Principal News
Welcome to Week 4,
Swimming Carnival - Friday 29th October 2021
Our swimming carnival is fast approaching and will take place this Friday 29th October 2021. The students have been working hard behind the scenes at their swimming lessons to prepare for the big day. It will be great to have parents / caregivers / family members join us inside the pool grounds this year for the Swimming Carnival. We do however ask that you are maintaining physical distancing throughout the event and sign in on the COVID QR code before entering the venue. Please note if your child arrives late or is being collected early they must be signed in and signed out.
Day for Daniel
This coming Friday the 29th of October is Day for Daniel day, which is Australia’s largest day of action to raise awareness for child safety, child protection and harm prevention. Day for Daniel is held annually on the last Friday of October to honour the memory of Daniel Morcombe.
Parents, carers, and educators are encouraged to start a conversation with children and young people about personal safety. We regularly engage in conversations with students about child safety and provide many educational activities to ensure that children feel safe and know how to communicate if they don’t.
Due to the swimming carnival on Friday, we will be bringing awareness to Day for Daniel on Thursday. Students are encouraged to wear red this coming Thursday the 28th of October to show our support for this important cause.
World Teachers Day
This Friday we will also be celebrating world teachers day. World Teachers Day is a day for us to stop and appreciate those that make such a big difference in the lives of our students each and every day. It is also a day for teachers to celebrate and be proud of their achievements as an educator.
These past few years in particular have been quite challenging for teachers as they have had to navigate through uncertain times. Education continued across the world in the uncertain times of COVID-19 and it is the dedication and hardwork of our teachers that made this possible. Although we have been very blessed this year with little interruptions I would like to thank our colleagues in other States of Australia that haven’t been as lucky.
It is also important that we also take the time to celebrate St Mary MacKillop whose teachings pathed the way for the schooling that we get to learn and develop in today.
Year 5 Camp
Our Year 5 students are very excited to be embarking on Camp next week. The students will be off for a week full of adventures at Gumburu Environmental Centre. The Gumburu Environmental Education Centre is located in the World Heritage Listed Paluma rainforest. The students will be accompanied by Miss Campbell, Miss Heather, Fr. Emene and Mr Kelley. I would like to thank Miss Campbell for the many hours that have gone into organising the year 5 camp for our students.
Join us at church!
It has been great to see so many students and family members joining us at Church each Sunday morning. We are lucky to have weekly services that begin at 830am each week led by Fr Mick or Fr Emene. This Sunday we have a Combined Church Service followed by morning tea. Come and join us - we would love to see you there!
Upcoming Celebrations at the St Colman’s Parish
Fr Mick will be holding an All Saints' Day Mass next Monday at 5pm in The St Colman's Parish. We then have our board information evening at 500pm which you are all welcome to attend.
There will then be a mass on Tuesday morning at 730am for All Souls' Day. The Mass will go for approximately 30 minutes in length. We have moved the All Souls' Day Mass earlier in the morning in case you wanted to join.
Board Information Evening
A reminder that there will be a board information evening next Monday at 500pm. There is more information on this in the Week 3 Newsletter. If you are interested in this presentation or in joining our board in 2022 please come along for the presentation. Stephanie Giorcelli our Education Consultant from the Townsville Catholic Education Office will be joining us.
God Bless,
Samantha Kelley

APRE News
Welcome to Week 4. I can’t believe how much time is flying this term. As many would know by now, I have accepted a position at St Catherine Catholic College, Whitsundays for next year. I consider myself to be extremely blessed to have worked at St Joseph’s for the last three and a half years. I would like to thank all staff, students, parents and community members for the wonderful experiences I’ve gained since June of 2018.
This is the fourth week of our Chaplaincy Breakfast which is a great opportunity to have a chat over a shared breakfast. Last week we had pancakes for breakfast and today we had bacon and eggs. Next week we will be serving pancakes again. We have our Chaplaincy Breakfast every Tuesday and Thursday from 07:30 - 08:00 AM. I would like to thank Mr Murray, Mrs. Schneekloth and Mrs. Martin for being our constant helpers for breakfast.
During first lunch on Monday I joined the Crochet Club where the secondary students taught me how to crochet, it was a new experience for me and at some times somewhat frustrating as I thought I could not do it, however the students kept encouraging me to keep at it and continue to practice, it was at this point that I realised how blessed we are as a school to have students who display the values of Mary MacKillop and St Joseph the Worker. As teachers we always encourage our students to give things “a go” even if they are not good at it or if they feel disheartened, it was very refreshing to encounter the same encouragement from the students who were teaching me crocheting skills.
World Teacher Day
Friday the 29th of October is World Teacher Day. A day set apart where we celebrate all our dedicated, inspiring, incredible teachers within our school. Our staff will be gathering together for a staff luncheon on Thursday as we have our swimming carnival on Friday.
Please join in this prayer for our teachers:
Gospel Reading Mark 12:28b-34
Jesus is questioned by a scribe about the greatest commandment.
As Christians, our moral behavior is guided by the two-part commandment taught by Jesus in today’s Gospel: love God and love your neighbor as yourself. Many of us learned to use this framework as an examination of conscience. By examining our lives through the lens of these commandments, we have learned that the challenge of these commandments is not in our desire to follow them but in our capacity to consistently honor these commandments in our daily lives.
For one week, identify and collect news reports of how Christians show their love for God by loving and serving their neighbor. Clip these news items and share what you have heard when you gather as a family. Read together today’s Gospel, Mark 12:28b-34. Talk about ways in which your family might contribute to the examples of Christian service you found. Choose one of these actions to do together as a family. Conclude in prayer together asking God to help us show love to our family members and friends. Pray together the Act of Love.
O my God, I love you above all things with my whole heart and soul, because you are all good and worthy of all my love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of you. I forgive all who have injured me and I ask pardon of those whom I have injured.
Amen.
May God bless you and your family this week

