Welcome to Week 9,
Semester One Reporting
The term is flying by and our teachers are busy preparing reports on each of our students' progress in Semester One. Assessment and reporting is a vital part of education as it provides a time for both students and teachers to reflect on the work that has been completed, while critically thinking and planning for what needs to occur moving forward. Report cards will be published to the Compass Parent Portal on Friday the 25th of June 2021.
While reporting is often formal, we do encourage parents and caregivers to make regular informal contact with classroom teachers to discuss your child’s wellbeing, progress and goals. At St Joseph’s we are consistently striving to maintain and sustain regular dialogue between our teachers, students and parents to best meet the needs of our students.
St Joseph’s are recruiting - spread the word!
You may have noticed that we have been advertising for a Secondary Teacher to join our College. Due to our growing Secondary School we are needing to employ an additional Secondary Teacher for this space. We would love you to help us spread the word, please see the link to the application below:
Virtual Tour - Date Change
The marketing team from TCEO will be joining our school this coming Thursday the 17th of June to capture our facilities. Once the final product has been edited we will be sure to share this with you all. Click on the link to watch Good Shepherd Rasmussen’s virtual tour to give you a sneak peak of what we are creating.
Catholic Identity
I loved seeing members of our St Joseph’s Community at Mass on Sunday. I spent some time speaking with our Year 3 students last week about what Church looks, feels and sounds like for them. One of the students shared that Church makes them feel welcome and safe, while another said that they love the sound of music that they hear each time they attend. We talked about the Church looking, feeling and sounding different to each of us and that is okay.
On Monday we joined together as a school in the Church and sang a range of different hymns that we learnt with artist Drew Lane in the Celebrations of 200 Years of Catholic Education. The students also performed the dance moves to go along to each hymn - jump onto our facebook page to see the students having a ball. It is important that students know that there are a lot of different ways that they can engage in prayer and a very powerful and fun way is through music.
Cloncurry Show Thank you
The community spirit of Cloncurry was clear to see this weekend as our town came together to celebrate The Show. It was great to see so many of our families enjoying the festivities together in the sunshine. I would like to thank our staff, P&F, parents, friends and family members for volunteering your time on the gate. This is a great fundraiser for our school and we are very lucky to have such dedicated people helping us strive for excellence. We appreciate you.
I hope you all have a good week.
God Bless.

Becoming New in Christ
At the start of this year, Bishop Tim started a renewal process within our diocese with this year being a year of consultation. Throughout the year we have focused on three themes namely: Belong, Believe and Becoming. For each theme we have had questions set by Bishop Tim. It’s not only about the individual words but the sequence in which they are applied; the sequence Belong Believe Become is necessary for the mission of a Catholic parish today, but that is not what we tend to do. We all too easily do the opposite - Become Believe Belong – that is, we give people the message: ‘you become like us (fit in straight away) and we’ll show you what to believe, and then we might let you belong.’ This was not Jesus’ way, not what Pope Francis is calling for, and thwarts a major purpose (mission) for which the parish exists: reaching people who do not know Jesus. As a school we are planning to explore the renewal process in a deeper way. We will be having discussions in classes and around the school with staff and students.
Gospel Reading
Mark 4:26–34
The reign of God is like a mustard seed.
Church documents call the Christian family the “domestic church.” This is both a compliment and a call to commitment. Because the family is a community formed in love and dedicated to the physical and spiritual growth of its members, it is a miniature version of the Kingdom of God on earth. This Sunday’s Gospel Reading, Mark 4:26–34, consists of two parables that Jesus used to help us discern the mystery of the Kingdom of God. The beginning of the kingdom is compared to a tiny seed that over time matures and ripens. Many of the things we do within the family seem insignificant. They are part of our daily activity and attract little attention. Yet they show our love and concern for one another. According to the Gospel, it’s these small things that yield big results, acting as significant contributions to the growth of God’s kingdom on earth. The growth of the seed illustrates the nature and the results of a strong faith.
Read aloud together the Gospel of Mark 4:26–34. Consider how your family’s concerns reflect the Church’s concerns for those members who are poor, forgotten, hungry, ill, shunned, or lonely. Together think of a specific action that you can do to assist a person in your extended family, neighborhood, or parish. Now pray together the Lord’s Prayer, pausing briefly to consider the import of the words “thy kingdom come.” Each evening this week as you gather for supper, share with one another the simple acts of love you witnessed within the family that day.
Your voice on Catholic Youth Ministry
The Catholic Youth Commission Townsville Diocese, invites you to comment on a summary picture of parish youth ministry across the diocese.
Why? To give YOU the chance to comment or add further to what’s here, or to do so for the first time. What you experience is a vital part of the parish youth ministry picture. This will help the Commission to understand more and prepare a final draft.
Click here to access the Google Form - http://bit.ly/ythsurvey
When you open you will see the questions inviting further comment on the summary picture and another link which opens the Summary itself.
What next? The Commission will take up your feedback in finalising its description of current youth ministry in the Townsville Diocese across four areas: Parishes, Schools (Principals and staff), Catholic School Students (Yrs 10, 11, 12), and other settings, including the Youth Ambassadors’ Forums in 2020. This will form part of a report to the Bishop and the wider Diocese and be a platform for the Commission’s work in the months and years to follow.

