Principal News
Welcome to Week 10,
It is amazing how quickly the school term has flown by. We have had a very busy term packed full of great activities for us to enjoy with one another. We began the term by joining The Cloncurry State School for a NAIDOC march and BBQ, and then continued on with a number of celebrations throughout the term including The Athletics Carnival, Mulkadee, Queensland Catholic Education Week, North West Athletics, Grand Parents Day, Prep Open Evening, Dance North Workshop, Mary MacKillop Feast Day, Didjeribone School Performance, Fun Run, Science Week, Book Week, Football Queensland, TCEO Netball Comp, Learning Breakfast, Fathers Day, Child Protection Week, QSLS Beach to Bush, Bush Dance, R U OK? Day, and we will end our term with a celebration for the Royal Flying Doctors Service.
On Friday we will be celebrating the work of the Royal Flying Doctors Service in Cloncurry. The Royal Flying Doctors Service have helped a number of our families this year access medical treatment in a time of need. At St Joseph's Catholic School we celebrate the work of St Mary MacKillop who said “Never see a need without doing something about it” and this is exactly what The RFDS do for those in need in our community. On Friday we would like to acknowledge this and celebrate the work of the RFDS by giving back. We ask that all staff, students and community members wear blue and bring a gold coin donation on Friday. We have contacted the RFDS to inform them of our fundraiser and they have stated that all proceeds raised on the day will go towards the replacement of ageing aircraft and to update vital medical equipment so that the RFDS can continue to provide medical assistance to all Queenslanders wherever they are in the state. WE are very excited to be supporting such a useful and important service to Cloncurry.
We would like to welcome Miss Meg to our team. Meg has been popping into our classrooms over the past week to assist students with their learning, today Meg will begin her new role as front office administration. Please pop in and meet Meg and join us in welcoming her to our St Joseph’s Catholic School community.
Please note that Term 4 commences on Tuesday 5 October – (Monday 4 October being a public holiday).
I hope you have a safe and joyful holiday period.
God Bless,
Samantha Kelley

Welcome to Week 10
Term 3 has been a vigorous term for our school, in our Teaching and Learning space as well as our Catholic Identity sphere. This term we’ve been visited by Gideons International who gave a talk to our Years 7 - 9 students as well as gifted bibles to students who accepted the invitation to owning one. In Week Two of this term Miss Lovett and some of our students across primary and secondary traveled to Townsville for the 2021 Mulkadee Youth Arts Festival and performance which was a phenomenal experience. Our Years 7 - 9 students along with our Years 5 and 6 SRC members traveled to Mount Isa in Week 3 for this year’s Queensland Catholic Education Week Mass with our three Catholic Schools in Mount Isa which was at the Good Shepherd Church. Some of our staff also attended the Boots and Ball Gowns Dinner in Mount Isa where we celebrated 200 Years of Catholic Education in Australia. St Mary of the Cross MacKillop’s Feast Day was celebrated in Week Four. In Week 6 we had our Term Three Catholic Identity Advisory Committee meeting where we further unpacked and discussed our school’s ECSI (Enhancing Catholic School Identity) report. Mrs Kelley and I along with Ms Lee-Ann Barton, our school Townsville Catholic Education Religious Education Advisor, have since been working on creating an action plan for the next five years of our school catholic identity. This term we also commenced with fortnightly student liturgies in our St Colman’s church. As a teaching staff we’ve also met to study a section of Sacred Text.
No place for division between believers: Pope
Published: 09 September 2021
There is no place for discrimination or divisive distinctions among people who believe in Christ, Pope Francis said yesterday during his weekly general audience.
That everyone is made new and equal in Christ overcomes all ethnic, economic and social differences, even between the two sexes, “establishing an equality between man and woman which was revolutionary at the time and which needs to be reaffirmed even today,” he told those gathered in the Paul VI audience hall at the Vatican.
“How many times we hear expressions that denigrate women,” he said, adding that even today women experience a kind of slavery in which “women do not have the same opportunities as men”.
The Pope continued his series of talks on St Paul’s Letter to the Galatians by looking at what faith in Christ brings.
With faith and baptism, people become new creatures, “clothed” with Christ and children of God in Christ, the apostle writes. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is no male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
The Pope said this shows how “baptism, therefore, is not merely an external rite. Those who receive it are transformed deep within, in their inmost being, and possess new life” with an identity that is so new “that it prevails over the differences that exist on the ethnic-religious level” and social and economic levels.
Differences and conflicts caused by separation “should not exist among believers in Christ,” he said, cautioning against creating differences between people, “many times unconsciously.”
“Everything that exacerbates the differences between people, often causing discrimination – all of this, before God, no longer has any meaning, thanks to the salvation effected in Christ.”
Gospel Reading
Mark 9:30-37
Jesus teaches his disciples that the greatest are those who serve all.
Conversations such as the one described in today’s Gospel are common in family life. Perhaps these examples are familiar: “I should get the first piece of cake because I am the youngest;” “I did the dishes yesterday; someone else should do them today.” How might we respond if Jesus asked about our family arguments? What would Jesus say to us in reply? All of us need the reminder found in today’s Gospel: To be great in God’s Kingdom is to be the servant of all.
As you gather as a family, recall a recent family argument about household chores or an example of bickering among family members. Talk about what was at issue in the argument. Together imagine that Jesus entered the room just as the argument ended. What would you tell Jesus your argument was about? What might Jesus say in reply? Read together today's Gospel, Mark 9:30-37. How was your family argument like the argument among Jesus’ disciples? What might your family do to remember that those who are great in God’s kingdom are those who willingly serve others? Pray together that your family life will reflect your commitment to serve one another with love. Pray Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s Prayer for Generosity.
Eternal Word, only begotten Son of God,
Teach me true generosity.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve.
To give without counting the cost,
To fight heedless of wounds,
To labor without seeking rest,
To sacrifice myself without thought of any reward
Save the knowledge that I have done your will.
Amen.
Holiday Prayer
We thank you Lord, for this term. For our challenges, our successes, and the mistakes from which we have learnt. Be with us as we spend our time with family and friends. Give us strength and courage to do what is right: to be witnesses of our faith. Help us to be a practical Christian these holidays, to appreciate what others do for us, to give time and effort to help others. To be peacemakers in our family. Keep us safe in our activities; give us good rest and good fun. Bring us back refreshed and ready for a new term. We thank you for our classmates, teachers, parents and a community that cares for us.
May we always be conscious of you in our lives.
Amen

