Principal News
Welcome to Week 7,
Book Week 2022
This morning we came together for our annual book week parade. I was so impressed by the outfits this year - it was clear to see the amount of planning that has gone into each of the costumes. The students were so excited to show them off and share stories about their character. Dressing up is not only a fun and engaging activity for our students to do, but it also educates our students on a range of different books and characters as they engage with other students on the day and share stories about their favourite books.
Thank you for joining us this morning. We will be awarding our winners with their certificate and book at assembly on Friday so please come along and join us.
We were also very lucky to have Sister Lynne, Adopt-a-Cop Constable Lauchy and Diane Evans who is visiting from Brisbane join us this morning to judge our best dressed costume for each year level. Diane has also been volunteering in the library to help Mrs Chaplain create the ‘Far Away Tree’.
St Colman's Parish & St Joseph’s Catholic School Fete
We are so excited to be joining you all on Friday evening for our annual Fete. This is my first fete experience in Cloncurry and I can’t wait to see the community come together for a night of fun and laughter.
Events like this don’t happen without the commitment and dedication of individuals within our community. I would like to thank Tamara Williams and Shelley Curry on behalf of the St Joseph’s Community for their work coordinating the fete.
A friendly reminder that all attendees should not enter the event if in the previous 14 days they have:
- returned to Australia from overseas (other than a safe travel zone country)
- been in close contact with an active COVID-19 case
- been in a Queensland declared COVID-19 hotspot, place of concern or exposure venue, as defined by the Chief Health Officer
- had a fever, cough, sore throat, headache, distorted sense of taste, shortness of breath, chills, vomiting or any cold/flu like symptoms in the last 72 hours.
Cloncurry Special Holiday - Friday 8th October 2021
St Joseph’s Catholic School will be finishing at 12pm on Friday the 8th of October (Term 4 - Week 1) as The Cloncurry Council have announced Ministerial approval for a half day special holiday to align with the Cloncurry and District Race Club’s Meet to grow the event within the town.
We have received communication from The Council Administration Team that the following businesses will be closing from 12pm: The Council Administration Office, Council Depots (Dajarra and Cloncurry), Curry Kids Early Learning Centre, Bob McDonald Library, John Flynn Place and St Joseph's Catholic School will be closed from 12pm on this day. Cloncurry Unearthed Visitor Information Centre will be open on this date during the hours of 8:30am – 4:30pm.

APRE News
This year, to assist in enhancing our Catholic Identity, we started having regular school wide liturgies in our church. This term our school liturgies are every fortnight. Yesterday we gathered to sing hymns together. Singing assists in our expression and response to God, songs in church also helps unite us as a school community.
Our Parish
Over the last couple of week’s I wrote about how our school is part of the St Colman’s Parish, giving information about who St Colman is, as well as information about our Parish Council.
On Friday we will be having our joint school and parish fete. If you would like to volunteer to work in our parish stall please send through your name to our Parish Council President, Chris Chaplain (cchaplain@sjctsv.catholic.edu.au) or Parish Council Secretary Gillian Gardiner (ggard23@eq.edu.au )
Gospel Reading Mark 7:1-8,14-15,21-23
Jesus teaches that it is that which comes from our hearts that defiles us.
Children have learned the importance of following rules. Like the Pharisees in today’s Gospel, they often bring to our attention the infractions of others. Even parents sometimes get caught off guard by their children’s observations: “Why don’t you have to go to bed at 8:00?” or “But I saw you eat a cupcake before breakfast once.” Our rules for our children are not arbitrary. We establish and enforce family rules with the intention of helping our children grow to be healthy and mature adults. We foster this maturity when we also initiate conversations with our children about the purposes behind family rules and teach them the essential values that rules help us observe.
As you gather as a family, list some of your most important family rules. Together, try to write a single, positive statement that captures the essential value behind your family rules. In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus criticize the Pharisees for making their rules about ritual purity equal to the commandments of God’s Law. Read today’s Gospel, Mark 7:1-8,14-15,21-23. When we remember the essential element behind our rules, we see that our rules help us be the good people that Jesus wants us to be. Conclude in prayer together that we may always honor God’s Law in our words and deeds.
Mass to honour Australia’s saint-in-waiting
A special Mass was held on the Feast of the Assumption to honour Sydney saint-in-waiting Eileen O’Connor, who had a profound devotion to Our Lady.
The Mass was held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Waterloo – the church where O’Connor was likely first inspired to say “Yes” to God and commit her life to serving the disadvantaged.
The Mass, celebrated Fr Paul Smithers, was part of broader commemorations throughout 2021 to mark the centenary of O’Connor’s death.
As co-founder of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor in 1913, alongside missionary priest Fr Edward McGrath, Eileen O’Connor helped establish a religious order, based at Coogee, committed to nursing the sick poor in their own homes at a time when there was no free government healthcare scheme.
In his homily, Fr Smithers spoke of O’Connor’s profound devotion to Mary, who like O’Connor, was inspired to care for the vulnerable. “It’s said that Our Lady appeared to Eileen in her room at Coogee and I have no doubt that Our Lady did do so in order to inspire such greatness in someone so vulnerable,” Fr Smithers explained.

Student Representative Council
Today marks our first Student Representative Council (SRC) meeting! Student representative councils (SRCs) work to represent students’ interests and needs in various ways. They take action to bring about positive changes that will benefit the students and the whole school community. In today’s meeting, the elected representatives will be finalising the constitution and establishing roles with the SRC.
Have a fantastic week - it is certainly a busy one!

I can't believe it is week 7 already!
This week we will be completing some Math assessment as well as exploring addition using the story book "One is snail, ten is crab" as a basis. This book uses different numbers of legs to make numbers. For example twenty could be two crabs (crabs have ten legs). We will do a sunscreen experiment as part of our science assessment task this week. In religion we will continue to explore prayer. We will be finishing our next section of Initital Lit Literacy lessons soon and will begin to assess the students ability to blend letter sounds so they can read and write words and also the students ability to recall the tricky words taught. Please continue to practice our tricky words (we are up to set 9) and read the home readers.
Thank you to those of you who have donated playdoh and/or utensils for our fete stall.

These jars can be sent into school empty or filled with small ‘knick-knacks’ such as hair-ties, lego pieces, bubbles, chocolates, lollies or any other fun item! Thank you!
