not wish for your child/children to complete NAPLAN in 2022 please contact me directly, my email and phone number are listed below.
Prior to NAPLAN in May it is important that students have a chance to practice on the NAPLAN portal. On Thursday the 24th of March (Week 9) your child/children will partake in a ‘practice test’. The test will not record students' names or their results. It’s sole purpose is to familiarise students with the software. This is also a great way to not only test the school’s domain and compatibility with student’s devices, but will minimise the uncertainty or stress for students in May when they sit the NAPLAN tests. The practice test will take place at 10:30am and finish at 11:30am. Students' lunch breaks will be adjusted accordingly on the day of the practice test.
Kind Regards,
Mr Dean Kelley
Sports & Extra Curricular
Last week on Wednesday, 2nd March 2022, St Joseph’s Students and Staff attended the Combined 2022 Mid West Trials. Students participated in Rugby League, Netball and Touch trials throughout the day.
The day was a great day for all of our students involved. The following students were selected for in the below sports:
- Rugby League: Mac Schneekloth & Kale McKenzie
- Touch: Mac Schneekloth, Tom Schneekloth and Toby King
- Netball: Kate Macnamara and Tom Schneekloth as a Shadow.
Students will now attend Trials for Rugby League here in Cloncurry on March 25 & 26 to be selected into the North West Team. The touch players will travel to Mt Isa in April to hopefully be selected to go further and the Netballers will travel to the Central West District later in May.
We look forward to hearing and seeing how all these students go for their future trials.
We also had Catie Hansen and Faith Douglas travel to Julia Creek to be student umpires for Netball. These two young ladies were outstanding and were praised for their professionalism, manners, and knowledge.
As a whole, our students were once again praised for their behaviour, manners, and all-round sportsmanship at these trials. Thank you to all the students for representing our school magnificently, and thank you to all the parents and carers that took time off to take their students to the trials.
Mr Scott Murray

It is that time of the year again, although cutting it nice and fine (better late than never). Today is Team List Tuesday and that means that Round 1 of the NRL kicks off this Thursday!
The inaugural SJC Tipping Competition will be running again in 2022!!I am sure we can all agree that after the beginning of the year that we have all endured it is only right and deserved to participate in some healthy competition to bring our SJC community together. Hopefully, we see the return of some famous names such as 'The Big Tipper', 'TSneek', and the cunning, committed, competitive parents that are seasoned veterans to the competition. There can be only one winner! Who will claim the ultimate bragging rights? Who can knock Miss Lovett from her perch?
See the competition link below. Absolutely no entry fee required.https://www.footytips.com.au/