TCE Cyber Safety Parent session
TikTok, Discord, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook…we are inundated with social media sites, and our children often know more about them than we do! How do you know who your child is “talking” to online? Cybersafety is something that all parents should be concerned about, but many feel overwhelmed, uninformed, or just plain confused about how to protect their children online.
Most social media sites have an age restriction of 13, yet many younger students have their own accounts and can be exposed to inappropriate language, images and discussions, and cyberbullying. On Tuesday the 15th of June we will be hosting a Cyber Safety Information session for parents at 5:30 pm in the Middle School Building. This is open to all parents to attend. The presenter is Katherine Olsen, Townsville Catholic Education’s Student Protection Coordinator. She will also be running sessions with our Middle School Students during the day.
Prep
Almost holidays! I was very impressed with the Prep artwork which was displayed at the show. It looked fantastic! Congratulations to those students who won ribbons for their entries in the school work section as well as other sections such as cooking and craft. It was very exciting to see all the entries from Prep. This week and next we will be concentrating on getting all home readers and library books returned before the holidays. Therefore no readers or library books will be sent home this week or next. Please make sure to return both this week if possible. The holidays are a great time to practice "tricky words” though so please keep your list. We will be up to the words in set 5 by the holidays.
Prep has been learning about the Zones of Regulation as part of our Health Unit. This helps students identify and choose tools for regulating their emotions. Here is a link for more information, if you are interested. Zones of Regulation. Later this week each child will take home a booklet with a person outline in each of the Zone's colours. Talk to them about what happens to your body in each Zone. For example your heart might race, you might use a loud voice. They have also put together their own Toolkit to use to keep them in the Green Zone or to try to get back into the Green Zone. For example if they are in the Red Zone they might be really angry and have chosen going for a run or squishing a stress ball as a way to try to get back into the Green Zone. The Green Zone is optimal for learning to occur. Have a chat to your child about their "toolkit" and how it could be used at home.

Year 3
Hi everyone!
I hope you had a great long weekend. Students were excited to share their stories from the Show and it sounded like they all had a lot of fun! We have two weeks left of Term 2 and, as all assessment for Semester 1 is now complete, students will have the opportunity to engage with more informal (fun...) learning activities, such as:
- We have used our imagination to create a silly story about a ‘crazy Uncle Vanya.’
- Students wrote a rhyming poem about wacky animals. Our favourite line was ‘there was a bee/with one stiff knee’
- We will play a range of maths games, particularly multiplication games to consolidate our learning of the 2x, 3x, 5x, and 10x tables.
- We will engage in ‘inquiry learning’ to ask questions and find answers about a range of natural features and human landmarks in Australia.
Reminders
Library: Wednesday
PE: Thursday
Homework due: Friday. This will be our last week of homework for the term. Please start returning any homework books or home readers you may have lying around.
Finally, I will be taking leave in Week 10. I will be contactable via email but please see the office for any urgent concerns.

Fete
This year for the Fete the Year 4 class is setting up mini-golf and a lollipop game. As prizes we will be needing some bags of lollipops (see below) and other lollies and chocolates (for better prizes). It would be great if we could have some donations of these. If you are away for the holidays you may be able to pick these up quite cheaply!

Year 7&8:
This term our year 7 and 8 students completed their pencil cases. Students gained valuable skills which they will require for future projects such as measuring, cutting (straight lines), chiseling, sanding, assembling and finally finishing with either a clear coat or a varnish. Our next project is slightly more complicated as students will create a nail caddy from raw materials.
Year 9:
Year 9 completed their work on a 3D puzzle this term. The focus for the 3D puzzle along with the end product was resilience. The workshop can be a frustrating place at times and all year 9 students found this while creating their workpiece. But to their credit no one gave up and after multiple failures students finally finished their 3D puzzle. Next term our year 9 class is getting slightly ambitious as we attempt to make outdoor furniture in small groups.
NAIDOC
Next Friday, June 25th Saint Josephs are celebrating NAIDOC.
We will be starting at the MM Shed at 8:30am for the Liturgy and assembly, followed by rotational activities and at 12:00pm a sausage sizzle and the cutting of the cake. Our NAIDOC day will conclude at 12:30pm. Classes for all students will then resume as normal.
Yours in Faith and Education,
Mrs Louise Martin