Prep
Week 10 News.
This week in Prep we have a few assessment tasks to catch up on for students who have been away and some to finish. Our literacy focus this week will be rhyming words and sentence writing and in math we will continue to explore addition and number stories.
We will not have literacy rotations this week. Thank you to all our helpers from last Term.
No home readers will go home as we will be concentrating on getting them all back before the holidays and scanning them in. If you have brought your readers back and want to take your folder with "tricky words" home to practice over the holidays please take it out of the Home Reader Box.
Please remember to check whether your child has their own hat. If they are using a spare (sprayed pink) hat they are not allowed to play at lunchtimes. Friday students are encouraged to wear blue and bring a gold coin donation. This is to support the RFDS.
All week: Bring home readers back
Tuesday: Sport
Wednesday: Library
Wishing you all a safe and happy break from the school routine!

Week 10 is here!! What a crazy term we have had….from the Athletics Carnival to the bush dance, Grandparents Day, the Learning Breakfast and everything in between….we finally made it to the end of Term 3. This week we will try to get a headstart on some content for Term 4 whilst revising the work we have done up until now. ENGLISH: Informative Texts are our focus for next term. This will be combined with our SCIENCE unit that involves investigating living things that have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment. And of course...the most exciting part of Term 4 is camp!! I think it is fair to say the students are very, very excited. Please double check the list of things to bring to make sure any missing items can be purchased in the holidays. A gentle reminder that any camp menu changes will need to be sent back to me by tomorrow! (Wednesday). Have a great week! Miss Campbell |

Subject Spotlight - The Arts
Media Arts - 7 & 8: Stop Motion Advertising
This term, year 7&8 students began their semester of Media Arts, with all tasks centred around the use of stop motion animation. The students had the freedom to explore the use of various objects for animation; clay, lego, toys, stationary items, silhouette and others. They recreated a part of a dream time story, using clay as their primary object and the stop motion program. For their assessment item, the students chose a product or company to create an advertisement for using stop motion. It was wonderful to see their creativity shine in this project - there were some excellent advertisements in the end! Students constructed a short written response to their advertisement and it was very interesting to read about the decisions they made for the meaning of the ad, creative choices in regards to objects and sounds included, what they found success in and what (if any) challenges they faced with the process.
Chaplaincy Breakfast - Term 4
In Term 4 St Joseph's Catholic School will be introducing a Chaplaincy Breakfast program each Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30am - 8:00am.
All staff, students, parents, carers and family members are welcome to join us!
Our aim is to ensure students are provided with the best opportunity to make the most of their education and develop healthy eating habits. We also aim to bring our community together through this breakfast program. Research suggests that eating breakfast in the morning sets our students up for a day of learning by maximising their behavioural outcomes in the classroom, while assisting them in engaging with learning tasks in the classroom.
We would love if you help us spread the word!
Indigenous Education News
Dear Parents/Carers,
This Friday the 17th of September St Joseph’s will be presented with their 2021 Reconciliation Action Plan on Assembly. This is a time to celebrate our commitment to our classrooms, school and community as we build on opportunities, respect and relationships with our Indigenous families. It would be great to see you there!
Yours in Faith and Education,
Mrs Louise Martin
Inclusive Education News
Dear Parents/Carers,
At St Joseph’s, we have been fortunate to schedule a health worker from Mt Isa Child Health to come to our school and perform sight screeners on the 13th of October. Sight screening happens annually in our Prep class but unfortunately not for the rest of the school. Sight checks are an important step to ensure your child’s vision is not affecting their learning.
If you are concerned about your child’s sight and would like to get them screened please collect a sight screener permission form from the office or alternatively email me and I can send one home with your child.
Please note this is a screening tool only and children with a deficit will be required to see an optometrist for follow up.
Kind regards,
Louise Martin