Pastoral Care
Student Representative Council
Our SRC has been meeting fortnightly to discuss matters to improve school life and facilities. There are lots of fantastic ideas being suggested by our students such as fundraising ideas to provide funds for additional sport equipment and promoting Catholic social teachings through mission in action. From today, students will see a basket in their classroom in which they can donate any non-perishable items for members in our community for this Christmas.
Uniform
Although the year is winding down, we always have very high expectations of all students regarding uniform, punctuality, and work ethic. Students are reminded to wear the correct uniform at all times and comply with the dress standards at the school.
Please ensure all students have black shoes to wear with their formal uniform and with the warmer weather now upon us, hats are essential for sun protection.
Have a great week and see you all at the Swimming Carnival!
Mrs Toni Schneekloth
Pastoral Care Leader
Prep
Wow the term is flying!
The excitement this week is the Swimming Carnival on Friday! All the Preps will have whatever level of support they need to swim 25m in each of the events. These events involve using noodles and kickboards and adult helpers will be in each lane. Unfortunately I will be absent for the swimming carnival due to a medical appointment. Miss Maggie is also away all of this week. A reminder - Friday Week 7 (Friday the 19th November) Pep will be performing Going on a Bear Hunt at assembly. This is also Move Up day so the current Preps will have the morning session in Year 1 and the 2022 Preps will be at parade and then in Prep.
In Prep this week we will continue our Initial Lit program, in science explore movement, start practicing our Bear Hunt performance, complete a religion assessment and continue revising and extending concepts in Math. We will also login to the Chromebooks and practice sending an email again. It would be great if your child could have access to a keyboard to practice typing their first name initial and last name (bsmith) as this will help them when they login to Chromebooks and also to their profile on the Literacy App we use on the Ipads.
The Preps have begun typing sentences during Literacy rotations so keyboard knowledge will also help with this.
- Tuesday: Swimming
- Wednesday: Library and tuckshop orders
- Thursday: Tuckshop
- Friday: Swimming carnival (no readers exchanged this week). Please keep your books. Reread these and practice Tricky words!
Wishing you a great Week 4!
Yours in fun and learning,

We have ordered some new ribbons for this event. It provides a space for the date of the carnival and the event to be recorded on them. We would love to hear your feedback on these!
The program for the carnival was sent home with your child. The following information was also on the letter but we have popped it here for you incase you have misplaced it:

All students need to be dropped off at the pool by no later than 8:20am. However, as per the program above, students aged 5 – 8 years will finish the day at 11:30am. The students can either walk back to school for the remainder of the day with a teacher or be collected and taken home by their parents. Please ensure that you sign your child/children out if you are taking your child home. Students aged 9 – 16 years will be required to be at the carnival for the entirety of the day.
Sun Safety
Throughout the day, students will be required to wear fully sun safe attire (eg. swim shirt, T- shirt, hats, sunscreen etc). However, when the students are participating in their events they are permitted to remove sun shirts and hats etc.

Chaplaincy Breakfast - Term 4
In Term 4 St Joseph's Catholic School will be introducing a Chaplaincy Breakfast program each Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30am - 8:00am.
All staff, students, parents, carers and family members are welcome to join us!
Our aim is to ensure students are provided with the best opportunity to make the most of their education and develop healthy eating habits. We also aim to bring our community together through this breakfast program. Research suggests that eating breakfast in the morning sets our students up for a day of learning by maximising their behavioural outcomes in the classroom, while assisting them in engaging with learning tasks in the classroom.
We would love if you help us spread the word!
Spare Pallets and Wheels !
Mr Brown, a new teacher to our UMY space has joined us for Term 4 and would like to make Billy Carts with the students. He needs pallets that can be taken apart and wheels. Old pram wheels would be suitable.
Drop off outside the Workshop or phone the office for directions.
Casual Employment Opportunties
We are seeking casual School Officers and qualified Teachers to cover sick and leave days.
